A high jugular bulb and fossa has been observed in cases of bleeding complications in neur-otologic surgery, conductive and sensori-neural hearing loss, tinnitus and vertigo. Comparison of 311 skulls from the Oslo mediaeval material with data from other studies showed good agreement regarding the frequency of high fossae, dehiscences, and side and sex differences. The correlation (Pearson's r) of fossa size between the two sides, with the right as the independent variable, and also the correlation between foramen size and fossa depth was less than expected from descriptions in anatomical texts based on visual observations.
On the basis of various opinions expressed in the literature, "closed bite" is associated in particular with an impaired front-tooth relation. Applying Tonn's index, evaluation of the records (models and cephalograms) of 1,100 patients, however, yielded no evidence of changes in the width ratio of the front teeth with regard to Angle classes, growth type, axial inclination of the central upper incisors, interincisal angle, or overbite.
Repositioning osteotomies in a Le Fort I fashion can affect the position of the TMJ, which cannot be viewed directly during surgery. Using the computer-assisted navigation system SSN (Surgical Segment Navigator), the intraoperative position of the TMJ can be checked and unintentional malpositions can be detected. Positioning of the maxilla after Le Fort I osteotomy was carried out in a conventional fashion. Afterwards, the position of the maxilla was corrected in the same patients using the SSN. In this way, the precision of conventional and SSN-guided positioning of the maxilla and its effect on the TMJ has been compared.
