Positive conversion of latent tuberculosis screening in patients with inflammatory bowel disease on antitumor necrosis factor alpha drugs: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients undergoing antitumor necrosis factor-alpha (anti-TNF) therapy are at increased risk of developing tuberculosis (TB), making screening before anti-TNF initiation mandatory. Repeated screening during treatment is not yet recommended because of a lack of studies to support this practice. We aimed to determine the proportion of patients who develop latent TB during anti-TNF therapy. We systematically searched studies from MEDLINE, Embase, and Lilacs, and performed a single-arm meta-analysis investigating the positive conversion rate in IBD patients under anti-TNF therapy with previous negative TB screening. We calculated the combined proportion with 95% confidence interval, using the random-effects model. A P value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant for subgroup differences. We included 13 studies from nine countries with 1153 patients. The overall positive conversion rate was 9.20%. Portugal had 18.01% of positive conversion, Spain 4.51%, and the USA 1.11%. Tests for subgroup differences were statistically significant for subgroup analysis by country and consistency of test used (performig same test as baseline). Subgroup analyses by continent, study design, or specific test (tuberculin skin test or interferon-gamma release assay) showed no statistical difference. Meta-regression analysis showed a significant positive association between positive conversion and TB incidence. In conclusion, IBD patients on anti-TNF therapy can have a positive conversion rate of 9.20%. Higher conversion rates were seen in European and Asian studies compared with those in the Americas (particularly the USA). TB prevention strategies should, therefore, be individualized and based on geographic location and risk factors.

Association of Baloxavir Treatment Timing with Serial Interval and Household Transmission of Influenza through a Likelihood-Based Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Baloxavir treatment is associated with reduced influenza transmission within households, and the serial interval varies by treatment status. However, it remains unclear how baloxavir-induced changes in the serial interval relate to household transmission. We aimed to quantify the model-based association between baloxavir treatment timing and the serial interval and household transmission risk. METHODS: We conducted a household survey of influenza cases in Japan between October 2018 and February 2019. We defined the likelihood-based model integrating the serial interval distribution by treatment status and the secondary attack rate (SAR) using individual-level data from index cases. Using this model, we estimated the reduction in the serial interval associated with baloxavir treatment. RESULTS: Compared with untreated index cases, baloxavir-treated cases were estimated to have a serial interval density reduced by 21.42% following treatment. Treatment within 24 hours was associated with a 0.1685 reduction in the area under the curve, with smaller reductions as treatment was delayed. Earlier treatment was associated with a shorter, more concentrated distribution, whereas treatment 72 hours after onset resembled untreated cases. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings highlight that baloxavir treatment is associated with a shorter serial interval and lower estimated secondary household transmission risk. We provide model-based estimates suggesting that earlier administration is associated with a greater reduction in serial interval density and estimated transmission risk, which may inform public health strategies for infection control.

Analysis of end-stage renal disease mediated by cuproptosis-related genes.

OBJECTIVE: The complex pathophysiological mechanism of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) has not been fully understood. Cuproptosis is a newly discovered type of programmed cell death. Therefore, this study attempts to clarify the relationship between cuproptosis-related genes (CRGs) and the phenotype of ESRD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The National Center for Biological Information Gene Expression Omnibus database was applied to obtain the GSE37171 dataset comprising whole-genome microarray analysis of peripheral blood samples. A 3 : 1 case-control design was employed with 75 ESRD patients and 20 healthy controls who were frequency-matched for age, sex, and ethnicity. Based on differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and genes related to cuproptosis, CRGs were identified. Thereafter, we explored two different subpopulations based on the cuproptosis gene and analyzed their expression and immune infiltration. Genes specific to the CRG cluster were identified through the weighted gene co-expression network analysis algorithm, and the best prediction model was determined and verified by four machine learning methods. RESULTS: The study identified 14 differentially expressed CRGs, among which ATP7B, SLC31A1, LIAS, LIPT1, DLD, MTF1, CDKN2A, DBT, and DLST had relatively high expression levels in the ESRD samples. Compared with the control group, expression levels of FDX1, DLAT, PDHA1, PDHB, and GLS were significantly lower in the ESRD group, and CRGs played a key role in the regulation of immune infiltration in ESRD. Two cuproptosis-related molecular clusters were identified in the ESRD samples. Cluster2 was more correlated with the immune infiltration of ESRD. By analyzing the intersection points between CRG cluster and key genes of ESRD, a total of 888 specific DEGs were identified. Functional differences related to specific DEGs were further explored using gene set variation analysis. Five significant genes (SMC5, USP47, USP53, AGA, and DMXL1) were identified by the support vector machine model as key predictors for ESRD disease risk, achieving an area under the curve (AUC) of 1.00 in internal validation. However, external validation in independent cohorts is required prior to clinical application. Individual gene analysis showed an AUC > 0.81 in discriminating ESRD patients from healthy controls, and the expression of all 5 genes in ESRD patients was significantly lower than in the control group. CONCLUSION: This study clarified the relationship between CRGs and the phenotype of ESRD, analyzed their specific roles in the immune microenvironment, and obtained a predictive model, providing new insights for the study of its potential therapeutic targets.

