Use of wearable technologies for physical activity promotion in older adults: A systematic review.

This systematic review, conducted according to PRISMA guidelines and registered in PROSPERO (CRD420251055299), examined the use of wearable technologies for promoting physical activity (PA) in adults aged 60 years and older. Searches across five databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL, Cochrane) identified 2438 records, of which only six randomized controlled trials published between 2021 and 2025 met inclusion criteria, with sample sizes ranging from 36 to 551 participants and mean ages between 65 and 79 years. Given the small number of included studies, findings should be interpreted as preliminary. The studies ranged from the standalone use of commercial trackers (Fitbit, Polar, ActiGraph) to multicomponent interventions combining wearables with physiotherapist feedback, telephone counseling, web-based platforms, or interactive cognitive-motor training. Wearables used alone, as in the REACT trial, produced small or non-significant PA effects. In contrast, interventions integrating devices with personalized feedback, professional support, or digital platforms, such as PROMOTE and TASMANIA, were associated with more consistent improvements in PA, physical function, and cognitive outcomes. Multicomponent programs, such as PEER and ICMT, reported broader benefits, including cognition, balance, and reductions in sedentary behavior, though these findings derive from individual trials and require replication. Risk of bias, assessed with the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool version 2 (RoB 2.0), was rated as "some concerns" for five studies and low for only one, mainly due to gaps in randomization reporting, missing data, and lack of preregistration. Tentatively, and based on a very limited evidence base, wearables may have greater impact when embedded within broader behavioral systems, incorporating feedback, coaching, or interactive components, rather than when used in isolation as passive monitoring tools. Adherence and psychosocial outcomes appeared related to comfort and perceived usefulness among older adults, though larger and more robust trials are needed to confirm these patterns.

Uric Acid-to-HDL Cholesterol Ratio is Associated with Hepatic Steatosis but Not Fibrosis in Nonobese Adults: A NHANES 2017-2020 Study.

BACKGROUND: Although metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) has traditionally been regarded as a disease closely related to obesity, its prevalence is gradually rising in nonobese populations. The uric acid-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (UHR) is a novel metabolic biomarker that has been shown to be associated with MASLD. However, its role in nonobese individuals remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association between UHR and nonobese MASLD. METHODS: Data from the 2017 to 2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were analyzed. UHR was calculated as the serum uric acid (UA) divided by the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL). Liver steatosis (using controlled attenuation parameters, CAP) and fibrosis (using liver stiffness measurement, LSM) were evaluated through vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE). Multivariate linear regression was employed to evaluate associations. Nonlinear relationships were examined using smoothed curve fitting. RESULTS: This analysis included 3573 participants (47.41% male; aged 20-80 years). Log2-UHR was positively associated with CAP (β = 9.96, 95% CI: 6.93-12.98, P < 0.001) and MASLD prevalence (OR = 1.64, 95% CI: 1.38-1.95, P < 0.001). Subgroup analyses revealed significant interactions by sex, age, ethnicity, and smoking status (all P for interaction < 0.05), with stronger associations in females, adults aged 40-59 years, individuals of other Hispanic ethnicity, and never-smokers. Moreover, the association between log2-UHR and CAP was linear and positive (P < 0.01). No significant association was found between log2-UHR and LSM (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: UHR is independently associated with hepatic steatosis but not fibrosis in nonobese US adults, suggesting its potential utility as an early risk assessment to tool. Large scale prospective studies are needed in the future to further validate the conclusions of this study.

Probiotic supplementation increases fecal TLR4 agonists without improving disease activity in juvenile idiopathic arthritis: a randomized placebo-controlled trial.

