Quality assessment, prognostic factors, and biomarkers for brain tumor analysis: a comprehensive systematic review.

The brain tumors possess different causative factors and properties, making their diagnosis and treatment difficult. Growth of these cancers usually leads to compression of the adjacent nerves and obstruction of the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, thus leading to increase in intracranial pressure. This affects the working of brain in many ways; thus, the difficulty involved in its treatment. With the improvements in technology in neuroimaging, including Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI), Positron Emission Tomography (PET), and multiparametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging (mpMRI), the diagnosis process has become easy. The effectiveness of any form of therapy in such patients depends primarily on their prognosis. While it is a common practice that physicians determine the prognosis of the disease by considering the age of the patient, histological grade of the tumor, and resection status, now this method has become more comprehensive by adding molecular signature and genetic analyses to the list of criteria. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) allows a reliable molecular classification. It increases the level of risk stratification, facilitating the application of therapies tailored to individual patients. Thus, molecular oncology has greatly changed our views on brain tumors' pathology and prognosis while neoadjuvant treatments aim at increasing the survival rate. On the other hand, radiogenomics is a field of study that combines non-invasive imaging phenotypes and genomic information in order to find unique molecular signatures of tumors without collecting samples from tumors. Molecular biomarkers are absolutely essential in the diagnosis of cancer, treatment monitoring, and recurrence of cancer. Advances in liquid biopsy technology, particularly the methods for circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) and Extracellular Vesicle (EV) based analysis, have enabled the possibility of non-invasive monitoring of the progression of the tumors over time. This review highlights key studies and important scientific works about imaging technologies, biomarkers, and prognostic factors of malignant brain tumors.

Reliability of resting heart rate measurements in atrial fibrillation.

BACKGROUND: Heart rate (HR) control in atrial fibrillation (AF) is commonly guided by resting HR measurements, usually with 12‑lead ECG or in-office pulse palpation. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess the reliability of resting HR measurements in AF patients with long-term ambulatory ECG and activity monitoring. METHODS: We included patients who had recorded a full-disclosure ambulatory ECG with a mobile cardiac telemetry device equipped with an accelerometer (PocketECG, MEDICALgorithmics, Poland), with at least 95% AF. Resting HR samples (≤20 per individual/day) were collected as 10-s daytime (8 am to 8 pm) measurements after ≥10 min of rest. These samples were compared to each individual's mean daytime resting HR. RESULTS: In 832 patients (median age 77 (interquartile range (IQR) 69-83) years, 42% women) with a median registration duration of 13 days (IQR 7-22), the population mean daytime resting HR was 85 (±15) beats per minute (bpm). A single resting HR differed from the mean daytime resting HR by a mean of ±10.4% (IQR 3.6-14.4%). When the mean daytime resting HR was ≥110 bpm, 29% of resting HR samples were < 110 bpm, and when the mean daytime resting HR was 80-109 bpm,11% of samples were ≥ 110 bpm. Resting HR measurement variability decreased to 5.3% (IQR 1.9-7.5%) when four resting HR samples were averaged. CONCLUSION: In patients with AF, a single resting HR measurement often differs substantially from the mean daytime resting HR. When a precise measurement is clinically relevant, repeated resting HR sampling or ambulatory monitoring can address this measurement imprecision.

