Preparation and study of non-thrombotic and biostable sulfobetaine-modified small-diameter polyurethane vascular grafts.

A novel sulfobetaine-modified polysiloxane-polycarbonate polyurethane (ZSiPCU) was synthesized. In vitro characterizations revealed that polysiloxane surface enrichment endowed the material with excellent biostability. Importantly, sulfobetaine zwitterions formed a robust hydration layer, effectively suppressing protein adsorption and platelet adhesion to ensure outstanding hemocompatibility. Furthermore, the material supported the adhesion and proliferation of vascular endothelial cells, confirming its cytocompatibility, while its elastomeric matrix provided rapid mechanical self-sealing capabilities. Electrospun ZSiPCU grafts were evaluated in a 3-month rat abdominal aorta model, maintaining high patency rates and facilitating in situ luminal endothelialization and smooth muscle cell remodeling. Additionally, superior puncture resistance of the grafts was demonstrated by puncture tests, with complete hemostasis achieved within 2 mins through mechanical self-sealing.

Bedtime tetrahydrocannabinol ingestion reduces morning orthostatic cardiovascular reactivity in adults: An exploratory study.

Acute cannabis use and its primary psychoactive constituent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can induce postural dizziness, indicating increased risk of orthostatic instability. However, it is unknown if vulnerabilities persist the morning after bedtime THC consumption. This study investigated the influence of bedtime THC consumption on cardiovascular variables during an orthostatic challenge. Nine individuals with no cannabis use and eight individuals who regularly use cannabis participated in a tilt table test associated with a 3-day in-laboratory stay. Participants underwent an acclimatization day, followed by a placebo dosing day, and a 10 mg THC dosing day. Placebo and THC pills were given 1 h before a participant's habitual bedtime, and the tilt table test was performed ~1 h upon awakening. Participants were instrumented with an electrocardiogram and an automated sphygmomanometer. Fluid intake and output were measured throughout the study. The morning after THC administration, individuals with no cannabis use reported a higher frequency of dizziness and exhibited a significant reduction in both diastolic blood pressure and heart rate reactivity to tilt (reactivity = tilt - baseline) compared to the morning after placebo. Our results indicate a potential increased risk for orthostatic instability the morning after cannabis consumption in individuals with no cannabis use history.

Computational metabolomics at scale: from open data to insight.

Metabolomics data are currently generated at scale thanks to the evolution of technologies that have led to marked improvements in the number of metabolites detected, spanning all chemical classes. These data are increasingly submitted to public repositories for data reuse, integration, and interpretation. Despite the availability of public resources and associated computational tools, the field still lacks a widely adopted, consistent data and analytics infrastructure capable of transforming this wealth of information into scientific insight. Indeed, the metabolomics field is just now scratching the surface of being able to harness the power of new computational technologies. In this review, we summarize discussions from the "Dagstuhl-Seminar 24181 Computational Metabolomics: Towards Molecules, Models, and their Meaning" with a focus on public data availability, open data standards, data and knowledge integration, and education. Our goal is to raise awareness and adoption of the latest open science resources while highlighting key areas needing further development.

Optimizing physical activity bouts to interrupt sedentary behaviour for cardiometabolic health: a systematic review and meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials.

AIMS: Chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases are leading causes of mortality worldwide, with sedentary behaviour (SB) and physical inactivity recognized as major interrelated risk factors. Prolonged SB, particularly when combined with insufficient physical activity, adversely affects cardiometabolic health. This systematic review aimed to evaluate which characteristics of physical activity (PA) bouts, in terms of frequency, duration, and intensity, are associated with improvements in cardiometabolic outcomes. METHODS AND RESULTS: Studies assessing physical activity interventions compared with sedentary control conditions were included. Eligible studies involved adults aged 18-65 years, with or without cardiometabolic conditions. PubMed, Cochrane Central, Embase, and Web of Science were searched to February 2025. Random-effects models were used to calculate pooled standardized mean differences (SMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Subgroup and meta-regression analyses explored potential moderators. A total of 144 studies (247 intervention arms; 2216 participants) were included. Frequent PA bouts reduced blood glucose [SMD -0.22 (95% CI -0.27 to -0.16)]. Longer and/or more intense PA bouts decreased triglycerides [SMD -0.27 (-0.34 to -0.19)], with significant duration &#xd7; intensity interactions for glucose (P = 0.032) and triglycerides (P < 0.001). Moderate-to-vigorous PA bouts improved endothelial function [flow-mediated dilation SMD 0.88 (0.47-2.24); shear rate SMD 0.54 (0.31-0.78)]. PA bouts also lowered insulin [SMD -0.26 (-0.32 to -0.19)], systolic BP [SMD -0.29 (-0.39 to -0.19)], and diastolic BP [SMD -0.16 (-0.26 to -0.05)]. CONCLUSION: In acute experimental settings, glucose regulation appears to benefit more from frequent PA bouts, while triglyceride responses are more closely related to greater duration and/or intensity. Blood pressure shows favourable acute responses across PA types, whereas higher PA intensity is associated with improved endothelial function. Tailoring strategies to interrupt SB with PA bouts may help inform approaches to improve cardiometabolic health.