Gut dysbiosis has been implicated in the pathogenesis of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), suggesting that microbiota-targeted interventions may influence immune signalling during early immune development. We conducted the PERMAJI multicentre randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to evaluate the effects of probiotic supplementation (VSL#3) on host-microbiota immune interactions and disease activity in children with oligoarticular or RF-negative polyarticular JIA. Participants were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive VSL#3 or placebo for 3 months in addition to standard therapy. Stool and serum samples collected at baseline and month 3 were used to assess gut microbiota composition, fecal innate immune agonists, intestinal permeability, and systemic cytokines. The primary clinical endpoint was the proportion achieving an ACR Pedi 30 response at 3 months. Forty-four children were enrolled between September 2017 and July 2022. Clinical responses did not differ between groups (ACR Pedi 30: 47% with VSL#3 vs 63% with placebo; p = 0.33), and conservative worst-case assumptions for missing data suggested lower response rates with VSL#3 (36% vs 68%; p = 0.03). Probiotic supplementation significantly increased fecal Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) agonist activity, whereas gut microbiota diversity, intestinal permeability, and systemic cytokine levels remained unchanged. These findings indicate that probiotic supplementation can modify microbial innate immune signalling without detectable changes in microbial community diversity and may increase exposure to pro-inflammatory microbial stimuli in early-life autoimmune disease. The results highlight the complexity of host-microbiota immune interactions and underscore the need for careful evaluation of microbiome-targeted therapies in paediatric autoimmune disorders.

The impact of supernormal lung function on mortality risk in adults with and without sleep-disordered breathing.

BACKGROUND: In the general population, supernormal lung function is associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality. RESEARCH QUESTION: It remains unclear whether sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) affects this relationship. METHODS: This cohort analysis included 4,839 adults. Lung function was categorised as supernormal (FEV1 > ULN), normal (LLN ≤ FEV1 ≤ ULN), and below normal (FEV1 < LLN). SDB severity was classified using apnoea-hypopnoea index categories: no SDB (<5 events/hour), mild SDB (5-<15 events/hour), moderate SDB (15-<30 events/hour), and severe SDB (≥30 events/hour). The association between lung function and all-cause mortality was assessed using Cox proportional hazards models with subgroup analyses according to SDB severity and formal testing for interaction. Analyses were repeated using FVC-defined lung function groups as an alternative definition of supernormal lung function. RESULTS: Among the included participants, 4,068 (84.1%) had normal lung function, 369 (7.6%) had supernormal lung function, and 402 (8.3%) had below normal lung function. During 52 421.5 person-years of follow-up (median 11.72 years; IQR, 10.46-12.56), 1,188 deaths occurred. Compared with the normal lung function group, the supernormal lung function group had a lower prevalence of baseline hypertension and cardiovascular disease. The association between lung function and all-cause mortality varied across SDB severity strata (P for interaction = 0.034). A lower mortality risk associated with supernormal lung function was observed in participants without SDB (HR: 0.24, 95% CI: 0.06-0.97), whereas this association was not statistically significant in the mild, moderate, or severe SDB strata. Below normal lung function was generally associated with an increased all-cause mortality risk. Sensitivity analyses using FVC-defined lung function groups yielded broadly consistent findings. CONCLUSION: Supernormal lung function was associated with lower all-cause mortality primarily among individuals without SDB. These findings underscore the importance of considering SDB severity when assessing the health implications of lung function.

Efficacy and Safety of iGlarLixi Versus IDegAsp by Baseline Age, Disease Duration and HbA1c in Chinese People With Type 2 Diabetes: Post Hoc Analyses of the Soli-D Study.