Zinc status following different bariatric procedures: systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated perioperative changes in serum zinc levels following different bariatric procedures and provided evidence-based recommendations for postoperative monitoring and supplementation. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science and CNKI were systematically searched from inception to July 2025. Eligible studies compared pre- and postoperative serum zinc levels in individuals with obesity undergoing bariatric surgery. Study quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS), and the certainty of evidence was graded using the GRADE approach. Pooled analyses were conducted with StataSE 17.0. RESULTS: Twelve studies including 2,529 participants were analysed, with overall quality rated as high. Compared with baseline, pooled standardized mean differences (SMDs) in serum zinc at 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years postoperatively were -0.12 (95% CI: -0.27 to 0.04, I2 = 57.9%, τ2 = 0.0265, p = 0.149), -0.36 (95% CI: -0.58 to -0.14, I2 = 82.2%, τ2 = 0.1043, p = 0.001), -0.35 (95% CI: -0.53 to -0.16, I2 = 81.9%, τ2 = 0.0769, p = 0.001), and -0.36 (95% CI: -0.95 to 0.24, I2 = 97.2%, τ2 = 0.3515, p = 0.240), respectively. Subgroup analysis showed no significant changes at 3 months across procedures. However, zinc levels significantly decreased at 6 and 12 months after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and mini-gastric bypass (MGB), but not after sleeve gastrectomy (SG). At 2 years, no significant reduction was observed in any group. The certainty of evidence for zinc changes was rated as moderate. CONCLUSION: Serum zinc levels decline significantly during the first postoperative year, particularly after RYGB and MGB, while SG shows minimal impact. Routine zinc monitoring and individualized supplementation are recommended within the first year after surgery to prevent deficiency-related complications. Dispositional optimism and open-label placebo responses in hair cortisol concentrations and psychological distress-A randomized controlled trial.

Open-label placebo (OLP) treatments show beneficial effects on various health-related outcomes, but studies investigating OLP effects on physiological measures remain scarce. This randomized controlled trial examined the effect of a 4-week OLP intervention on psychological distress and hair cortisol concentrations (HCC) in 202 healthy university students preparing for mandatory oral exams and whether dispositional optimism moderates the OLP effects. Participants were randomly assigned to an OLP or control group. Psychological distress was repeatedly assessed via negative affect, test anxiety, and subjective stress. HCC was measured before and within the intervention. Treatment expectations were additionally examined in interaction with optimism. Results show that OLPs significantly reduced psychological distress and HCC compared to the controls. Optimism moderated the OLP effect on HCC, with less optimistic individuals demonstrating the strongest reduction, independent of expectation. Optimism did not moderate OLP effects in psychological distress. However, the OLP effect on psychological distress depended on the three-way interaction of group, optimism, and expectation. The results suggest that OLPs alleviate the psychophysiological impact of a real-life stressor and indicate that optimism and expectation differently shape psychological and physiological OLP responses. These findings are discussed within the framework of the interactionist perspective.

Variability in β-human chorionic gonadotropin concentrations following evacuation of a hydatidiform mole pregnancy: A retrospective cohort study from Vietnam.

BackgroundGestational trophoblastic disease refers to a group of tumors defined by abnormal trophoblastic proliferation. This disease produces a distinct tumor marker, beta-human chorionic gonadotropin, which can be useful for diagnosis and follow-up. The objective of this study was to investigate the variations in serum beta-human chorionic gonadotropin levels after uterine evacuation as well and the progression of gestational trophoblastic neoplasia.Materials and methodsThis retrospective cohort study was conducted at Tu Du Hospital, Vietnam, between January 2019 and December 2020. All patients diagnosed with molar pregnancy were analyzed retrospectively based on serial serum beta-human chorionic gonadotropin levels following uterine evacuation. Post-evacuation outcomes, including relapsed molar pregnancy and gestational trophoblastic neoplasia, were also monitored.ResultsWe enrolled 560 patients with molar pregnancy, including 298 with complete hydatidiform mole and 262 with partial hydatidiform mole. Severe symptoms were more common in those with complete hydatidiform mole. Over the follow-up period, 97 cases of gestational trophoblastic neoplasia were noted. The data show that the median time to gestational trophoblastic neoplasia diagnosis was 8.75 ± 4.41 (4-26) weeks. In terms of variations in the serum beta-human chorionic gonadotropin levels, the generalized estimating equation model showed a faster decline in the complete hydatidiform mole group than in the partial hydatidiform mole group. Similarly, regression in serum beta-human chorionic gonadotropin levels was significantly more rapid in patients who progressed to gestational trophoblastic neoplasia than in those with relapsed molar pregnancy (-11,593 vs. -20,651.22 and -12,946.26 vs. -46,329.23 mUI/mL, p < 0.001).ConclusionsSurveillance of serum beta-human chorionic gonadotropin levels remains essential for gestational trophoblastic neoplasia monitoring in patients with molar pregnancy following surgical evacuation. The post-evacuation serum beta-human chorionic gonadotropin level regression curve helps distinguish gestational trophoblastic neoplasia from hydatidiform moles. Further evidence is required to strengthen these findings.