Design of an innovative framework based hybrid catalyst for simultaneous and sensitive monitoring of food additive and preservative of vanillin and nitrite in direct samples.

As vanillin (VAN) and nitrite (NIT) contamination in the food chain poses substantial threats to environmental and public health, rapid and portable detection is essential. The present study presents the first electrochemical sensor report based on a hybrid composite of Ni-TPA-MOF and MoS2/Co3O4. The oxidation of VAN and NIT exhibited sharp peaks and less over-potential on Ni-TPA-MOF/MoS2/Co3O4/GCE than on control electrode surfaces. On modified composite electrode surfaces, pH and scan rate were investigated for VAN and NIT. Further, the oxidation current exhibited high linearity at VAN and NIT concentrations of 5 nM-1000 μM and 3 nM-1250 μM, with detection limits of 0.102 nM and 0.073 nM (S/N = 3). We also applied anti-interfering ability (five/ten-fold excess of co-interfering compounds) and practical tests to various food-based real samples, with high recoveries of 98.85-102.41%. This study highlights the catalytic properties of Ni-TPA-MOF/MoS2/Co3O4 and demonstrates the sensor as a promising tool for food safety.

Systematic Review of Pharmacologic Treatment for Migraine Prevention in Adults: Report of the AAN Guidelines Subcommittee and the American Headache Society.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This systematic review (SR) provides updated evidence-based conclusions regarding the use of pharmacologic migraine prevention in adults to inform a new joint American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and American Headache Society practice guideline. METHODS: A multidisciplinary panel conducted an SR following the 2017 AAN Clinical Practice Guideline Process Manual. Randomized controlled trials evaluating pharmacologic preventive treatments for adults with episodic or chronic migraine were included. Searches encompassed MEDLINE, Embase, and ClinicalTrials.gov from database inception through June 6, 2024. Studies were screened in duplicate, with dual independent risk-of-bias assessment. Outcomes included change in monthly headache days, ≥50% responder rate, and validated patient-reported quality of life (QOL) measures. Raw mean differences, standardized mean differences, and risk ratios were calculated. A modified Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation process was used to classify certainty of evidence. RESULTS: A total of 217 studies met inclusion criteria. For episodic migraine, high-confidence evidence showed that galcanezumab and erenumab are more effective than placebo in reducing headache frequency. Moderate-confidence evidence supported benefit from atogepant, eptinezumab, fremanezumab, propranolol, topiramate, and valproate. Several additional oral agents including amitriptyline, bisoprolol, flunarizine, fluoxetine, levetiracetam, metoprolol, nifedipine, pizotifen, and telmisartan had low-confidence evidence suggesting possible benefit. For chronic migraine, high-confidence evidence supported reductions in headache frequency with fremanezumab, galcanezumab, and onabotulinumtoxinA. Moderate-confidence evidence supported benefit from atogepant, eptinezumab, erenumab, topiramate and valproate. Across both episodic and chronic migraine populations, erenumab, fremanezumab, galcanezumab, eptinezumab, rimegepant, atogepant, topiramate and onabotulinumtoxinA demonstrated improvements in patient-reported QOL outcomes on validated instruments. Evidence comparing active treatments was limited and generally of low or very low confidence, restricting conclusions about comparative effectiveness. DISCUSSION: This SR provides a comprehensive synthesis of evidence on pharmacologic migraine prevention in adults. High- and moderate-confidence findings confirm the efficacy of several established and newer preventive therapies and demonstrate improvements in patient-reported outcomes across multiple validated measures. These conclusions informed the development of evidence-based recommendations, presented in a companion publication, to guide clinicians in selecting preventive medications for adults with episodic and chronic migraine.