AIMS: To compare the efficacy and safety of insulin glargine 100 U/mL plus lixisenatide (iGlarLixi) with insulin degludec plus insulin aspart (IDegAsp) by baseline age, Type 2 diabetes (T2D) duration and glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) in the Soli-D study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In Soli-D, Chinese adults with T2D suboptimally controlled on oral antidiabetic drugs (OADs) were randomized to iGlarLixi or IDegAsp for 24 weeks. These post hoc analyses evaluated glycaemic efficacy, insulin dose, body weight and hypoglycaemia outcomes in subgroups defined by baseline age (< 65, ≥ 65 years), T2D duration (< 10, ≥ 10 years) and HbA1c (≥ 7% to ≤ 8% [≥ 53 to ≤ 64 mmol/mol], > 8% to ≤ 9% [> 64 to ≤ 75 mmol/mol], > 9% [> 75 mmol/mol]). RESULTS: Among 582 participants (iGlarLixi n = 291; IDegAsp n = 291), baseline age was < 65 years in 442 and ≥ 65 years in 140; T2D duration was < 10 years in 366 and ≥ 10 years in 216; and HbA1c was ≥ 7% to ≤ 8% in 205, > 8% to ≤ 9% in 209 and > 9% in 168. At Week 24, HbA1c reductions were greater with iGlarLixi versus IDegAsp, with no treatment-by-subgroup interactions for baseline age, T2D duration or HbA1c. Change in other glycaemic outcomes, insulin dose and body weight generally showed no interaction across subgroups. Total insulin daily doses during treatment and hypoglycaemia event rates were consistently lower with iGlarLixi versus IDegAsp in all subgroups. CONCLUSIONS: iGlarLixi provides improved glycaemic control at lower insulin doses with reduced risk of hypoglycaemia in Chinese adults with suboptimally controlled T2D on OADs, regardless of baseline age, disease duration or HbA1c.

Effects of an internet-based combined exercise and cognitive-behavioral therapy intervention on endocannabinoid system biomarkers and physical fitness in adults with mild-to-moderate depression: a SONRIE randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: This SONRIE randomized controlled trial (NCT05849792) examined the effects of a 12-week combined physical exercise and internet-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (iCBT) intervention on endocannabinoid system (ES) biomarkers and physical fitness in adults with mild-to-moderate depression. METHODS: Eighty adults were randomly assigned 1:1 to an intervention (IG) or control (CG) group. Outcomes included nine ES biomarkers (2-arachidonoylglycerol, 2-AG; anandamide, AEA; seven analogues) and physical fitness, including cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF; 6-minute walking test) and muscular strength. Measurements were taken at baseline, post-intervention and 8-week follow-up. Primary analysis performed 2 × 3 repeated-measures ANOVA on completers; mixed-effects intention-to-treat model as sensitivity analysis. RESULTS: No significant time × group interaction was detected for any ES biomarker, including 2-AG (F(2,88) = 0.17, p = 0.844) and AEA (F(2,88) = 1.20, p = 0.306); both groups showed comparable within-group decreases in 2-AG, 2-LG and 2-OG. The intervention significantly improved CRF [between-group difference + 81.6 m at 12 weeks (F(2,78) = 7.88, p = 0.001)], exceeding the established minimal clinically important difference. None of the exploratory muscular fitness outcomes reached statistical significance; the arm curl test showed a borderline non-significant interaction (F(2,78) = 2.83, p = 0.065). CONCLUSION: A 12-week internet-based combined exercise and iCBT intervention significantly improved CRF in adults with mild-to-moderate depression. We did not find evidence of an intervention-specific effect on plasma ES biomarkers. These findings support the inclusion of internet-delivered exercise and psychological interventions in comprehensive treatment strategies for depression. Association of the Charlson Comorbidity Index With 1-Year Outcomes in Patients With Macular Edema Secondary to Retinal Vein Occlusion.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the predictive value of the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) for outcomes in patients with macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion (RVO). DESIGN: Retrospective clinical cohort study. SUBJECTS: Patients seen between 2013 and 2023 at the Cole Eye Institute, Cleveland Clinic, were included. All patients were >18, diagnosed with RVO (International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-9 and 10 codes), had a complete CCI score, and had at least 1 year of ophthalmic follow-up data after their first intravitreal injection (baseline). Patients with ocular surgery, trauma, or panretinal photocoagulation were excluded. METHODS: Age-adjusted CCI scores were calculated for each patient from chart review. For patients with bilateral RVO, one eye was selected randomly. Patients were stratified into tertiles by CCI distribution: tertile 1 (CCI 0-5; mean 3.4), tertile 2 (age-CCI 4.1-6; mean 4.9), and tertile 3 (CCI ≥ 8; mean 9.6). Multivariable linear regression was performed to determine the predictive value of CCI and other covariates on visual and anatomical outcomes. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and central subfield thickness (CST) at 1-year follow-up. RESULTS: A total of 972 patients met all criteria, with an average age-adjusted CCI score of 6.2. Each one-point increase in CCI predicted 0.38 fewer letters in BCVA at follow-up (P < .001). Baseline BCVA was a significant predictor of follow-up BCVA in all tertiles (P < .001). In the third tertile, each one-point increase in CCI was associated with a 0.72 letter reduction in follow-up BCVA (P < .001). For CST, baseline CST was strongly predictive of final CST (P < .001), while CCI was only significant in the first tertile, where each point increase in CCI predicted a 13.7 µm increase in CST (P = .02). In RVO subtype interaction models, the age-adjusted CCI × CRVO interaction was not statistically significant for either 1-year BCVA (P = .269) or 1-year CST (P = .695). CONCLUSIONS: Higher CCI scores are significantly associated with worse visual outcomes in patients with RVO, particularly in the combined population and most comorbid patients (tertile 3). CCI was significantly associated with higher (thicker) CST only among the least comorbid patients (tertile 1).