Feasibility and Efficacy of Lorlatinib in Japanese Patients With Relapsed/Refractory ALK-Aberrant Neuroblastoma.

Lorlatinib, a third-generation ALK inhibitor, was administered off-label to five heavily pretreated patients with relapsed or refractory ALK-aberrant neuroblastoma. ALK alterations included F1174L, R1275Q, BEND5::ALK fusion, and ALK amplification; three patients had MYCN amplification. Best responses were three partial responses and two disease progressions. The longest progression-free survival (6.7 months) occurred in a patient with F1174L and non-amplified MYCN, whereas rapid progression was observed in two MYCN-amplified cases. Lorlatinib was generally well tolerated with manageable adverse events. These findings suggest that lorlatinib is a feasible therapeutic option in ALK-aberrant neuroblastoma and that clinical heterogeneity in treatment response warrants further investigation.

Short-term effects of foot reflexology on pain, anxiety, and physiological responses in women with shoulder and neck pain: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Shoulder and neck pain (SNP) is a common musculoskeletal complaint among women and is often accompanied by heightened anxiety. Foot reflexology (FR) is a complementary therapy proposed to promote relaxation and short-term psychophysiological regulation. This study examined the short-term effects of a single session of FR on pain, anxiety, and physiological responses in women with SNP. METHODS: A single-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted with 80 women aged 20-64&#xa0;years in southern Taiwan. Participants were randomly allocated to one of three groups: FR, exercise, or passive rest control. Each group received a single 50-min session. Pain intensity and anxiety were assessed using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), respectively. Heart rate and blood pressure were recorded as physiological indicators. Outcomes were measured at baseline, immediately post-intervention, and at 24-h follow-up. RESULTS: Baseline pain, anxiety, and physiological measures did not significantly differ among groups. Immediately after the intervention, both the FR and exercise groups demonstrated greater reductions in pain intensity compared with the passive rest control (P&#xa0;<&#xa0;0.001 and P&#xa0;=&#xa0;0.018, respectively). The FR group additionally showed greater reductions in anxiety and heart rate compared with the passive rest group (P&#xa0;=&#xa0;0.005 and P&#xa0;=&#xa0;0.001, respectively). Pain reduction in the FR group remained significant at the 24-h follow-up (P&#xa0;=&#xa0;0.013), whereas anxiety reductions were not sustained. No significant between-group differences were observed for systolic blood pressure. CONCLUSION: A single session of FR was associated with immediate and short-term reductions in pain, anxiety, and heart rate among women with SNP. Foot reflexology may serve as a supportive, non-pharmacological approach for short-term modulation, although sustained effects require further investigation.

Comprehensive study on pesticide residues and mycotoxins in freeze-dried strawberries and raspberries.

Freeze-dried fruit has gained popularity because it preserves the flavour and nutritional value of fresh fruit while providing extended shelf life. Despite this, there are concerns regarding its chemical safety. This study evaluated 58 freeze-dried fruit products from the Czech retail market, focusing on potential contamination. Pesticide residues and mycotoxins were determined using LC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS. Overall, 111 pesticide residues (or their metabolites) and 3 mycotoxins were quantified. After applying processing factors, 12 pesticide residues exceeded EU maximum residue limits. Prohibited substances, including carbofuran, omethoate, and haloxyfop, were detected. Tenuazonic acid was found in 71% of samples, while alternariol and tentoxin were detected less frequently. More than half (54%) of strawberry samples contained 10 or more pesticide residues, indicating potential cumulative exposure concerns, particularly for children with lower body weight. These findings highlight the need for continued monitoring of freeze-dried fruits and further assessment of dietary exposure.