Non-destructive prediction of lead content in oilseed rape leaves by fluorescence hyperspectral technology based on neural network.

Based on fluorescence hyperspectral imaging (FHSI), this study targeted rapid, non-destructive quantification of lead (Pb) content in oilseed rape leaves treated with varying silicon (Si) concentrations, acquiring fluorescence spectra over the 484.43-1001.61 nm wavelength range. To optimize spectral data quality, preprocessing methods (Savitzky-Golay smoothing, first derivative, detrending) were comprehensively compared. Characteristic wavelengths were then selected via interval variable iterative shrinkage, which effectively compressed data dimensionality and reduced computational load. A hybrid SE-CL1DA model, fusing a 1D convolutional neural network, a long short-term memory network and SE attention mechanism was constructed, with Bayesian optimization tuning hyperparameters to boost stability. The BO-SE-CL1DA outperformed both traditional machine learning and insufficiently optimized deep learning model (Rp2=0.9609, RMSE = 0.0377 mg/kg, RPD = 5.1736), thus enabling accurate Pb estimation, supporting Si-regulated heavy metal stress management and facilitating agricultural contamination monitoring.

Clinical performance of a giomer-based pit and fissure sealant with and without air-abrasion pretreatment: a 12-month randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Pit and fissure sealants are widely used for caries prevention; however, their long-term success depends largely on retention. Giomer-based sealants containing surface pre-reacted glass ionomer fillers offer bioactive properties, yet concerns remain regarding their bonding durability when applied with mild self-etch primers. This randomized clinical trial evaluated the effect of bioactive glass air-abrasion pretreatment on the retention and caries preventive efficacy of a giomer-based sealant in young adults over 12 months. METHODS: This parallel-arm randomized clinical trial included 96 participants, each contributing one eligible sound permanent molar (n = 48 per group). Participants were randomly allocated to either bioactive glass air-abrasion pretreatment followed by application of a giomer-based sealant (intervention group) or application of the same sealant without pretreatment (comparator group). Sealant retention and secondary caries incidence were evaluated at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months using Simonsen's criteria, and modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria, respectively. The primary outcome was sealant retention at 12 months, whereas secondary caries incidence was assessed as a secondary outcome. Intergroup comparisons were analyzed using the Chi-square test. Intragroup comparisons were analyzed using Cochran's Q test followed by multiple comparisons. Relative risk with 95% confidence intervals was calculated. Statistical significance was set at p ≤ 0.05. RESULTS: At 6 months, complete sealant retention was observed in 91.7% of teeth in the intervention group and 75.0% in the comparator group, with no statistically significant difference between groups (p = 0.068). At 12 months, complete sealant retention was significantly higher in the intervention group (87.5%) than in the comparator group (33.3%) (p < 0.0001). Teeth in the intervention group exhibited an 81.25% lower risk of sealant retention failure compared with the comparator group (RR = 0.1875; 95% CI: 0.0864-0.4069; p < 0.0001). No differences in secondary caries incidence were detected between groups during the 12-month follow-up period (p = 1.0000). CONCLUSIONS: Bioactive glass air-abrasion pretreatment significantly improved the retention of a giomer-based fissure sealant compared with sealant application without pretreatment. No differences in secondary caries incidence were detected between groups during the 12-month follow-up period. Incorporating mechanical surface conditioning prior to sealant placement may enhance sealant retention without compromising preventive efficacy. Flavoromics-based profiling reveals taste and aroma differences between infant formula and breast milk.