Adding Rib Mobilization to Diaphragm Release Techniques in Patients With Non-Specific Neck Pain: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Non-specific neck pain (NSNP) is a frequent issue that can negatively affect both mobility and function. Recently, there has been growing interest in newer therapeutic approaches, including rib mobilization and diaphragm release techniques, as potential ways to address NSNP and support better outcomes for those affected. PURPOSE: To find out the immediate effects of how (DRT) combined with (RMT) affects the level of pain and the extent to which patients' functional abilities are improved in cases of NSNP. METHODS: For this prospective RCT, 96 participants aged 20 to 45 years were randomly assigned to one of three equal groups based on their pain score (VAS). Group B engaged in (DRT) for 40 minutes, three times weekly for 8 weeks, in contrast to Group A, which got both RMT combined with DRT. Group C (active control) received advice and some exercises. Measurements were collected before and after the intervention; the primary outcomes included pain severity, evaluated using a visual analog scale (VAS); active neck range of motion (ROM), measured with a cervical range of motion (CROM) device; and neck flexion endurance. Additionally, the secondary outcome of neck-related disability was assessed using the Neck Disability Index (NDI). RESULTS: No statistically significant difference was identified among the three groups at baseline; nevertheless, a treatment effect emerged after 8 weeks (p = 0.001 and f-value = 4.15, ƞ2 = 0.306). A statistically significant time-treatment interaction was seen when comparing the pre- and post-treatment periods in groups A and B (p = 0.001, f-value = 3.16, ƞ2 = 0.251). CONCLUSION: The addition of rib mobilization to diaphragm release techniques in patients with non-specific neck pain resulted in statistically significant improvements in pain intensity, cervical flexion, right lateral rotation, left lateral rotation, right rotation, and neck flexor endurance, with moderate to large effect sizes for pain reduction and cervical motion. However, no statistically significant differences were observed between groups for cervical extension, left rotation, or the Neck Disability Index (NDI), and only a marginal clinical improvement in NDI was noted in Group A. The observed benefits in the combined intervention group may not be attributable solely to rib mobilization. The increased treatment complexity and greater therapist interaction inherent in the combined approach could also have influenced the outcomes. Nurse-led attribution remodeling training based on the Neuman systems model to enhance resilience, adaptive coping, and attributional style in women newly diagnosed with breast cancer: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Psychological interventions for patients with breast cancer often overlook the critical role of maladaptive attributional style in shaping their adjustment. Therefore, the need for theory-driven, scalable interventions that target cognitive restructuring, particularly during the vulnerable post-diagnosis period, is clear. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of a nurse-led attribution remodeling training intervention grounded in the Neuman systems model for improving resilience, adaptive coping, and attributional style among women newly diagnosed with breast cancer. DESIGN: A randomized controlled trial. SETTING: A tertiary general hospital. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 130 eligible women newly diagnosed with breast cancer were recruited between March and November 2024. METHODS: A two-arm parallel-group randomized controlled trial was conducted. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either attribution remodeling training plus routine nursing (n = 65) or routine nursing only (n = 65). The nurse-led attribution remodeling training intervention, delivered via a blended model of in-person sessions and continued support through the WeChat mobile platform, was designed to systematically reshape maladaptive attributions into more adaptive ones. Resilience (primary indicator), coping strategy (i.e., confrontation, avoidance, resignation), and attributional style (secondary indicators) were assessed at baseline and at 1, 3, and 6 months post-baseline. A linear mixed model was used to analyze the effects of group, time, and group-by-time interactions. Effect sizes (Cohen's D) were calculated based on the means and standard deviations. RESULTS: At the 6-month follow-up, the intervention group had better outcomes than the control group in terms of resilience (mean difference: 1.49, 95% confidence interval: 0.37, 2.61), confrontation coping (3.35 [2.33, 4.37]), and adaptive attributional style (4.16 [3.87, 4.45]). Avoidance coping showed a small increase (0.82 [0.22, 1.42]), whereas resignation coping decreased (-1.66 [-2.49, -0.83]). Group effects and group-by-time interactions were statistically significant for all outcomes. Effect sizes at 6 months ranged from small for resilience (D = 0.28) and avoidance coping (D = 0.26) to moderate for confrontation coping (D = 0.60) and resignation coping reduction (D = -0.51), and large for attributional style (D = 0.94). CONCLUSIONS: Attribution remodeling training is a promising and effective theory-based intervention that can enhance psychological adaptation in women newly diagnosed with breast cancer. By strengthening key defense mechanisms, as conceptualized by the Neuman systems model, the program is effective, scalable, and nurse-deliverable for psycho-oncology care, bridging a critical gap in supportive cancer care and empowering nurses as primary psychological support providers. The science of Arabic coffee (Qahwa): from phytochemistry and nutritional profile to health benefits and safety evaluation.