Changes in hemoglobin levels and cardiometabolic health in adults with metabolic syndrome - a secondary outcome analysis of a six-month randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Lower hemoglobin (Hb) levels within the normal range have been associated with favorable metabolic traits in cross-sectional studies. This study investigated whether changes in Hb levels correlated with changes in physiological and cardiometabolic parameters during a six-month behavioral intervention in individuals with metabolic syndrome. METHODS: The&#xa0;six-month randomized controlled trial aimed to reduce sedentary behavior in adults with metabolic syndrome (n&#x2009;=&#x2009;64). Key measurements included fasting blood samples, insulin sensitivity during a hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp, insulin-stimulated liver glucose uptake, liver fat content (LFC), indirect calorimetry, cardiorespiratory fitness, and cardiac function. Correlations&#xa0;between changes in these variables and changes in Hb levels at baseline, three, and six months were examined. RESULTS: Cross-sectionally, higher Hb levels correlated with&#xa0;lower insulin sensitivity (r=-0.35, p&#x2009;=&#x2009;0.005), higher resting O2 consumption (r&#x2009;=&#x2009;0.41, p&#x2009;<&#x2009;0.001), higher resting energy expenditure (r&#x2009;=&#x2009;0.49, p&#x2009;<&#x2009;0.001), higher LFC (r&#x2009;=&#x2009;0.40, p&#x2009;=&#x2009;0.011), and greater&#xa0;left ventricular wall thickness (r&#x2009;=&#x2009;0.42, p&#x2009;=&#x2009;0.001). The intervention did not significantly impact Hb levels, and changes in Hb levels did not correlate with most cardiometabolic changes. However, reduced Hb levels correlated with reduced fasting blood glucose (r&#x2009;=&#x2009;0.29, p&#x2009;=&#x2009;0.032), improved insulin sensitivity (r = -0.26, p&#x2009;=&#x2009;0.045), and increased cardiorespiratory fitness (r = -0.29, p&#x2009;=&#x2009;0.033). CONCLUSIONS: Changes in Hb levels did not consistently correlate with changes in cardiometabolic markers during&#xa0;the intervention. However, reductions in Hb levels may relate to improved insulin sensitivity and fitness. Along&#xa0;cross-sectional correlations, this may be clinically relevant for individuals with metabolic syndrome. Further studies are merited to clarify&#xa0;the role of Hb levels in this high-risk group.

Proteomic serum profiles before and after lipoprotein apheresis in patients with peripheral artery disease with ulceration.

INTRODUCTION: The efficacy of lipoprotein apheresis (LA) in peripheral arterial disease (PAD) has been primarily attributed to its anti-atherosclerotic effects through the adsorption of lipoproteins. However, the other potential effects of LA remain unknown. We evaluated changes in serum profiles before and after LA using a comprehensive analysis to explore the underlying mechanism. METHODS: Ten patients with leg ulcers were included from the LETS-PAD study, in which patients with lipoprotein-controlled PAD underwent LA. Serum samples collected at baseline and 1&#x2009;month after LA were analyzed for proteomic changes. RESULTS: Six patients exhibited ulcer epithelialization and skin perfusion pressure improvement. Proteomic analysis identified 2033 proteins. Fifty-five proteins showed significant differences. B-cell lymphoma protein-2 associated X (BAX) and C-X-C motif chemokine 10 (CXCL10) were downregulated. CONCLUSION: Serum BAX and CXCL10 levels significantly decreased after LA, which may be involved in the ulcer epithelialization mechanism of LA, which potentially acts through angiogenesis promotion.

Pharmacokinetic Differences Between Fast-Acting, Standard, and Placebo Cannabis Edibles.

INTRODUCTION: Edibles have become the second-most used cannabis product in legal U.S. states, wherein 64% of cannabis consumers reported using edibles within the past year. Among expansions to the legal cannabis industry are the newly marketed "fast-acting" edible compounds, which may address many of the issues associated with edible use related to overdose and dose management. The study hypotheses were that fast-acting edibles would reach peak concentration significantly faster than standard edibles and placebo edibles. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty participants completed three arms within-subjects designed study to test hypotheses. The three arms were ingestion of a (1) fast-acting edible, (2) a standard edible, and (3) a &#x394;9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) terpene-derived placebo edible that was indistinguishable from the two THC-containing edibles. Blood plasma was analyzed for the presence of THC and THC analytes. The pharmacokinetic parameters tested were time to max concentration (Tmax), maximum concentration (Cmax), terminal half-life (t1/2), and area under the curve (AUC). RESULTS: Results supported study hypotheses in that Tmax was significantly faster for the fast-acting edible, observed 30 min post-ingestion and, on average, 30 min earlier than the Tmax for the standard edible. There were no significant differences between the fast-acting and standard edibles on Cmax, t1/2, and AUC; however, both the fast-acting and standard edibles were significantly different compared with the placebo across all pharmacokinetic parameters. DISCUSSION: The results indicate that the microencapsulation technology used to create the fast-acting edible enabled analyte concentrations to peak significantly faster compared to the standard and placebo edibles.