Flavor differences between infant formula (IF) and breast milk (BM) are considered a potential factor affecting infants' acceptance of IF. This experiment employs flavoromics combined with multivariate statistical analysis to systematically compare the flavor profiles of IF and BM. Electronic tongue analysis and amino acid correlation revealed that IF was characterised by pronounced saltiness and umami richness, whereas BM exhibited greater bitterness and astringency. Volatile compound profiling identified five key flavor constituents in IF, predominantly aldehydes such as hexanal and pentanal. In contrast, BM contained a broader array of compounds-including acids, aldehydes, and esters-resulting in a more complex flavor profile. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG)-based metabolic pathway annotation, together with fatty acid profiling, suggested that some volatiles may be associated with lipid oxidation, Maillard reaction and sulfur-containing amino acid degradation pathways, offering a theoretical basis for the targeted optimisation of IF flavor.

Umbilical Cord-Derived Cell-Based Interventions for Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia and Related Complications in Preterm Infants: A Bayesian Sparse-Data Meta-Analysis.

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a major complication of prematurity with limited disease-modifying therapies. We evaluated umbilical cord-derived cell-based interventions for BPD and related complications in preterm infants. This Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020-based systematic review and meta-analysis were registered in PROSPERO. PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, CNKI, and Wanfang were searched from inception to June 14, 2026. Comparative clinical studies of umbilical cord-derived cell-based interventions in preterm infants at risk of or diagnosed with BPD were included. Outcomes included BPD, BPD severity, death, persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN), patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), late-onset sepsis (LOS), and adverse events (AEs). Bayesian random-effects meta-analysis used a binomial-normal hierarchical model to estimate pooled odds ratios (ORs), 95% credible intervals (CrIs), prediction intervals, and heterogeneity. Twelve studies were included. Umbilical cord-derived cell-based interventions showed a possible protective effect on overall BPD (OR, 0.48; 95% CrI, 0.14-1.20). Stronger associations were observed for severe BPD (OR, 0.17; 95% CrI, 0.01-0.85), moderate or severe BPD (OR, 0.28; 95% CrI, 0.09-0.70), and ROP stage ≥3 (OR, 0.17; 95% CrI, 0.02-0.65). No conclusive benefit or harm was observed for death, PPHN, PDA, IVH, NEC, or LOS. No treatment-related serious AEs were identified. However, prediction intervals were generally wide, and the certainty of evidence was low to very low for most outcomes. Umbilical cord-derived cell-based interventions may reduce the risk of moderate or severe BPD in preterm infants, with an additional potential benefit for ROP stage ≥3. Current evidence remains limited, and larger randomized trials with standardized outcomes and long-term follow-up are needed.

Comparison of quality of life in children with posterior urethral valves, isolated hydronephrosis and minor urologic conditions.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the quality of life (QoL) and family impact scores of children with posterior urethral valves (PUV), isolated hydronephrosis (HN), and those with minor urologic conditions, referred to here as minor urologic controls (MUC). METHODS: From December 2022 to April 2025, the PedsQL Inventory and Family Impact Module (FIM) questionnaires were distributed to patients in dedicated PUV, HN, and community-based urology clinics. Higher scores indicate better QoL. Children ≥8 years self-completed the questionnaires, while parents served as proxies for younger children. PUV patients were compared to HN patients and MUC. RESULTS: A total of 331 patients were included (124 PUV, 101 HN, and 106 MUC). The median age differed across groups, with HN patients being the youngest (median: 7 months), followed by MUC patients (median: 36 months) and PUV patients (median: 79.5 months). Overall, PUV patients scored similarly to HN patients and MUC in QoL and FIM scores. When stratified by age, however, PUV patients <2 years old had lower median scores in total QoL, psychosocial, and family functioning domains compared to other groups. CONCLUSION: Overall, PUV was not associated with lower QoL or family impact scores compared to comparator groups in this tertiary-care cohort; however, lower scores were observed among younger children with PUV, likely reflecting parent-perceived burden early in the disease course. This highlights the importance of age-tailored support and close monitoring, particularly for younger children and families navigating early post-diagnosis care.

RR-interval-based atrial fibrillation detection and burden estimation: cross-dataset validation and calibration-aware probability analysis.