Arabic coffee (Qahwa), a traditional beverage widely consumed in the Middle East, has attracted increasing scientific attention due to its distinctive phytochemical composition and associated health effects. This review provides an integrated analysis of Qahwa's nutritional profile, focusing on its key bioactive constituents, including chlorogenic acids, caffeine, diterpenes (cafestol and kahweol), and phenolic compounds. These constituents contribute to a range of biological activities, notably antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, and metabolic regulatory effects. The influence of technological variables, including roasting degree, brewing method, and bean origin, on the chemical composition and functional properties is critically examined. Safety concerns, particularly acrylamide formation and mycotoxin contamination, are also discussed. Although emerging data support Qahwa's potential as a functional beverage, further research is required to clarify dose-response relationships, synergistic interactions, and long-term health outcomes. This work highlights Qahwa as a promising candidate for food and nutraceutical applications, warranting standardized compositional profiling and toxicological evaluation.

The return of measles: a dangerous comeback.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Measles has reemerged as a significant global public health threat, with increasing morbidity and mortality associated with declining vaccination rates. This review summarizes current global outbreaks, history of measles, vaccination and elimination status, vaccine hesitancy, and outbreak response and lessons learned highlighting different novel digital epidemiological tools. RECENT FINDINGS: Measles continues to surge worldwide with an estimated 11 million infections in 2024, which is more than prepandemic levels. Developing and developed countries are both facing measles outbreaks, with the United States at risk of losing measles elimination status. Recent studies have showed that worldwide percentages of two-dose measles vaccination were lower than 95% that is required to interrupt measles transmission in all WHO regions. Novel epidemiological tools such as interactive simulators, real-time use of dynamic models, serosurveillance, and others are transforming measles outbreak response and enable earlier outbreak detection, tracking, and targeted public health interventions. SUMMARY: Vaccine hesitancy is one of the top global health threats and developing a tailored evidence-based approach is necessary to establish and maintain measles elimination.

