We have compared the NZB/B1NJ (/NJ) and NZB/B1Pt (/Pt) mouse substrains with respect to a number of immunological and biochemical polymorphisms. In agreement with earlier findings by other workers, we detected histocompatibility antigen difference(s) between the two substrains. Serological analysis indicated that /NJ and /Pt expressed the same allotypes of H-2, Thy-1 and Lyt-1 antigens, while they differed for the Lyt-2 antigen. Amongst 15 biochemical polymorphisms, which we assayed, /NJ and /Pt differed for four, namely Pep-3, Mup-1, Gpd-1 and Hbb. In addition, the two NZB substrains differed for the Hc marker (haemolytic complement).

The tissue distribution of lipid microspheres (LMs), drug carriers for targeting therapy of anti-inflammatory drugs, was morphologically studied by electron microscope. In areas of inflammation in rats and mice, LMs were taken up by macrophages and accumulated around endothelial cells of blood vessels, and were observed to penetrate to the outer layer of blood vessels. LMs were also observed in reticuloendothelial cells such as Kupffer cells and splenic macrophages. Furthermore, the uptake of LMs by polymorphonucleocytes (PMNs) in areas of inflammation was enhanced 2-3 fold when LMs were coated with homogeneous IgG. These findings are in agreement with the tissue distribution results previously reported by the authors in studies using radioisotope-labelled LMs. The present and previous reports indicate that LMs could be used as a novel drug carrier, similarly to liposomes, in a drug delivery system specific for areas of inflammation and reticuloendothelial systems.

High serum IgE rheumatoid factor (RF) levels (greater than 100 ng/ml) were found using solid phase sandwich ELISA in 11 of 20 patients with rheumatoid arthritis having significant extraarticular symptoms (rheumatoid vasculitis) and only in 23 of 142 usual rheumatoid patients without such symptoms (p less than 0.01). A significant influence of other classes of RF and non-RF IgE on the ELISA for IgE RF was not observed in sera with levels of IgE RF over 50 ng/ml. The levels of IgE RF were not closely correlated with those of other classes of RF and total IgE. This study suggests that IgE RF might be one of the factors necessary to produce extraarticular rheumatoid vasculitis.
1. Exposure of rats to a temperature of 1 degree C resulted in a temporary decline in respiratory quotient to a minimum on the 4th day of exposure, with subsequent recovery. 2. Metabolism stabilized after 4-6 days of cold exposure. 3. Body composition was determined for control rats and rats exposed to 2 or 23 degrees C for 2 weeks. 4. Animals kept at 2 degrees C had a lower fat content than other groups, with a higher iodine value. 5. Mineral content indicated that bone growth continued during cold exposure.
