Reducing state anxiety with alpha-frequency transcranial alternating current stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety reactivity to acute stress is a transdiagnostic vulnerability factor. We tested whether a single session of alpha-frequency transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) targeting the frontoparietal control network reduces stress-evoked state anxiety in healthy adults. METHODS: In a randomized, blinded, sham-controlled study, 42 participants (mean age 58.9 years) completed an acute stress task before and after stimulation. The task was an adapted moving-circles paradigm in which circle collisions triggered a brief aversive event (mild electric shock plus unpleasant noise and a white flash). Active stimulation consisted of 20 min of 10-Hz tACS (2.0 mA/channel; 30-s ramp up/down) delivered via electrodes at F3, P3, Cz, and T7 (0° phase at F3/P3; 180° at Cz/T7). Sham stimulation used the same montage and ramp periods but no sustained current. RESULTS: State anxiety showed a significant Time × Protocol interaction (F(1,35) = 4.22, p = .047): STAI-S decreased after active tACS (Δ = -3.16) but increased slightly after sham (Δ = +1.17). Perceived stress appraisal (SAAS) did not change. Resting-state alpha power at F3/P3 showed no reliable pre-post effects. During the task, left-frontal relative alpha differed by protocol and showed a trend toward larger increases following active tACS. Electrodermal and pupil indices changed across sessions in both groups, with no differential stimulation effects. CONCLUSIONS: A single alpha-tACS session produced a modest, selective reduction in stress-evoked state anxiety, supporting oscillatory neuromodulation as a scalable approach to dampen anxiety reactivity.

Respiratory-swallow coordination training using bimodal signal biofeedback for patients with post-stroke dysphagia: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose was to investigate the effects of respiratory-swallow coordination training with bimodal signal biofeedback on swallowing function in patients with post-stroke dysphagia. METHODS: Post-stroke dysphagia Patients were randomly assigned to either the control group or the experimental group. The control group received conventional rehabilitation, while the experimental group underwent additional respiratory-swallow coordination training based on biofeedback. The training protocol consisted of three phases, conducted at an intensity of 30 min/day, 6 days/week, for two consecutive weeks. Outcome measures included the Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS) score, the Rosenbek Penetration-Aspiration Scale (PAS) score, respiratory-swallow coordination, and videofluoroscopic swallowing study temporal and kinematic parameter. Assessments were conducted at baseline, post-treatment, and at a one-month follow-up. RESULTS: Thirty patients were enrolled. Both groups showed significant improvement in FOIS scores from baseline to both two-week post-treatment and one-month follow-up (p < 0.001). Compared to the controls, the experimental group demonstrated significantly greater FOIS scoreimprovement at both post-treatment and follow-up (p < 0.001). The proportion of patients with a ≥ 2-point increase in FOIS scores was significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group at both post-treatment (p < 0.01) and one-month follow-up (p < 0.01). After two weeks of treatment, the percentage of PAS scores ≥6 was significantly lower in the experimental group than in the control group (p < 0.001). Additionally, the percentage of optimal respiratory-swallow pattern was significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Bimodal signal biofeedback-based respiratory-swallow coordination training can effectively improve respiratory-swallow coordination and swallowing function in patients with post-stroke dysphagia.

Exploring the experiences, views, and needs of family members of emergency response workers: a systematic review and meta-synthesis.

Background: Emergency responders, including firefighters, police officers, and paramedics, face workplace challenges that may harm their well-being. They typically rely on family members for support, which may have damaging effects on the family system. While the experiences of emergency responders are well established, their families' subsequent struggles are less well explored. Objective: This review explores the experiences, views, and needs of family members, through determining the mental health and well-being issues that they face, and establishing ways in which family members could be supported.Method: We searched five databases (MEDLINE, Embase, PsychINFO, Scopus, and ProQuest) for qualitative papers exploring experiences of family members of emergency responders. Seventeen studies met the inclusion criteria, and data were meta-synthesized using thematic analysis. Results: Six themes and two subthemes were identified from the meta-synthesis. 'Experiences of emotional strain' reflected worry over safety and coping with volatile moods. 'Increased responsibilities' involved safeguarding emergency responders' well-being and managing household duties, at the expense of family members' own needs. Families felt 'devoted yet invisible', with sacrifices overlooked by both emergency responders and society. 'Impacts on the family dynamic' included relational detachment and frustration. 'Support for emergency responder families' from fellow emergency responder families was valued, but organizational support was limited. 'Media portrayal and societal perceptions' varied, as police families faced hostility, while firefighter and paramedic families garnered respect, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusions: This review highlights that family members play a central role in maintaining the well-being of emergency responders, yet simultaneously face hardships associated with their family member's work and feel undervalued despite their support. This lack of recognition extends to limited professional support. There is a critical need for targeted mental health interventions to support family members, alongside family support measures from emergency responder organizations to assist with the practical difficulties faced by families.