Post-exercise rehydration: a randomized cross-over trial comparing a 100% fruit juice, a glucose-based sports drink, and water.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies indicate that sports drinks may improve rehydration, compared to water, an effect likely achieved by manufacturing sports drinks to contain carbohydrates and sodium. However, there is a growing preference for natural products and a "food first" approach to sports nutrition. Fruit juices naturally contain similar concentrations of carbohydrates to sports drinks, but fruit juices may produce a more stable blood glucose profile. Fruit juices also naturally contain electrolytes, particularly potassium, but their potential as effective rehydration alternatives to sports drinks, which have higher sodium concentrations, is not well understood. This study compared the rehydration efficacy and glucose responses following consumption of a 100% fruit juice (Raw Hydrate®; FRU), a glucose-based sports drink (SPO), and water (WAT) after exercise-induced hypohydration. Importantly, rehydration beverages were matched for water volume, rather than total volume, to ensure that any potential differences in water balance were not due to unequal water volumes between trials, a limitation affecting previous rehydration research. METHODS: After familiarization, 17 adults (age: 28 ± 8  years; BMI: 23.8 ± 2.9 kg/m2) completed three trials in a randomized cross-over design. The participants cycled in the heat (~35°C) to induce ~2% body mass loss (BML), then rehydrated over a 1 h period in a laboratory (~21°C) with a water volume equivalent to 150% of BML from either FRU, SPO, or WAT. This was followed by an additional 4 h of seated rest (5 h rehydration period), when blood glucose was measured (0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.5, and 2 h after beverage consumption), and all urine produced was collected. RESULTS: During the 5 h rehydration period, there was no effect of trial on total urine volume (FRU: 1266 ± 403 mL, SPO: 1338 ± 361 mL, WAT: 1394 ± 360 mL; P = 0.156) or water retention (FRU: 42 ± 12%, SPO: 37 ± 10%, WAT: 35 ± 11%; P = 0.059). The blood glucose area under the curve differed by trial (P < 0.001), with all beverages significantly different from each other (FRU: 10.12 ± 0.72 mmol/L/2h, SPO: 12.48 ± 1.34 mmol/L/2h, WAT: 7.90 ± 0.47 mmol/L/2h; P < 0.003). CONCLUSION: Rehydration efficacy was similar between all beverages, but each elicited a distinct glycemic response. For sports drink consumers seeking a natural alternative or implementing a "food first" nutritional strategy, switching to a 100% fruit juice will not compromise rehydration effectiveness, but may elicit a lower blood glucose response. Although, it should be noted that an additional three participants were withdrawn from the study because of gastrointestinal issues after consuming the 100% fruit juice. This was likely a product of the present study's design, where a large volume of 100% fruit juice (average ~2,300 mL) was consumed in a short period of time (1 h). Whilst this is a commonly used study design to robustly assess the rehydration efficacy of different beverages, future studies should distribute fluid intake over a longer duration, in order to improve ecological validity and reduce the risk of gastrointestinal issues.

Spore-forming Clostridia as overlooked determinants of microbial risk in wastewater reuse systems.

Using treated municipal wastewater for crop irrigation is a key strategy to combat drought-induced water scarcity. However, current wastewater reclamation standards systematically underestimate risks from spore-forming pathogens. As highlighted in a recent minireview by A. Mrozinski, C. Le Maréchal, and E. Topp in Applied and Environmental Microbiology (92:e00173-26, 2026, https://doi.org/10.1128/aem.00173-26), Clostridioides difficile and Clostridium perfringens survive conventional disinfection, persist indefinitely in agricultural soils, and harbor critical antibiotic resistance genes. To safeguard the food supply and protect public health, regulatory frameworks must shift from relying solely on standard vegetative bacterial indicators and include monitoring resilient, spore-forming pathogens.

Effects of Vacuum Compression Therapy on Healing of Chronic Lower Limb Ulcers: A Randomised Controlled Study.