Liver transcriptome analysis revealed multiple immune processes and lipid metabolism pathways involved in the defense response of the turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) against Aeromonas salmonicida.

Aeromonas salmonicida is a significant pathogen causing notable economic losses in Scophthalmus maximus aquaculture. This study utilized Illumina sequencing technology to examine the transcriptional response characteristics of S. maximus liver at 24 h following A. salmonicida infection. A total of 2363 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified when compared to the negative control group. The immunity-related Toll-like receptor signaling pathway, NOD-like receptor signaling pathway, as well as metabolism-related PPAR signaling pathway and insulin signaling pathway, were notably enriched. Significant differences exist in the expression of key genes within the PPAR pathway, particularly cd36, acsl4a, pparαa, and plin2, all of which mediate the interaction between lipid metabolism and the immune response. These results offer valuable insights into the immunometabolic regulatory mechanism of S. maximus response to A. salmonicida infection.

Construction of an infectious clone of Spodoptera frugiperda densovirus and its biological characteristics.

Densoviruses are highly pathogenic to their insect hosts and have great potential for biocontrol. Spodoptera frugiperda densovirus (SfDV) was isolated from diseased larvae of Spodoptera frugiperda, while its biological functions remain unclear. Herein, we successfully constructed an infectious clone of SfDV. The S. frugiperda larvae transfected with the infectious clone exhibited anorexia, stunted growth, and reduced activity. Histopathological analysis further showed that the epidermis, fat body and trachea were infected instead of muscle and midgut tissues. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that numerous virions of about 22 nm were distributed within both the nucleoplasm and cytoplasm of epidermal cells. Moreover, many virions were also found contained within vesicles in the cytoplasm. The replication kinetics of the rescued SfDV (rSfDV) was similar to that of the parental SfDV. The median lethal dose (LD50) and median lethal time (LT50) values of rSfDV were 6.63 × 107 viral genome copies (vgc), 5.23 d, respectively, which were also comparable to those of the parental SfDV. Taken together, the infectious clone of SfDV provides an important tool for further exploring the genome function, pathogenesis, and interactions with its hosts.

The interplay between circadian misalignment or sleep disturbances and cognition and brain function in individuals with different degrees of insulin resistance - a systematic review.

Disruption of sleep increases the risk of type 2 diabetes and worsens cognitive outcomes, yet few studies have evaluated the interaction between insulin resistance and sleep parameters in relation to cognitive outcomes or the risk of dementia. This systematic review examines how circadian misalignment and sleep disturbances affect cognition and neuroimaging findings in individuals with varying degrees of insulin resistance. Across 27 studies, disrupted circadian rhythmicity and sleep disturbances were negatively associated with brain health, possibly through its effects on insulin sensitivity, whereas the impact of sleep duration and quality were inconclusive. Methodological heterogeneity, reliance on cross-sectional designs, and limited control for confounders restricted definitive conclusions and highlighted the need for longitudinal and interventional studies with objective measurements. Nonetheless, the findings support circadian rhythmicity as a potentially modifiable risk factor for preserving cognition in insulin-resistant populations. Future research should prioritise prospective and interventional studies and focus on biological markers rather than self-reported outcomes.

Cationic porphyrin covalent organic framework reinforced hydroxypropyl methylcellulose films for photodynamic-photothermal sterilization and food preservation.

Microbial contamination in food necessitates effective antimicrobial packaging. While cellulose-based packaging materials suffer from limited antimicrobial efficacy, lack of active functionality, and susceptibility to inducing microbial resistance. To address these challenges, this study synthesized a cationic porphyrin-based covalent organic framework (Por-ICOF) as a multimodal photosensitizer. Por-ICOF was uniformly dispersed via non-covalent interaction within hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), creating an HPMC/Por-ICOF composite film. This integration enhanced mechanical strength (increased by 26%), hydrophobicity (WCA 71°), and gas barrier properties (OP reduced by 42%, WVP reduced by 36%). Under visible light, the HPMC/Por ICOF film superior absorption generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) and photothermal effects, inactivating 99.2% of Escherichia coli and 99.95% of Staphylococcus aureus within 20 min. The composite film exhibited excellent biocompatibility and effectively extended the shelf life of strawberries. This cationic modification strategy for cellulose-based films offers a novel avenue for the design of high-performance antimicrobial food packaging materials.