Early-stage trajectories of social-occupational functioning and long-term functional outcome prediction in early psychosis: A 12-year follow-up of the randomized controlled trial on extended early intervention.

BACKGROUND: Functional impairment in psychosis often persists despite symptomatic remission. There is a paucity of research examining early-course psychosocial functioning trajectories, and none has been conducted to examine relationship between the trajectories and prospective long-term functional outcomes in early psychosis sample. METHODS: We conducted 12-year follow-up of a randomized controlled trial on extended early intervention for first-episode psychosis to identify early-course social-occupational functioning trajectories and their baseline predictors and associations with 12-year outcomes. Participants who completed Social and Occupational Functioning Scale (SOFAS) scores at three or more timepoints between baseline and 3-year follow-up were included in the study. Premorbid adjustment, illness characteristics, symptom severity, functioning, and treatment profiles were assessed. Latent growth mixture modeling was employed to derive early-course social-occupational functioning trajectories based on SOFAS scores over 3-year follow-up. RESULTS: A total of 148 participants were included in this study, with 106 patients having completed the 12-year follow-up. Our results identified four distinct trajectories, including persistently-good class, gradually-improved class, suboptimal-stable class, and persistently-poor class. Patients in persistently-poor class had more severe negative symptoms at baseline compared to patients in persistently-good class. Patients with persistently-poor trajectory had worse long-term outcomes than those with other classes in the majority of functional measures at 12-year follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: The majority of patients were classified in early-stage suboptimal or poor functional trajectories. Above one-fourth of the participants exhibited persistently-poor social-occupational functioning trajectory, which predicted worse functional outcomes at 12-year follow-up. These findings highlighted the importance of tracking functional changes during the initial years of illness.

Efficacy of a high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation for craving reduction in adolescents with gaming disorder: a 4-week randomized control trial with 24-week follow-up.

BACKGROUND: With the widespread popularity of online gaming, gaming addiction has come under scrutiny. While there is ongoing research on the diagnosis and treatment of gaming disorder among adolescents, the clinical robustness and reliability of intervention strategies remain uncertain. METHODS: A 4-week, double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of noninvasive, high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in alleviating psychological craving in adolescents diagnosed with gaming disorder. Sham rTMS was administered to the control group using the tilted-coil method. Both groups of participants were treated with SSRI medications. A total of 80 adolescents with gaming disorder participated in this study, and 73 ultimately completed the 24-week follow-up. The primary outcome was the change in craving levels before and after the rTMS intervention, as assessed by the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Secondary outcomes included changes in anxiety and depression levels before and after the intervention, as assessed by the HAMA and HAMD. RESULTS: We assessed levels of psychological craving, anxiety, and depression among adolescents with gaming disorder at baseline, after completing a 4-week intervention, and at a 24-week follow-up post-intervention. Our repeated-measures MANOVA results, adjusted for course variables, revealed a significant main effect of rTMS intervention on psychological craving levels in adolescents addicted to online games (F(11, 781) = 11.238, P < 0.001, partial η² = 0.142), as well as significant main effects on time (F(11, 781) = 6.809; P < 0.001, partial η² = 0.091) and group effects (F(1, 71) = 26.707, P < 0.001, partial η² = 0.282). In addition, repeated-measures ANOVA results showed significant time effects for anxiety (F(2, 142) = 20.747, P < 0.001, partial η² = 0.234) and depression levels (F(2, 142) = 22.277, P < 0.001, partial η² = 0.285) among adolescents with gaming disorder, with nonsignificant between-group effects and no intergroup interaction. In the active stimulation group, changes in psychological craving levels after 4 weeks of treatment were significantly and positively correlated with changes in anxiety levels after 4 weeks of treatment in adolescents addicted to online games (r = 0.335, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that high-frequency rTMS targeting the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex may be a promising approach for reducing psychological craving in adolescents with gaming disorder. Targeting depression before it starts: An updated systematic review and meta-analysis of preventive interventions in young adults from randomized controlled trials.

