[Porphyria variegata].

Report of two patients with porphyria variegata. Several members of the first patient's family had abnormalities of porphyrine metabolism without having manifestations of porphyria. A biochemical screening of family members of PV patients is important because of its prophylactic value. In the second patient's family at least three persons have porphyria-like signs, but not all of them could be seen by us. Diagnosis, pathogenesis and therapy of porphyria variegata are discussed.

[In vitro investigations of microphages function in patients with chronic mucocutaneous candidosis (author's transl)].

In five patients with either familial or non-familial type of chronic mucocutaneous candidosis some properties of phagocytic function of the polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMNL) have been studied in vitro. In each of the patients there were found: a) a decreased chemotactic activity of PMNL, b) a weakness of intake and of intracellular destruction of Candida albicans cells by PMNL, c) an impairment of phagocytosis and intracellular killing of Candida albicans as well of Staphylococcus aureus by PMNL. The rate of phagocytosis of heat-inactivated Candida albicans cells by PMNL was normal in each case. In the serum of two patients a phagocytosis inhibiting factor is supposed to exist. In PMNL of 3 patients a defective activity of NADH-dependent oxidase was found. The occurrence of hereditary CMCC in a father and his two daughters points to an autosomal dominant trait, whereas in most cases of familiar CMCC hitherto described an autosomal recessive mode of transmission was found.

[Present state of antimycotic therapy (author's transl)].

In the local treatment of various forms of dermatophytosis tolnaftate used to be the most convincing drug. More recent developments have led to a group of imidazol derivatives which have a broader spectrum and are also effective against yeasts. Polyene antibiotics are still very useful in the treatment of Candida mycoses. There are only few drugs available for systemic treatment of mycoses. Grisefulvin is only effective against dermatophytes. Amphotericin B, given intravenously, is a very useful drug against a series of systemic mycoses but it's value is decreased by serious side effects. Fluorocytosin shows less unwanted effects than Amphotericin B, but many fungi are resistent against this antimycotic or may become so during treatment. Of the imidazol group only miconazole is available for systemic intravenous therapy. Further developments of systemic antimycotics are of great importance.

[Dermatophytoses which may be easily misinterpreted].

Almost absent inflammtory reaction or unusually deep inflammation can lead to atypical varieties of dermatophytoses. Some of the more common varieties of this kind are briefly portrayed. The importance of mycological examination, both microscopic and cultural, is pointed out.

[Morphological variants of folliculitis barbae candidomycetica].

Report on two cases of folliculitis barbae candidomycetica (f.b.c) which mimicked impetigo contagiosa in one case and tinea barbae in the other. Both patients suffered from typical predisposing factors such as leukemia, cytostatic and corticosteroid therapy, and diabetes mellitue. Taking into consideration the morphology of cases described earlier in this journal, three types of f.b.c. can be recognized: folliculitis simplex-like type, tinea barbae-like type and impetigo-like type.

[Levamisole in the treatment of therapy-resistant folliculitides].

Report on two cases with chronic folliculitis of the face, resistant to antibiotic therapy. In both cases Staphylococcus epidermidis was the only organism that could be isolated. After a comparatively short treatment with levamisole (150 mg on two successive days weekly) the lesions cleared completely.