Chronic lower limb ulcers remain difficult to manage when unresponsive to conventional treatment. This study evaluated the clinical and physiological effects of vacuum compression therapy on wound healing and quality of life. Fifty patients with chronic lower limb ulcers were randomised to receive 12 sessions of vacuum compression therapy plus standard care or standard care alone over 4 weeks. Wound dimensions, exudate, pain intensity and quality of life were assessed at baseline and post-treatment. Estimated wound volume was calculated as length × width × depth. Tissue oxygenation was measured at the dorsum of the foot in the experimental group. The vacuum compression therapy group showed greater improvements in wound width, depth, volume and quality of life. Estimated wound volume decreased by 61% in the intervention group, whereas no statistically significant volume reduction was observed in controls. Local tissue oxygenation in the experimental group increased by 43%. Baseline wound size was associated with poorer quality of life. Vacuum compression therapy may enhance wound healing and quality of life in patients with chronic lower limb ulcers. Observed increases in local tissue oxygenation represent exploratory physiological findings within the treated cohort that warrant controlled comparative evaluation. Disentangling oscillatory and aperiodic neural activity in autism: A spectral parameterization analysis of neurofeedback intervention.

BACKGROUND: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by atypical neural oscillations and heterogeneous alterations in excitation/inhibition (E/I) balance, the directionality of which varies across individuals, neural circuits, and developmental stages. While Alpha-band neurofeedback (NFB) is a promising intervention, its underlying neurophysiological mechanisms remain unclear, partly due to the conflation of periodic and aperiodic signals in traditional EEG analysis. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial recruited 40 children with ASD, assigned to either an experimental group (Alpha-training NFB) or a no-feedback group. Resting-state EEG and behavioral assessments (SRS, ABC) were collected pre- and post-intervention. We employed spectral parameterization to decompose neural activity into aperiodic (1/f slope, offset) and periodic (periodic alpha power, center frequency) components. RESULTS: NFB training yielded significant behavioral improvements in social cognition and relating skills. Physiologically, the experimental group exhibited a significant steepening of the aperiodic slope (increased exponent), reflecting a reduction in neural noise and potential optimization of inhibitory modulation. Furthermore, we observed enhanced periodic alpha power and an acceleration of the alpha center frequency (ACF), indicative of improved neural efficiency and maturation. These physiological shifts in frontal and occipital regions were significantly correlated with improvements in behavioral scores. CONCLUSION: Alpha-training NFB was associated with improvements in caregiver-rated behavioral scores and modulated spectral features of resting-state EEG in children with ASD. These findings validate the utility of spectral parameterization markers in evaluating neuromodulatory interventions.

Combined Effects of Nicorandil and Enhanced External Counterpulsation on Coronary Microcirculation and Exercise Capacity in Patients With Coronary Slow Flow Phenomenon: A Randomized, Controlled, 3-Arm Trial.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the combined efficacy and safety of combined nicorandil and enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) therapy compared with respective monotherapies in patients with coronary slow flow phenomenon (CSFP). METHODS: In this prospective, randomized, 3-arm clinical trial, 309 patients with angiographically defined CSFP based on corrected TIMI frame count were assigned (1:1:1) to the Nicorandil group (N group, n = 103), the EECP group (E group, n = 103), or the Combined therapy group (N+E group, n = 103). The trial was prospectively registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT07534410). IMR and CFR were measured to characterize coronary microvascular physiological status and treatment response. The primary endpoint was corrected TFC at 6 months. Key secondary endpoints included invasive physiological indices (IMR and CFR), Seattle Angina Questionnaire scores, 6-minute walk test (6MWT) distance, peak oxygen uptake via cardiopulmonary exercise testing, and the 12-month rate of re-hospitalization due to recurrent angina. FINDINGS: At 6 months, the N+E group demonstrated superior improvement in coronary hemodynamics compared to the N and E monotherapy groups, with significantly lower TFC (30.4 ± 3.5 vs 38.2 ± 3.8 and 37.5 ± 4.0, respectively; P < 0.001) and IMR (21.2 ± 2.8 vs 28.4 ± 3.2 and 27.6 ± 3.5, respectively; P < 0.001). Clinical symptoms and functional capacity showed the most substantial gains in the N+E group, with significantly higher Seattle Angina Questionnaire angina frequency scores (87.5 ± 8.8) and 6MWT distances (506.8 ± 41.8 m) compared to monotherapy groups (all P < 0.001). Furthermore, peak oxygen uptake in the N+E group increased to 23.5 ± 2.6 mL/kg/min, significantly outperforming the N and E groups (P < 0.001). During the 12-month follow-up, the observed rate of re-hospitalization due to recurrent angina was lower in the N+E group (5.8%) than in the N group (17.5%, P = 0.017), although this clinical outcome should be interpreted cautiously because the trial was powered primarily for physiological endpoints. No significant differences were observed in the incidence of adverse reactions among the 3 groups (P = 0.954). IMPLICATIONS: For patients with CSFP, the combination of Nicorandil and EECP improved coronary microvascular function, anginal symptoms, and objective exercise tolerance more effectively than either active monotherapy. The lower observed rate of angina-related re-hospitalization suggests a potential clinical benefit, but this finding should be considered exploratory and requires confirmation in trials adequately powered for clinical outcomes.

