Influenza surveillance based on oligonculeotide mapping of RNA of H1N1 viruses prevalent in Japan, 1978-1979.

Influenza H1N1 viruses isolated in Japan in 1978-1979 were compared with A/USSR/92/77 and H1N1 viruses isolated in North and South America in 1978 by oligonucleotide mapping of viral RNA. At least four types of H1N1 viruses, distinguished by oligonucleotide pattern, were involved in influenza outbreaks during 1978-1979 in Japan. The first type was prevalent throughout the country from January to March 1978. The second and third types caused sporadic outbreaks during the 1978-1979 winter. The second type was closely related to an H1N1 strain of 1953, A/Omachi/1/53; the third type appeared to be reintroduced from outside of Japan. The fourth type was prevalent from January 1979 and persisted to September 1979. Its origin was a virus closely related to A/California/45/78 virus, which appeared in the United States in late 1978. The oligonucleotide pattern of A/California/45/78 viral RNA was markedly different from that of other 1977-1978 H1N1 viruses; the major change occurred in the polymerase and nucleoprotein genes.

Altered activity of bacteriorhodopsin in high concentrations of guanidine hydrochloride.

Bacteriorhodopsin from Halobacterium halobium was stable and active in high concentrations of guanidine hydrochloride. However the decay of the intermediate with absorption maximum at 407 nm and the uptake of protons from the medium were remarkably delayed. At alkaline pH values, all the molecules of bacteriohodopsin existed as the 407 nm intermediate in the light, and one proton per bacteriorhodopsin molecule was released.

A comparative study on the neurotoxicity of n-pentane, n-hexane, and n-heptane in the rat.

The neurotoxicity of n-pentane, n-hexane, and n-heptane have been studied in Wistar strain male rats after exposure to 3000 ppm of n-pentane, n-hexane, or n-heptane for 12 hours a day for 16 weeks. The nerve conduction velocity and the distal latency were measured before the beginning of the exposure and after exposure for four, eight, 12, and 16 weeks. The experiment showed that n-hexane disturbed the conduction velocity of the motor nerve and the mixed nerve and prolonged the distal latency in the rat's tail, but that n-pentane and n-heptane did not. The light and electron microscopic examination showed that the peripheral nerve, the neuromuscular junction, and the muscle fibre of the rats exposed to n-hexane were severely impaired, but those of the rats exposed to n-pentane or n-heptane showed no particular changes even after 16 weeks of exposure. These results show that n-hexane is far more toxic to the peripheral nerve of the rat than n-pentane or n-heptane. It is necessary to study the neurotoxicity of other petroleum hydrocarbons, since some reports suggest that petroleum solvents might possibly contain neurotoxic hydrocarbons other than n-hexane.

[Toxicity and dose-response (effect) relationship of n-hexane (author's transl)].

A large amount of n-hexane is being widely used in industry as a solvent or a component of the mixed solvents for extraction of vegetable oils, adhesives, paints, and for cleaning, etc. And, many cases of polyneuropathy due to n-hexane have been reported up to now. Recently, studies on the neurotoxicity and metabolism of n-hexane rapidly progressed in many countries. The present review covers clinical signs and symptoms, pathological changes, metabolism, dose-response (effect) in acute exposure, glue or thinner sniffers, workers, animal experiments. The joint effects and the maximal allowable concentration of n-hexane are also briefly discussed.

[Immunological analysis of hydatidiform mole and invasive mole (author's transl)].

Thirty-two cases of hydatidiform mole without endometrial invasion of chorial tissue and 17 of invasive mole were studied to ascertain whether these two diseases can be differentiated by various immune parameters. All of hydatidiform 11 of invasive mole were sampled at a state of "mole in utero" (pre-evacuation), but 6 of invasive mole were at a post-evacuation state, respectively. The results were summarized in the following items; 1. Serum total protein, especially albumin decreased with no significant difference in both groups. Globulin fractionation (alpha 1, alpha 2, beta, gamma-globulin) showed no characteristic changes. 2. A variation of immunoglobin (IgG, IgM, IgA) was similar in both. 3. Beta 1 C (a component of complement) increased in two groups, but no difference was revealed. 4. Leucocytosis was observed, but lymphocytosis was not detected in both groups. 5. Active E-RFC slightly increased, although total E-RFC and EAC-RFC were within normal range. But these findings were not statistically different in both. 6. In vitro lymphocyte-PHA-response was fairly depressed without a significant difference in two groups. 7. Suppressive effect of serum on lymphocyte-response was also slightly strengthened, but a difference in both was not significant. 8. The results of immune skin tests (PHA, PPD, SK-SD, Candida) could not be debated with liquid numbers studied.

[Clinical evaluation of cefoxitin against intractable bronchopulmonary infections. Patients not responding to other conventional antibiotics (author's transl)].

Cefoxitin was administered to a total of 17 patients with intractable bronchopulmonary infections who had failed to respond to other conventional antibiotics, and the following results were obtained. (1) The clinical response, except 1 patient classified as evaluation impossible, was excellent in 3 patients, good in 10 and fair in 3 with an efficacy rate of 81.3%. (2) An improvement rate of more than 70% was observed in the findings of body temperature, dyspnea, colour of sputum, WBC and CRP. (3) There was no subjective nor objective side effects attributable to cefoxitin. In view of the results stated above, we have concluded that cefoxitin is a useful antibiotic for the treatment of intractable bronchopulmonary infections.