INTRODUCTION: Young adulthood is a high-risk period for major depressive disorder (MDD) onset yet is underrepresented in prevention research. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the effectiveness of psychosocial preventive interventions in adults aged 18-25 years, focusing on symptom reduction, medium- and long-term effects, and MDD onset. METHODS: We conducted a PRISMA-compliant systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO: CRD42024625481) of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of psychosocial preventive interventions for depression in young adults (18-25) published up to April 15, 2025. Between-group symptom reduction was quantified using Hedges' g and pooled with random-effects models. Outcomes were analyzed at post-intervention, 6-, and 12-month follow-up. Effects on MDD onset were assessed via risk ratio (RR). Risk of bias was assessed with the RoB-2 tool. RESULTS: We included 65 interventions from 58 RCTs (N = 11,333; mean age 20.4; 61.6% female), with 92.8% rated high risk of bias. Interventions at post-test reduced depressive symptoms vs. controls (k = 65; g = -0.52; 95%CI:-0.70;-0.33; p < 0.01), with significant heterogeneity (I2 = 93.0%). Indicated, guided, and face-to-face interventions outperformed universal, selective, self-guided, and online interventions. Effects on symptomatology were highly heterogeneous and non-significant at 6- (k = 8) and 12-month (k = 4) follow-up. Four RCTs were identified evaluating MDD onset risk; pooled effects suggested a reduction in MDD onset (RR = 0.77; 95%CI:0.61;0.97; p < 0.01) though risk of bias was high and samples were highly selective. INTERPRETATION: Psychosocial preventive interventions modestly reduce depressive symptoms at post-test and may lower onset risk in highly selective populations. However, findings remain limited by high risk of bias, scarce data on the long-term sustainability of effects, and unclear mechanisms.

Effectiveness of Internet-Delivered Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (ICBT) in Improving Weight-Loss and Psychosocial Well-Being Among Adults With High BMI: A Systematic Review.

AIM: To examine the effectiveness of Internet-delivered Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (ICBT) in improving psychosocial well-being and promoting weight-loss in adults ≥ 18 years with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2. BACKGROUND: Global obesity engenders significant physical and psychosocial health consequences. Second-wave ICBT focused on restructuring negative thoughts and behaviours has been explored as a potential intervention for elevated BMI and mental health concerns, but its effectiveness remains to be fully established, making further evaluation essential. METHODS AND DATA SOURCES: Eight databases were searched from inception to January 2025 for randomised controlled trials (RCTs), including participants ≥ 18 years with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 and second-wave ICBT evaluating BMI, weight, depression, eating behaviours, and self-esteem. This review followed PRISMA 2020. Study quality was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias (ROB 2) and GRADE. Data were extracted using a modified Cochrane form. Random-effects meta-analysis calculated Standardised Mean Differences (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals, with subgroup analyses exploring heterogeneity. RESULTS: Nine trials with 2278 participants were included. Significant improvements were seen in BMI, weight, and depressive symptoms while self-esteem effects were small and non-significant. Compared with passive controls, ICBT showed greater improvements in BMI and weight, whereas differences versus active control were smaller and inconsistent. Face-to-face CBT demonstrated superior outcomes for depression and self-esteem. Male-tailored interventions showed greater improvements. Shorter programmes yielded larger short-term weight loss, while longer programmes supported more sustained effects. Narrative synthesis indicated improvements in emotional and external eating, with increased mindful and restrictive eating behaviours. CONCLUSION: ICBT improved weight, BMI, and depressive symptoms, with limited evidence for self-esteem. Male-tailored interventions and longer programmes may enhance sustainable outcomes. IMPACT: Future ICBT programs should integrate strategies targeting sustainable weight loss and psychosocial well-being to support long-term outcomes. Organizational bullying among nursing faculty: A systematic review of consequences, contributing factors, and interventions.