Assessment of temporomandibular joint space changes after orthognathic surgery in skeletal malocclusion patients: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: To interpret postoperative changes in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) joint space dimensions and condylar position following orthognathic surgery in patients with skeletal malocclusions, and to determine whether reported alterations represent clinically meaningful displacement or physiological adaptive remodeling. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science, EBSCOhost, and Cochrane Library was performed to assess pre- and postoperative TMJ changes using three-dimensional imaging. Joint spaces including anterior (AJS), superior (SJS), and posterior (PJS) and condylar morphology were evaluated. Methodological quality was appraised using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) checklist. Due to methodological and clinical heterogeneity, findings were synthesized narratively with attention to malocclusion type and surgical movement. RESULTS: A total of 16 studies consisting 628 patients undergoing BSSO, Le Fort I osteotomy, vertical ramus osteotomy, or bimaxillary surgery were included. Most studies reported minor, adaptive postoperative changes in AJS, SJS, and PJS. Class II patients showed more consistent increases in AJS/SJS, whereas Class III patients demonstrated variable posterior or anterior remodelling depending on surgical movement. Volumetric analyses revealed region-specific adaptations without significant condylar displacement. Postoperative temporomandibular disorder symptoms were infrequent, and no consistent evidence supported detrimental TMJ effects attributable to surgery. CONCLUSION: Postoperative TMJ joint space changes after orthognathic surgery primarily represent physiological adaptive remodeling rather than pathological condylar displacement, with reported variability driven by malocclusion type, surgical movement, fixation method, and imaging protocol. Recognizing these predictable patterns is essential to prevent overinterpretation of postoperative imaging and to improve clinical assessment through standardized three-dimensional and long-term evaluation strategies.

Influence of ovarian maturity, age, and mating status on the antennal responses of wild and laboratory reared Xyleborus affinis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) to ethanol.

Xyleborus affinis Eichthoff is a neotropical ambrosia beetle that, in certain regions such as the United States and Mexico, has been associated with exotic phytopathogenic fungi causing extensive tree mortality. Although studies relating its olfactory response to volatile compounds and trapping systems have been published, factors such as the insect's physiological condition, which can affect its recognition or response to odors, have not been studied. Here, we evaluated the electroantennographic (EAG) response of wild and laboratory reared X. affinis females to 70% ethanol, a compound known to attract these insects. The experimental design was developed to consider and compare the following conditions: (i) females collected inside and outside host-galleries, (ii) sexual maturity (with mature and immature ovaries), (iii) age (0, 1, 3, and 5 d after emergence), and (iv) mating status (virgins and mated). Our results indicate that most of the wild females located outside the galleries were sexually mature but exhibited significantly lower EAG response than those inside the galleries. Regarding mating status, mated females exhibited significantly stronger antennal responses compared to virgins, whereas age did not affect antennal sensitivity. Finally, we provide images of the hitherto undescribed reproductive system of X. affinis females, a key element that enabled this investigation. The information generated offers a useful foundation for future studies aimed at understanding the physiological mechanisms and other critical factors related to sensory perception and reproductive condition. For example, factors that may influence the behavior and attraction of X. affinis females to host semiochemicals.