HYPNOSA: Study protocol for a prospective observational cohort of patients with obstructive sleep apnea.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a common chronic disease that affects more than 20% of the adult population. One of the most frequent and characteristic symptoms of OSA is excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS). This symptom is typically treated in patients with OSA with the application of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), the gold-standard treatment for this disease. In some patients who are adequately treated with CPAP, residual excessive daytime sleepiness (REDS) persists. The prevalence, associations, and outcomes associated with REDS remain poorly understood. METHODS: Multicenter, prospective, observational cohort study including 1000 patients. Participants will undergo a sleep study for the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, clinical assessment, quality-of-life questionnaires, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, and collection of biochemical variables and biological samples. Patients with OSA will receive standard care, and those prescribed continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) will be monitored for treatment adherence. OSA patients will be assessed at baseline and at 6, 12, and 24 months. DISSCUSION: We aim to establish a prospective observational cohort of patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) treated with CPAP, with and without REDS. The HYPNOSA project will create the largest available registry of patients with OSA and REDS using real-world data, providing accurate prevalence estimates and long-term outcomes. The effect of dietetic counseling combined with digital tools intervention on hemodynamic markers in Greek adults: The GATEKEEPER Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Hypertension is a leading cardiovascular risk factor with substantial global impact on morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. While lifestyle interventions remain central to management, mHealth technologies offer promising adjunctive support, though their clinical effectiveness remains uncertain. This study evaluated whether combining dietetic counseling with digital tools improves hemodynamic markers in adults aged &#x2265;55 years with increased cardiometabolic risk. METHODS AND RESULTS: This 3-month RCT (NCT05031299) included 954 adults with at least one metabolic syndrome risk factor, allocated 1:1:1 to Standard Care (dietetic counseling), Platform (counseling plus web-based platform), or Platform&#xa0;+&#xa0;Devices (counseling plus platform plus wearables). Outcomes included anthropometrics, lifestyle characteristics, blood pressure, pulse pressure, and estimated pulse wave velocity, analyzed using linear mixed-effects models adjusted for age and sex. All groups improved over 3 months. Waist circumference decreased by -6.29, -4.92, and -4.69&#xa0;cm across Standard Care, Platform, and Platform&#xa0;+&#xa0;Devices groups respectively, and systolic blood pressure declined by -4.84 to -7.15&#xa0;mmHg across groups. The Platform&#xa0;+&#xa0;Devices group showed greater increases in physical activity (94.62 MET-min/week; 95% CI 66.49 to 122.76) and greater reductions in pulse pressure (-3.90&#xa0;mmHg; -6.58 to -1.22) versus Standard Care. Weight loss was associated with lower odds of hypertension (OR 0.4; 95% CI 0.2-0.7), greater likelihood of hypertension reversal (OR 3.6; 1.2-10.3), and higher probability of achieving normal pulse pressure (OR 1.8; 1.1-3.1). CONCLUSIONS: Dietary lifestyle intervention improved cardiometabolic outcomes, with limited added benefit from digital tools. Weight loss was the primary driver of hemodynamic improvement.

Long-term glycemic variability and risk of peripheral artery disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: A systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the impact of long-term glucose variability (GV) on the risk of developing peripheral artery disease (PAD). METHODS: The protocol was prospectively registered in PROSPERO (ID: CRD420251148763). Relevant longitudinal studies were identified through comprehensive searches of PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science. The primary outcome was the risk ratio (RR) of PAD comparing participants with high versus low GV. Summary effect sizes were calculated using a random-effects model to account for between-study heterogeneity. RESULTS: Eleven cohorts were included. Higher GV showed a positive association with PAD risk (RR: 1.42; 95% CI [1.21-1.66] p&#xa0;<&#xa0;0.001), although substantial heterogeneity was present (I 2&#xa0;=&#xa0;91%). This association was consistent across subgroups defined by region (Asian vs. Western), study design, diabetic status, GV metrics, PAD diagnostic methods, and adjustment for HbA1c (all p for subgroup differences > 0.05), except for follow-up duration. Studies with follow-up < 8 years showed a stronger association than those with &#x2265; 8 years (RR: 1.64 vs. 1.19; p for subgroup difference = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS: Elevated long-term GV appears to be associated with an increased risk of PAD. However, substantial heterogeneity across studies suggests that the magnitude of this association should be interpreted with caution.