BACKGROUND: Organizational bullying among nursing faculty is a systemic and pervasive issue with profound psychological, professional, and institutional consequences. Despite increasing awareness, the literature remains fragmented, and a comprehensive synthesis is lacking. METHODS: This systematic review followed PRISMA guidelines and examined empirical studies on organizational bullying among nursing faculty, with no date restrictions applied. A structured search across five databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL, and Embase) identified studies that met inclusion criteria related to the consequences, contributing factors, and interventions. The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) was used to assess study quality. RESULTS: Fifteen studies meeting the quality threshold were included. Organizational bullying was consistently associated with psychological distress (e.g., anxiety, depression, burnout, suicidal ideation), professional disengagement, and intent to leave. Contributing factors were categorized into structural and organizational (e.g., hierarchical power imbalances, toxic workplace culture), managerial and HR-related (e.g., lack of leadership support, poor reporting mechanisms), and individual/social (e.g., gender or ethnic discrimination, early-career vulnerability). Intervention strategies identified included policy reforms, leadership training, supportive reporting systems, and psychological support services, though evidence on their effectiveness remains limited. CONCLUSIONS: Organizational bullying in nursing academia is a serious and multifaceted challenge with detrimental effects on individuals and institutions. Addressing it requires a comprehensive, evidence-based approach that includes structural reforms, leadership development, and psychosocial support systems. Academic institutions must prioritize the creation of safe, inclusive, and respectful environments to retain faculty and sustain the quality of nursing education.

Associations of Illness Perception, Resignation Coping, and Social Support With Self-Regulatory Fatigue in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes: A Cross-Sectional Study.

AIMS: To examine the associations among illness perception, resignation coping, social support, and self-regulatory fatigue (SRF) in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus. The study specifically explores whether resignation coping and social support exhibit indirect associations with SRF in the context of illness perception. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. METHODS: From November 2024 to October 2025, a convenience sample of 302 adult patients with T2DM was recruited from a tertiary general hospital in China. Participants completed validated instruments with established psychometric properties, namely the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire, the Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire, the Perceived Social Support Scale, and the Self-Regulatory Fatigue Scale. Statistical analyses included Spearman correlation and serial mediation analysis using the PROCESS Macro (Model 6) with bias-corrected bootstrapping. RESULTS: SRF was positively correlated with negative illness perception (r = 0.579, p < 0.01) and resignation coping (r = 0.612, p < 0.01), and negatively correlated with social support (r = -0.598, p < 0.01). Serial mediation analysis revealed that illness perception was associated with SRF through indirect pathways involving resignation coping and social support. Resignation coping and social support mediated the association between illness perception and self-regulatory fatigue, both individually and sequentially. CONCLUSIONS: Negative illness perception correlates with higher SRF. This observed correlation is additionally linked to indirect pathways involving resignation coping and lower social support. Collectively, these findings highlight a pattern of interrelated cognitive (illness perception), behavioural (resignation coping), and resource (social support) factors that are associated with self-regulatory fatigue in this cross-sectional study. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION: The findings offer a clear, evidence-based framework for nursing practice. They highlight the potential value of integrated assessment and intervention that simultaneously addresses patients' illness beliefs, maladaptive coping strategies, and social support systems, which are associated with lower SRF and better diabetes self-management. REPORTING METHOD: This study adheres to the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) guidelines for cross-sectional studies. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: Patients participated solely as research participants by providing survey data. They were not involved in the study design, implementation, data analysis, interpretation, or manuscript preparation. All patients provided written informed consent prior to questionnaire completion.