GATA2 deficiency: enhancer deregulation, immune surveillance failure, and clonal evolution.

Germline mutations in GATA2 cause a syndromic inborn error of immunity characterized by cytopenia, infections, immune dysregulation, and a marked predisposition to myelodysplastic syndrome and acute myeloid leukemia. Initially defined by the DCML phenotype-dendritic cell, monocyte, B- and NK-cell deficiency-GATA2 deficiency is now recognized as a disorder of global immune-hematopoietic homeostasis. Recent multi-omics and experimental models reveal enhancer-driven inflammatory rewiring, IRF8-dependent lineage imbalance, and premature hematopoietic aging. In parallel, adaptive immune defects, including impaired B- and T-cell development and function, contribute to defective immune surveillance. These alterations not only explain susceptibility to infection but also shape clonal evolution and malignant transformation. Clinically, improved risk stratification and transplant outcomes underscore the importance of early recognition and monitoring of immune dysfunction. GATA2 deficiency thus represents a paradigm linking immune dysregulation, inflammatory stress, and cancer predisposition.

Effects of a programmed reflexology therapy on sleep quality, insomnia, and fatigue among individuals with poor sleep quality: evidence for autonomic nervous system modulation.

Poor sleep quality is closely associated with autonomic dysregulation and increased risks of cardiovascular, metabolic, and mental disorders. Foot reflexology is a widely used complementary therapy; however, its physiological mechanisms and comparative efficacy remain insufficiently explored. This study aimed to compare the effects of manual reflexology treatment (MRT) and foot massage equipment (FEM) on autonomic nervous system function, sleep quality, insomnia severity, and fatigue in adults with poor sleep quality. Using a randomized crossover design, 32 participants with poor sleep quality received MRT and FEM interventions for 6 weeks each (once weekly, 30-40 min/session). Heart rate (HR), blood pressure, and heart rate variability (HRV; time- and frequency-domain indices) were assessed at weeks 1 and 6 before and after each intervention. Subjective outcomes included the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and Fatigue Assessment Scale (FAS). Following MRT, participants demonstrated significantly greater reductions in global PSQI scores and all PSQI components compared with FEM. MRT also resulted in larger improvements in insomnia severity and both mental and physical fatigue. In contrast, FEM primarily improved physical fatigue. Physiologically, MRT induced an immediate decrease in HR and significant increases in HRV time-domain indices (SDNN, RMSSD, pNN50), which were sustained after 6 weeks. Frequency-domain analysis further revealed reduced LF, increased HF, and a lower LF/HF ratio, indicating enhanced parasympathetic activity and cumulative autonomic modulation. In conclusion, programmed manual reflexology, delivered according to the TIDieR framework, is more effective than mechanical foot massage in improving autonomic balance, sleep quality, insomnia severity, and fatigue in individuals with poor sleep quality. These findings support MRT as a feasible and evidence-based non-pharmacological complementary intervention for sleep health promotion. Nurse-Led Home-Based Mobile Health Cardiac Rehabilitation Program for Patients With Chronic Heart Failure: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

This 12-week randomized controlled trial evaluated a nurse-led mHealth intervention for patients with chronic heart failure, conceptually informed by Riegel's middle-range theory of self-care of chronic illness. The program integrated wearable activity tracking with weekly nurse-led behavioral coaching, reflecting the core self-care processes of monitoring, maintenance, and management. Compared with usual care, the intervention significantly improved daily step count, 6-minute walk distance, metabolic equivalents, and left ventricular ejection fraction. Findings highlight the effectiveness of theory-informed, nurse-delivered mHealth strategies in enhancing physical activity and cardiopulmonary function, while underscoring the critical role of advanced practice nurses in home-based chronic disease management.

ZrO₂@C-based colorimetric/photothermal dual-mode immunosensor coupled with a novel monoclonal antibody for quantification of Aspergillus ochraceus biomass.