Objective.Atrial fibrillation (AF) burden has become an increasingly important endpoint in long-duration rhythm monitoring, but reliable burden estimation requires more than accurate AF detection alone. In particular, when burden is derived by aggregating predicted AF probabilities over time, probability calibration may directly affect burden validity under external dataset shift.Approach.This study developed an interpretable-interval feature model for AF detection and evaluated it using record-wise cross-validation on a development cohort and independent cross-dataset external validation on public Holter electrocardiographic databases. Window-level performance was assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC-AUC), area under the precision-recall curve (PR-AUC), Brier score, expected calibration error (ECE), and calibration intercept and calibration slope. Recording-level AF burden was estimated using both probability-based and hard-label aggregation and evaluated using mean absolute error (MAE) and agreement analyses.Main results. The model showed high discrimination in both development and external evaluation, with external ROC-AUC ofand PR-AUC of. However, external calibration deteriorated despite preserved ranking performance, with Brier score of, ECE(15) of, calibration intercept of, and calibration slope of. In the external cohort, probability-based burden estimation preserved strong association with reference burden but showed weaker raw agreement than hard-label aggregation, with MAE ofversus, consistent with systematic probability underprediction. Repeated external recalibration across record-level splits substantially improved probability quality and probability-based burden estimation. Median probability-burden MAE decreased fromwithout recalibration toafter Platt recalibration andafter isotonic recalibration, while median ECE(15) decreased fromtoand, respectively.Significance.These findings indicate that-interval-based AF detection maintained strong ranking performance in the tested external cohort, but probability calibration should be evaluated explicitly when predicted probabilities are aggregated into AF-burden estimates.

"It was good because they have a relationship with us": A qualitative study on low-threshold buprenorphine treatment at syringe services programs.

INTRODUCTION: Syringe service programs (SSPs) reach people who inject drugs with opioid use disorder (OUD) and are novel "low-threshold" venues to initiate buprenorphine treatment. The study investigated patients' experiences with SSP-initiated buprenorphine treatment, which could aid in improving buprenorphine treatment delivery at SSPs. METHODS: The study included 12 participants who completed qualitative exit interviews after a randomized controlled trial of buprenorphine treatment at SSPs. In the parent study, participants received buprenorphine treatment through an onsite model at an SSP or enhanced referral to a community health center based on the randomization sequence. Most participants started taking buprenorphine at home. Exit interviews included participants from both study arms, and the semi-structured interview guide focused on their experiences with clinicians, experiences initiating buprenorphine, prior experiences with OUD treatment, and perceptions about continuing buprenorphine treatment. Four researchers iteratively read, coded, and discussed each transcript, then they derived recurring themes using thematic analysis. RESULTS: Participants were mostly male, middle-aged, and 50% identified as Latino. Four main themes related to buprenorphine treatment initiation: 1) Onsite treatment facilitated buprenorphine prescription, but some participants also expressed a need for additional support; 2) Precipitated withdrawal complicated participants' buprenorphine initiation in both arms; 3) Participants largely experienced the SSPs as affirming and welcoming; and 4) Developing strong relationships with healthcare providers was critical to successful buprenorphine treatment initiation. CONCLUSIONS: The SSP-based model provided rapid access to buprenorphine prescriptions, but precipitated withdrawal was a common complication. Some participants desired additional support and guidance when they started taking buprenorphine at home. The findings point to a "low-threshold, high-touch" approach where participants receive expedited access to buprenorphine providers at SSPs but also additional support throughout the initiation process to avoid and/or manage precipitated withdrawal. Despite some challenges, SSP-based buprenorphine treatment was highly valued by study participants.

Effect of renin-angiotensin system inhibitors on survival in glioma patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of renin-angiotensin system inhibitors (RASIs) on the survival outcomes of glioma patients, determine whether using RASIs correlates with survival benefit, and provide evidence-based guidance for the clinical treatment. METHODS: Studies assessing the effects of using RASIs versus non-use in glioma patients were retrieved from the PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Embase databases from inception to April 17, 2024. The included studies reported hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for overall survival (OS) and/or progression-free survival (PFS), as well as the effect on brain edema and steroid dosing in patients. RESULTS: Seven articles involving 2660 patients were included in this study. Pooled results indicated there was no significant difference in OS (HR = 0.89, 95% CI 0.75-1.06, P = 0.204) or PFS (HR = 0.98, 95% CI 0.82-1.18, P = 0.847) between RASIs-treated patients and non-RASIs-treated patients. Sensitivity analysis identified the ACEIs-focused trial reported by Happold et al. as a major contributor to inter-study heterogeneity. Subgroup analyses revealed that in recurrent glioblastoma, pooled OS was significantly longer in RASIs-treated patients than non-RASIs-treated patients (HR = 0.70, 95% CI 0.54-0.92, P = 0.01). Similarly, compared with bevacizumab monotherapy, bevacizumab combined with RASIs significantly extended OS in glioblastoma patients (HR = 0.73, 95% CI 0.63-0.86, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The results revealed that treatment with RASIs may show a trend toward prolonged overall survival (OS) in patients with glioma. For patients with glioblastoma, RASI therapy could prolong OS in those with recurrent disease. Furthermore, compared with bevacizumab monotherapy, the combination of RASIs and bevacizumab was associated with improved OS in glioblastoma patients.