The efficacy of modified psychodynamic psychotherapy for patients with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders in Germany: a prospective, single-centre, assessor-blinded, parallel-group, randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: People with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders have difficulties in interpersonal functioning that remain insufficiently addressed by standard care. Despite long-standing clinical use, psychodynamic psychotherapy has little empirical support compared with other psychosocial treatments for people with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. We evaluated the efficacy of Modified Psychodynamic Psychotherapy for Schizophrenia (MPP-S), a manualised treatment tailored to the interpersonal vulnerability characteristic of this population, plus treatment as usual (TAU), compared with TAU alone. METHODS: This prospective, single-centre, assessor-blinded, parallel-group, randomised controlled trial was conducted at the Psychiatric University Hospital of the Charité at St Hedwig Hospital in Berlin, Germany. Participants were outpatients aged 18-64 years who were diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder and exclusion criteria included organic brain disorder, somatic illness affecting cerebral function, and current or past alcohol or illicit drug misuse requiring addiction-specific treatment. Participants were randomly assigned 1:1 in blocks of ten to MPP-S (minimum 30 sessions) plus TAU or TAU alone. Outcome assessors were masked, but participants and therapists were not. The primary outcome was psychosocial functioning, measured using the Mini International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health Rating for Limitations of Activities and Participation in Psychological Disorders (Mini-ICF-APP) and evaluated at baseline and prespecified post-treatment (24 months) and follow-up (36 months) assessments. Analyses followed the intention-to-treat principle. Linear mixed models were used to analyse incomplete longitudinal data under a missing-at-random assumption. People with lived experience were not formally involved in the design, conduct, or reporting of this study. This trial was preregistered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT02576613) and is complete. FINDINGS: From Oct 12, 2015, to Dec 7, 2021, 130 participants (57 [44%] female and 73 [56%] male) were randomly assigned to either MPP-S plus TAU (n=65) or TAU alone (n=64). One participant withdrew consent to data analysis. Regarding the primary outcome of psychosocial functioning, linear mixed models showed significant group-by-time interactions favouring the intervention: estimated marginal means indicated adjusted between-group differences in Mini-ICF-APP scores of -3·45 (95% CI -5·51 to -1·40; p=0·0011) at 24 months and -4·07 (-6·19 to -1·94; p=0·0002) at 36 months. The frequency of adverse events was similar between groups. There were three serious adverse events: two participants died by suicide (one in the MPP-S plus TAU group who did not start psychotherapy and one in the TAU alone group) and one participant in the MPP-S plus TAU group was admitted to a forensic hospital. INTERPRETATION: MPP-S added to TAU could improve psychosocial functioning compared with TAU alone. Our findings suggest efficacy and possible long-term benefits of psychodynamic psychotherapy for schizophrenia-spectrum disorders and indicate its potential role alongside other psychotherapeutic and psychosocial treatments. Standardized visual overlays enhance laparoscopic instruction: A mixed-methods evaluation.

Effective communication during laparoscopic procedures is frequently undermined by spatial disorientation and inconsistent terminology between instructors and trainees. This study examined whether standardized visual overlays on endoscopic monitors could enhance communication and learning. We conducted a three-phase mixed-methods study: qualitative observation of 20 laparoscopic teaching cases; a randomized trial of 63 second-year medical students assigned to control, clock, or alphanumeric grid (AG) overlays during three trials of a standardized transfer task; and intraoperative implementation in 44 cases (30 AG, 14 clock) with post-case surveys and qualitative feedback. In simulation, the clock overlay produced the fastest completion times, whereas the AG yielded the lowest error scores, and both overlays outperformed the control. Intraoperatively, the AG was rated higher than the clock for communication clarity, spatial orientation, perceived operative efficiency, and trainee confidence. Standardized visual overlays, particularly the AG, appear to support intraoperative teaching by providing a shared spatial frame of reference.

Digital Mindfulness Intervention for Pregnant Women With Affective Disorders and Acute Stress Reactions: Prespecified Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women with ICD-10 (International Statistical Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision) affective or stress-related disorders face an elevated risk of perinatal depression and anxiety, yet evidence on digital nonpharmacologic interventions for this population remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the effectiveness of an 8-week digital mindfulness-based intervention (eMBI) compared with treatment as usual (TAU) among pregnant women with ICD-10 affective or stress-related disorders participating in a randomized controlled trial (RCT). METHODS: This prespecified secondary analysis was conducted within a multicenter RCT in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Pregnant women aged 18 years and older with elevated depressive symptoms (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale [EPDS]>9) and ICD-10-diagnosed affective or stress-related disorders were randomized 1:1 to eMBI or TAU. The intervention consisted of 8 weekly app-based mindfulness sessions (45 min each) delivered during gestational weeks 29-36, with no direct therapist contact. The primary outcome was continuous depressive symptom severity measured with the EPDS at 4-6 weeks post partum. Secondary outcomes included the EPDS at 6 months post partum, generalized anxiety (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-State [STAI-S], State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-Trait [STAI-T]), and Pregnancy-Related Anxiety Questionnaire-Revised (PRAQ-R). Analyses followed the intention-to-treat (ITT) principle, using mixed models for repeated measures and multiple imputation. RESULTS: Of the 5299 screened women, 147 met the inclusion criteria for this subgroup analysis (intervention group [IG] had n=73 women and control group had n=74 women). Groups were comparable at baseline. The IG showed significantly greater reductions in EPDS scores at gestational week 34 (Δ=-2.21, P=.01), week 36 (Δ=-3.25, P=.01), and 4-6 weeks post partum (Δ=-4.81, P=.007). Treatment effects remained robust under conservative missing-data assumptions. At 4-6 weeks post partum, a higher proportion of participants in the IG achieved clinically meaningful improvement (31/73, 42.5% vs 21/74, 28.4%; adjusted odds ratio 1.56, 95% CI 1.19-2.05; P=.001). Anxiety outcomes followed a similar pattern, whereas pregnancy-related anxiety did not differ between groups. CONCLUSIONS: In this prespecified subgroup of pregnant women with ICD-10 affective or stress-related disorders, the eMBI was associated with clinically meaningful reductions in depressive symptoms from late pregnancy to 4-6 weeks post partum. Effects at 6 months post partum were attenuated and less stable across missing-data assumptions. These findings support eMBIs as a scalable, nonpharmacological adjunct to perinatal mental health care for women with affective or stress-related disorders, while confirmation in adequately powered trials with strategies to reduce postpartum attrition is warranted.