Effects of time-restricted eating on markers of glucose metabolism and regulation in individuals with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the effects of time-restricted eating (TRE) on glucose metabolism and regulation in individuals with prediabetes (fasting blood glucose of 5.6-6.9 mmol/l or HbA1c of 39-47 mmol/mol [5.7-6.4%]) or type 2 diabetes (fasting blood glucose &#x2265;7 mmol/l or HbA1c &#x2265;48 mmol/mol [6.5%]). METHODS: A literature search was performed in MEDLINE, Embase and CENTRAL from inception to 5 August 2025. Moreover, forward and backward citation searches were performed. Eligible studies were RCTs in adults with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, lasting &#x2265;2 weeks, reporting markers of glucose metabolism and regulation, comparing TRE (&#x2264;12 h eating window) with a non-time-restricted control diet. Studies involving pregnancy, other fasting regimens, or non-peer-reviewed publications were excluded. Data were pooled as weighted mean differences with 95% CIs using random-effects generic inverse variance models in Cochrane Review Manager Web, and results are presented as forest plots. The certainty of evidence was defined using Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations methodology, and risk of bias was estimated by using the Revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomised trials (RoB 2). RESULTS: Out of 2043 records identified through the database search, as well as 1249 from forward and backward citation searches, ten RCTs including 599 participants were included. The mean length of the studies was 4 months, and the eating windows ranged from 4 to 10 h per day. The pooled meta-analysis showed no overall effect of TRE on HbA1c (-3.33 mmol/mol; 95% CI -6.87, 0.20 (-0.30% points; -0.63, 0.02); p=0.06, moderate certainty). Nevertheless, following stratification by subgroups, TRE resulted in a reduction in HbA1c of 0.93 mmol/mol (-1.70, -0.17 [-0.09% points; -0.16, -0.02]; p=0.02) in individuals with prediabetes but not in individuals with type 2 diabetes (-4.68 mmol/mol; -10.08, 0.72 (-0.43% points; -0.92, 0.07); p=0.09). TRE reduced fasting blood glucose in the pooled analysis (-0.30 mmol/l; -0.53, -0.07; p<0.01, moderate certainty) as well as in the subgroup analyses in individuals with prediabetes (-0.14 mmol/l; -0.27, -0.01; p=0.03) and with type 2 diabetes (-0.48 mmol/l; -0.78, -0.17; p<0.01). Moreover, TRE lowered body weight by 1.6 kg (-2.2, -1.0; p<0.001) in the pooled analysis. The evidence was limited by imprecision arising from wide confidence intervals in some of the included studies, which may be due to small sample sizes. Lastly, the effects of TRE on markers of insulin sensitivity, beta cell function and continuous glucose monitoring measurements were inconclusive. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: Moderate-certainty evidence indicates that TRE reduces fasting blood glucose but not HbA1c. The subgroup analyses revealed that TRE improved HbA1c and fasting glucose in individuals with prediabetes and improved fasting glucose in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Future large-scale studies should investigate long-term effects of TRE in prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes. Closed-loop insulin delivery for glycaemic control in hospitalised and perioperative adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.

We evaluated whether closed-loop insulin delivery improves glycaemic control in hospitalised and perioperative adults. PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, CENTRAL, and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched from inception to 29 June 2026 for randomised controlled trials comparing closed-loop or automated insulin delivery with usual care or conventional insulin therapy. Random-effects meta-analyses were conducted; risk of bias was assessed using RoB 2 and certainty of evidence using GRADE. Seven trials involving 375 analysed participants were included. Closed-loop insulin delivery increased time in target glucose range by 23.91 percentage points (95% CI 19.40 to 28.43; I2&#xa0;=&#xa0;0%) and reduced mean glucose by 1.79&#xa0;mmol/L (95% CI 1.06 to 2.53 lower; I2&#xa0;=&#xa0;36.3%); certainty was moderate for both outcomes. Two trials involving 69 participants reported compatible participant-level data for clinically significant hyperglycaemia, and both estimates favoured closed-loop insulin delivery, although the evidence was exploratory and imprecise. No severe hypoglycaemic events occurred in either group, precluding reliable estimation of comparative safety. Closed-loop insulin delivery may improve glycaemic process measures, but larger pragmatic trials are needed to establish clinical benefits, safety, and implementation feasibility.