Improving Community-Based Care for Adolescents with ADHD: a Randomized Controlled Trial of Artificial Intelligence-Assisted Fidelity Supports.

Cognitive-behavioral treatments (CBTs) for adolescents with ADHD demonstrate promise of long-term effects on outcome. However, their implementation in routine care community clinics faces barriers that impact quantity, efficiency, and quality of delivery, as well as client outcomes. This study is a randomized controlled trial designed to evaluate the impact of an AI-assisted service delivery model on therapist implementation of Supporting Teens' Autonomy Daily (STAND), a CBT blended with Motivational Interviewing (MI) for adolescents with ADHD. Adolescents with ADHD (N = 51), who were clients at three community mental health agencies, received treatment from 23 therapists. There was randomization of adolescents and therapists to AI-assisted or standard implementation supports. In addition to standard supports (i.e., training, standard facilitation resources, technical assistance, case supervision), AI-assisted support package included digitized facilitation resources housed in a clinical dashboard (Care4), feedback on content fidelity, and AI-generated feedback on MI implementation quality. The AI-assisted group was associated with more efficient treatment delivery and lower number of appointments attended by the adolescent. There was also a significant decrement in MI quality over time in the AI-assisted group compared to the standard support group. Feedback in focus groups indicated that therapists perceived a task-oriented mindset to be associated with receipt of the AI-assisted support package, leading therapists to prioritize efficiency over relational aspects of therapy. Following the results of this trial, a future, larger RCT should examine the impact of the AI-assisted implementation model on mental health outcomes and cost savings to organizations, third party payers, and clients. Innovation-related perception as a key driver of alternative protein acceptance: evidence from an early-stage model for cultivated meat and algae-/microalgae-based alternative protein products in Italy.

Alternative proteins are increasingly considered part of the transition toward more sustainable food systems, yet their diffusion depends critically on consumer acceptance. This study investigates the early-stage acceptance of two alternative protein categories in Italy-cultivated meat and algae-/microalgae-based alternative protein products. Focusing on the first three phases of acceptance, the analysis examines how innovation-related perception (IRP) shapes consumer perceived value (CPV), consumer perceived risk (CPR), and subsequent affective (AFF), cognitive (COG), and conative (CON) responses. Data were collected through an online survey administered to 238 Italian respondents and analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). The results show that IRP is the main upstream driver of early-stage acceptance in both product domains: more favourable perceptions strongly increase perceived value and reduce perceived risk. In turn, CPV exerts a much stronger influence than CPR on both affective and cognitive attitudes. A tentative cross-model comparison suggests only a descriptive variation in the final transition toward conative acceptance: affective and cognitive responses were both significant in the two models, with a relatively larger affective coefficient for cultivated meat and more balanced coefficients for algae-/microalgae-based products. Overall, the findings support a process-based interpretation of alternative protein acceptance and highlight the central role of innovation-related perception in shaping early consumer responses. These results provide relevant implications for communication strategies, product positioning, and policy actions aimed at improving the acceptability of alternative proteins in food cultures characterised by strong culinary traditions.

Does Inquiry-Based Learning Improve Students' Critical Thinking? A Meta-Analysis Accounting for Control Group Variations.