Morphology-engineered NiFe@C nanocages boosting electrochemical quantification of ractopamine in meat samples.

It is essential to acquire efficient electrocatalysts to develop ractopamine (RAC) electrochemical sensors. Herein, we report the synthesis of a series of carbon coated NiFe alloy nanostructures (e.g., NiFe@C nanoparticles, nanocubes and nanocages) using NiFe Prussian blue analogue (PBA) as the precursor. The NiFe@C nanocages exhibited the best electrocatalytic performance for RAC sensing. This is attributed to the embedded NiFe alloy nanoparticles that provide abundant active sites, and the unique nanocage structure facilitates electron transfer pathways while offering a high specific surface area. The resulting sensor achieves a low detection limit (LOD) of 54 nM (S/N = 3) within a linear range of 0.2-12 μM. Moreover, the sensor demonstrates good reproducibility, stability, and excellent long-term stability. Practical applicability was confirmed in meat samples, yielding satisfactory recovery rates ranging from 98% to 108%. A feasible strategy was introduced herein for rational design of metal@carbon electrocatalysts.

Recent advances in supramolecular macrocycle-based artificial light-harvesting systems.

Artificial light-harvesting systems (ALHSs) inspired by the antenna function of natural photosynthesis provide molecular platforms for collecting excitation energy and directing it to emissive or reactive acceptors. In many supramolecular ALHSs, however, practical performance is limited by poorly defined donor-acceptor orientation, aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ), interfacial defects, and limited stability in aqueous or complex media. Supramolecular macrocycles-particularly pillar[n]arenes (PAs), cucurbit[n]urils (CBs), calixarenes (CAs), cyclodextrins (CDs), and supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs)-offer a useful design space because their cavities, pre-organized scaffolds, and reversible non-covalent interactions can confine chromophores, tune local donor/acceptor ratios, and modulate Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). This Review systematically examines the unique structural advantages and assembly mechanisms of the five macrocyclic families, with an emphasis on their use in constructing ALHSs-from single-step to cascaded FRET-and in advancing aqueous photocatalysis, near-infrared bioimaging, panchromatic fluorescence modulation, and singlet oxygen generation. The resulting structure-property-application framework is intended to guide the rational design of macrocycle-assisted photofunctional materials while avoiding overextension of the photosynthesis analogy.

Safe and Stable Germline Transmission of MSTN Mutations in Cattle.

With the global population expected to reach 10 billion by 2050, sustainable livestock production is critical. Gene editing of the myostatin (MSTN) gene represents a promising strategy to enhance muscle growth in cattle. In this study, MSTN-mutated founder (F0) cows were used to generate F1 offspring via ovum pick-up, in vitro fertilization, and embryo transfer. Four F1 calves were born, all confirmed to be heterozygous for the MSTN mutation. Long-term monitoring showed normal growth and no visible health abnormalities. Whole-genome sequencing identified SNPs, INDELs, and structural variants, most with minimal predicted functional effects. Proteomic profiling of Longissimus dorsi muscle quantified 2947 proteins, revealing only subtle expression differences between MSTN-mutated and wild-type cattle. These results demonstrate stable inheritance and confirm that MSTN editing does not disrupt genome integrity or protein expression. Overall, our findings support the safety and utility of MSTN gene editing to improve livestock productivity for future food security.

From fear to empowerment: the impact of employees AI awareness on workplace well-being - a new insight from the JD-R model.