Aspergillus ochraceus contaminates agricultural products and produces nephrotoxic, carcinogenic ochratoxin A (OTA), posing severe food safety hazards. A dual-signal lateral flow immunochromatographic assay (dLFIA) based on ZrO₂@C nanoprobes was established for quantitative detection of A. ochraceus biomass. A novel monoclonal antibody (mAb 4B4) was prepared as the capture antibody to immobilize A. ochraceus mycelial lysate antigen on the test line, and a rabbit polyclonal antibody (pAb G2801) as the detection antibody to modify ZrO₂@C composites (synthesized via UiO-66 pyrolysis) into 200 nm colorimetric/photothermal nanoprobes. This dLFIA achieved limits of detection of 0.164 μg/mL (colorimetric) and 0.517 μg/mL (photothermal). This efficient and reliable method allows quantitative analysis of A. ochraceus biomass, which is suitable for routine monitoring of fungal contamination in agro-food matrices.

First Report of Fibromyxoma in a Greater Amberjack (Seriola dumerili) From Aquarium of Genoa.

In teleosts, mesenchymal tumours like fibromas are frequently observed, whereas their malignant counterparts, fibrosarcomas, occur only sporadically. In our study, an adult female greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) reared at the Aquarium of Genoa developed a slow-growing mass protruding from the ventral right side of the head. The tissue was firm and white greyish with localized cranial haemorrhaging on the external surface. Cut-section examination showed a homogeneous, dry, whitish and richly vascularized tissue layout. Tissue samples from the mass were stained with Masson's Trichrome, Alcian Blue-PAS (pH 2.5), and Toluidine blue for differential diagnosis. Microscopically, it was characterized by alternating collagenous spindle-cell septa and hypocellular metachromatic myxoid areas positive for acidic mucopolysaccharides and glycosaminoglycans. The absence of cellular atypia, mitotic activity and necrosis confirms the diagnosis of fibromyxoma. Documenting rare tumours in aquarium fish expands comparative pathology literature and highlights public aquaria as valuable research platforms for long-term health monitoring under controlled husbandry conditions.

Contrast Heat-Cold Versus Thermoneutral Showering in Trained Combat Sport Athletes: A Randomized Field Trial of Recovery Outcomes.

Contrast heat-cold showering is popular for recovery, but multisystem evidence and persistence after cessation remain unclear. To evaluate whether a 4-week post-training contrast heat-cold shower intervention produces an integrated recovery profile across four domains (autonomic, endocrine, perceptual, and microvascular) rather than testing a single isolated physiological pathway, across baseline (T0), post-intervention (T1), and 2-week wash-out (T2). Sixty combat-sport athletes were randomized to contrast showers (10 min alternating warm 38-40°C and cold 13-15°C) or an active thermoneutral-shower comparator (10 min, 32-34°C) after training for 4 weeks. Primary analyses were per-protocol (≥ 75% compliance; n = 57), with intention-to-treat sensitivity analyses. Outcomes were Total Quality Recovery (TQR), morning salivary cortisol (two mornings averaged), resting HRV, and post-occlusive reactive hyperemia (PORH). From T0 to T1, favorable between-group changes were observed for resting HR (ΔΔ -2.10 bpm, 95% CI -2.24 to -1.96; g -0.65; p < 0.001), lnRMSSD (ΔΔ 0.123 log units, 95% CI 0.108 to 0.137; g 0.74; p < 0.001), with similar T1 effects for RMSSD and SDNN, and TQR (ΔΔ 0.61 points, 95% CI 0.27 to 0.95; g 0.80; p < 0.001). These T1 autonomic and perceptual changes were not maintained at T2 (all T2-T0 ΔΔ p > 0.05). Cortisol and PORH-derived outcomes showed no statistically clear between-group differences at T1 or T2 (all p > 0.05). Compared with thermoneutral showering, 4 weeks of post-training contrast heat-cold showering produced short-term favorable between-group changes in autonomic regulation and perceived recovery, but not in morning cortisol or PORH-derived microvascular reactivity. These effects were not maintained after wash-out; therefore, causal attribution to the shower intervention alone and claims of persistent physiological adaptation should be made cautiously.