BACKGROUND: Inquiry learning is widely recognized, through empirical studies, as an appropriate instruction in enhancing students' critical thinking, yet the results were varied across context. The previous meta-analysis did not include the control group variations as a potential moderator and the studies subject domain was limited only to science subjects. Consequently, it is difficult to generalize the effectiveness of IBL in enhancing critical thinking. This meta-analysis aims to investigate whether inquiry learning is effective in improving the students' critical thinking skills and examine the moderating roles of each study characteristic. Methods The literature search applying the PRISMA protocol 2020 was conducted by utilizing SCOPUS, ERIC, and DOAJ databases. A total of 57 studies from 51 articles, published from 2015 to 2025, were synthesized using a random-effects model with standardized mean difference (SMD). RESULTS: The analysis revealed that IBL has a large and significant effect on enhancing students' critical thinking (g = 1.336; 95% CI [1.061, 1.611]). However, substantial heterogeneity was observed (I 2 = 92.09%), suggesting variability across contexts. Moderator analyses revealed that the main moderator, control group variations, was statistically significant in moderating the effectiveness of IBL (Qm = 5.21; p = .022). in contrast, subject domain (Qm = 1.43; p = .698), education level (Qm = 1.11; p = .774), and country ( Q m = 3.33; p = .650), were insignificantly moderating the effectiveness of inquiry learning. CONCLUSIONS: The present meta-analysis highlighted that IBL is effective in improving students' critical thinking. However, the effectiveness of IBL was relative to the type of control group variations. Its effect on critical thinking was greater when compared with teacher-centered learning but smaller when compared with other student-centered learning.

A MIL-88@Ru-based molecularly imprinted electrochemiluminescence sensor for highly selective and sensitive detection of enrofloxacin residues in animal-derived foods.

Using a metal-organic framework (MOF) - supported Ru(bpy)32+ (MIL-88@Ru) composite luminescent material, this study innovatively adopted electropolymerization to fabricate a molecularly imprinted polymer-based electrochemiluminescent (MIP-ECL) sensor for enrofloxacin (ENR) detection in animal-derived foods. Systematic investigation of the ECL luminescence and ENR's quenching mechanism confirmed that the sensor integrates ECL's high sensitivity and MIP's high specificity, enabling rapid and accurate recognition of ENR. Experimental results show a good linear response in the range of 1 nmol/L-20 μmol/L (R2 = 0.99), a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.28 nmol/L, as well as excellent selectivity and stability. Recoveries of ENR in all investigated matrices ranged from 97.7% to 106.4%, confirming the reliability of the established method. This ECL-MIP coupling strategy provides a new technical approach and application references for the efficient detection of trace pollutants in food safety and environmental monitoring fields.

Feasibility of routine clinical liquid-based cytology for lung cancer compact panel testing.

BACKGROUND: The Lung Cancer Compact Panel (cPANEL) is a recently approved highly sensitive multiplex gene panel in Japan that supports both DNA- and RNA-based next-generation sequencing. Although cytological specimens are acceptable for cPANEL, unfixed cell pellets or dedicated preservation tubes are typically recommended. However, evidence remains limited regarding whether residual liquid-based cytology (LBC) cell suspensions prepared for routine cytological diagnosis can be used directly for cPANEL testing without dedicated molecular preservation or additional preanalytical processing. In this study, we evaluated the feasibility of applying LBC specimens that are widely used in contemporary clinical practice to cPANEL. METHODS: We analyzed DNA and RNA quality in 69 clinical LBC specimens. Among these, 51 specimens containing non-small cell lung cancer cells with previously determined driver alteration status were subjected to cPANEL testing to evaluate assay concordance with clinical companion diagnostic results. RESULTS: DNA integrity was generally well preserved (DNA Integrity Number [DIN]: 6.2 ± 1.5). In contrast, RNA integrity showed greater variability (DV200: 16.4 ± 12.1%). ThinPrep-fixed specimens demonstrated lower DIN and DV200 values compared with CytoRich Red-fixed specimens. Although all samples successfully passed the DNA-based cPANEL assay, six cases (11.8%) failed the RNA-based assay, with RNA yield being a major contributing factor. Among the 46 evaluable specimens, concordance was 95.7% and sensitivity was 92.3%, or 88.9% including RNA module failures as cPANEL-negative. CONCLUSIONS: With appropriate fixative selection and adequate cellularity, cPANEL using clinical LBC specimens may serve as a practical diagnostic platform. We demonstrated that routine LBC specimens can be directly applied to cPANEL without special preanalytical processing.