PURPOSE: The primary purpose of the study was to explore the impact of health workers' awareness of artificial intelligence (AI) on their workplace well-being, addressing a critical gap in the literature. By examining this relationship through the lens of the Job demands-resources (JD-R) model, the study aimed to provide insights into how health workers' perceptions of AI integration in their jobs and careers could influence their informal learning behaviour and, consequently, their overall well-being in the workplace. The study's findings could inform strategies for supporting healthcare workers during technological transformations. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The study employed a quantitative research design using a survey methodology to collect data from 420 health workers across 10 hospitals in Ghana that have adopted AI technologies. The study was analysed using OLS and structural equation modelling. FINDINGS: The study findings revealed that health workers' AI awareness positively impacts their informal learning behaviour at the workplace. Again, informal learning behaviour positively impacts health workers' workplace well-being. Moreover, informal learning behaviour mediates the relationship between health workers' AI awareness and workplace wellbeing. Furthermore, employee learning orientation was found to strengthen the effect of AI awareness on informal learning behaviour. RESEARCH LIMITATIONS/IMPLICATIONS: While the study provides valuable insights, it is important to acknowledge its limitations. The study was conducted in a specific context (Ghanaian hospitals adopting AI), which may limit the generalizability of the findings to other healthcare settings or industries. Self-reported data from the questionnaires may be subject to response biases, and the study did not account for potential confounding factors that could influence the relationships between the variables. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: The study offers practical implications for healthcare organizations navigating the digital transformation era. By understanding the positive impact of health workers' AI awareness on their informal learning behaviour and well-being, organizations can prioritize initiatives that foster a learning-oriented culture and provide opportunities for informal learning. This could include implementing mentorship programs, encouraging knowledge-sharing among employees and offering training and development resources to help workers adapt to AI-driven changes. Additionally, the findings highlight the importance of promoting employee learning orientation, which can enhance the effectiveness of such initiatives. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The study contributes to the existing literature by addressing a relatively unexplored area - the impact of AI awareness on healthcare workers' well-being. While previous research has focused on the potential job displacement effects of AI, this study takes a unique perspective by examining how health workers' perceptions of AI integration can shape their informal learning behaviour and, subsequently, their workplace well-being. By drawing on the JD-R model and incorporating employee learning orientation as a moderator, the study offers a novel theoretical framework for understanding the implications of AI adoption in healthcare organizations.

Association Between Ticagrelor and Glucose Homeostasis Regulation: Insights from Genetic and Transcriptomic Analyses.

Emerging evidence has demonstrated the additional therapeutic benefits of ticagrelor in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients with diabetes. However, the underlying mechanisms of this association remain elusive. Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis using genome-wide association study (GWAS) data on ticagrelor, plasma proteomics and type 2 diabetes was employed to identify causal mediator proteins. RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) of ticagrelor-treated HepG2 cells revealed the molecular pathways regulating glucose metabolism. Genetically proxied ticagrelor was significantly associated with a reduced risk of diabetes (OR = 0.859, 95% CI: 0.783-0.934, P = 7.98E-05), and 24.41% of this effect was mediated by upregulation of BDH2 protein. In vitro experiments confirmed the enhanced effect of ticagrelor on glucose consumption. Transcriptome analysis revealed that mitochondrial respiratory chain transfer and oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) were significantly enriched, and genes related to ATP biosynthesis were significantly upregulated. These findings highlight the non-platelet function of ticagrelor in maintaining glucose homeostasis, providing insights into potential drug repurposing in the future.

Digital health interventions for diabetes management in the eastern mediterranean region: A systematic review of types and effectiveness.

AIM: The aim of this study was to systematically review and evaluate the types and effectiveness of digital health interventions used for diabetes management in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMRO). METHODS: This systematic review, conducted according to PRISMA guidelines, searched PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus up to May 2025 to identify studies on digital interventions for diabetes management in EMRO countries. Methodological quality of the included studies was evaluated using the EPHPP tool, and findings were categorized by intervention type, outcome measures, and intervention effectiveness. RESULTS: A total of 46 studies were included, mainly from Iran and Saudi Arabia. Phone calls and SMS were the most common digital tools. Digital interventions significantly improved HbA1c, fasting blood sugar, and several behavioral outcomes such as physical activity, medication adherence, and self-efficacy, while effects on psychological outcomes were mixed. CONCLUSION: Digital health interventions, especially phone calls and SMS, effectively improve glycemic control and self-care behaviors, though their impact on psychological outcomes remains inconsistent.