Self-healing materials for food packaging: Design principles, activation mechanisms and implications for food safety.

Self-healing materials (SHMs), originally developed to restore mechanical integrity, have recently attracted growing interest in food packaging. By autonomously repairing physical damage, SHMs help preserve packaging integrity, barrier performance, food safety, and shelf-life during storage and transportation. This review summarizes recent advances in the design principles, activation mechanisms, material systems and food packaging applications of SHMs. Key healing strategies, including microencapsulation, dynamic covalent bond exchange, reversible non-covalent interactions and responsiveness to external stimuli such as temperature, pH, and humidity, are discussed. Representative material systems, including biopolymer-based films, hydrogels, nanocomposites, and stimuli-responsive polymers are evaluated with respect to their relevance to packaging animal-derived foods, fruits, and vegetables. Performance evaluation methods, sustainability implications, and food-contact safety concerns are addressed. Despite promising healing efficiency and mechanical resilience, challenges remain regarding production cost, food-grade safety, migration risks, trigger compatibility and stability under fluctuating environmental conditions. Future research should focus on scalable manufacturing, standardized evaluation protocols, repeated damage-healing safety assessment, regulatory compliance, and integration with intelligent packaging technologies.

Association between hepatic steatosis index and female infertility: a cross-sectional study using NHANES 2013-2018.

Female infertility is a major reproductive health concern. Hepatic steatosis index (HSI), a non-invasive marker of liver-related metabolic burden, has not been well studied in relation to infertility across its distribution. We analyzed women aged 20-49 years from three NHANES cycles (2013-2018). HSI was examined as both a continuous variable and in quartiles, and restricted cubic spline models were used to assess potential nonlinearity. Sensitivity analyses using alternative infertility definitions and exploratory interaction analyses were also performed. Among 3,007 women, 416 (13.8%) were classified as having infertility. In the fully adjusted model, women in the highest HSI quartile had higher odds of infertility than those in the lowest quartile (OR 1.66, 95% CI 1.08-2.57; P = 0.031), with a significant trend across quartiles (P for trend = 0.010). Restricted cubic spline analysis showed a nonlinear association between HSI and infertility (P for overall association = 0.005), which was more evident at higher HSI levels. Higher HSI was associated with greater odds of infertility among reproductive-aged women.

Proteomic analysis of cisplatin-induced spermatogenesis defects in mice.

BACKGROUND: Cisplatin is a crucial chemotherapeutic agent used for treating various cancers; however, its excessive use can cause irreversible damage to the reproductive system, and the protein expression profile of cisplatin-induced testicular injury remains unclear. METHODS: Male C57BL/6 mice were treated with cisplatin at various doses, and testes were collected for histological, immunofluorescence, and proteomic analyses. Germ cell loss and apoptosis were assessed using H&E staining, TUNEL assays, and immunofluorescence for LIN28A, SYCP3, MVH, and CDK1. Label-free quantitative proteomics identified differentially expressed proteins, which were analyzed for functional enrichment and protein-protein interactions. RESULTS: We observed that cisplatin treatment led to smaller testes, reduced sperm count, and a significant decrease in the number of spermatocytes and spermatids in mice. Label-free quantitative proteomic analysis revealed that cisplatin significantly reduced the expression of cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (CDK1), a key spermatogenesis regulator, in the testes. Reduction in CDK1 expression is correlated with spermatogenic arrest, particularly in spermatocytes. CONCLUSION: These findings highlight the critical role of CDK1 in cisplatin-induced spermatogenic dysfunction and provide new insights into fertility preservation strategies for patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy.