A review on the environmental distribution, toxic effects, bioaccumulation characteristics and risk assessment of short-chain chlorinated paraffins.

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are synthetic chemicals, widely used as flame retardants and plasticizers. As emerging contaminants, short chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) have attracted tremendous attention due to their persistence, chronic toxicity, long-range transport potential and bioaccumulation potential. This review synthesizes global data on SCCPs' environmental occurrence, toxicological impacts, and bioaccumulation characteristics. SCCPs are ubiquitously detected in various environmental media, including water, sediment, air, soil, and biota. Ecotoxicological studies reveal that SCCPs have lethality, carcinogenicity, growth and developmental toxicities, organs toxicities and endocrine-disrupting effects across species, which pose risks to ecological systems and human health. In addition, the bioaccumulation effects of SCCPs in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems were analyzed, and proposed the key factors affecting the bioaccumulation of SCCPs. Finally, the risk assessment of SCCPs contamination in the surface water and the soil was carried out, and all soil and most water bodies were found to be low risk. The present study could provide scientific basis and reference for environmental management of CPs products.

Prevalence of Theileria luwenshuni in goats (Capra hircus) on Tarama Island, Okinawa, Japan.

Caprine theileriosis is an economically important tick-borne disease caused by various Theileria species, particularly Theileria lestoquardi, Theileria luwenshuni, and Theileria uilenbergi, in goats (Capra hircus). Goat farming plays an economically and culturally important role on Tarama Island, Okinawa, Japan. Because goats on the island are mainly managed under an extensive grazing system, tick infestation is common. However, Theileria infections have not previously been investigated in goats on Tarama Island. To address this, archived DNA samples prepared from blood collected from 44 goats on Tarama Island were screened using a universal PCR assay targeting 18S rRNA sequences of Theileria and Babesia species. Two DNA samples were positive, and sequencing analysis of the amplicons identified T. luwenshuni. To further investigate the epidemiology of T. luwenshuni on Tarama Island, blood samples were subsequently collected from 96 goats across 19 farms. From each blood sample, a thin blood smear was prepared and genomic DNA was extracted. Microscopic examination of Diff-Quik-stained smears detected intraerythrocytic Theileria-like organisms in 35 (36.5%) goats. In addition, screening of DNA samples using a newly developed T. luwenshuni-specific PCR assay detected 77 (80.2%) positive goats, and the subsequent sequencing analysis confirmed the PCR results. Given that T. luwenshuni can cause severe disease in small ruminants, our findings highlight the importance of managing T. luwenshuni infection in goats on Tarama Island.

Hydrogen-rich water combined with traditional Chinese medicine compound in the treatment of kidney stones: a randomized controlled prospective clinical trial.

Hydrogen-rich water has clear efficacy in antioxidant and improving inflammatory status, while Ye-Shi-Shi-Lin-Formula is a clinically effective traditional Chinese medicine compound preparation for treating kidney stones. This randomized controlled prospective clinical trial from July 2025 to March 2026 at the Seventh People's Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine examined the effect of hydrogen-rich water and Ye-Shi-Shi-Lin-Formula on kidney stones. The included 100 patients with kidney stones were randomly divided into blank, hydrogen-rich water, hydrogen-rich water and Chinese medicine, and Chinese medicines groups. The patients received drinking hydrogen-rich water and/or Ye-Shi-Shi-Lin-Formula daily for 12 weeks. All subjects received basic treatment following the guidelines. Imaging examination, urine metabolism testing, renal function, inflammation and oxidative stress index, blood routine and liver function are used to detect the efficacy and safety of hydrogen-rich water and Ye-Shi-Shi-Lin-Formula. Results showed that the total effective rate of kidney stone treatment in blank group, Chinese medicines group, hydrogen-rich water and Chinese medicine group and hydrogen-rich water group was 28%, 76%, 80% and 32%. The Ye-Shi-Shi-Lin-Formula can partially alleviate the oxidative stress, uric acid metabolism and urinary magnesium levels of patients with kidney stone and improve the function of renal tubules. The hydrogen-rich water therapy showed only efficacy in improving glutathione reductase but the combination of hydrogen-rich water and Ye-Shi-Shi-Lin-Formula has shown superior efficacy in improving oxidative stress and related metabolic factors of blood uric acid and urine stones, as well as in renal tubular function. The results indicate that the addition of hydrogen-rich water can improve urinary metabolism and oxidative stress status in the treatment of kidney stones with Ye-Shi-Shi-Lin-Formula.
