Up to now, there has been no investigation documenting clearly the effectiveness of chemotherapy for Borrmann type 4 gastric cancer from a histopathological viewpoint. In this paper, we present a few representative cases of Borrmann type 4 gastric cancer in which microscopic examination revealed the therapeutic effectiveness (degradation of cancer cells) of neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Further, comparative studies will be needed to clarify the relationship between the assessed effectiveness of therapy by roentgenological and histopathological examination.

To improve the whole-cell pertussis vaccine we have studied the inactivation of the biological properties characteristic of Bordetella pertussis phase I bacteria, i.e. histamine-sensitizing, lymphocytosis-promoting and mouse protective activities, by treating a concentrated bacterial suspension with various concentrations of glutaraldehyde. Under the experimental conditions, treatment with 10 mM glutaraldehyde at 37 degrees C for 30 min resulted in a marked reduction of the toxic activities without grossly diminishing the protective potency. Further tests were performed on the stability of the protective potency, on the agglutinin production in mice, and on the freedom from abnormal toxicity in guinea-pigs.
Extensor tendon involvement in three Smith's and two Galeazzi's fractures are reported. In two cases of previous Smith's fracture, the extensor indicis proprius tendon had been entrapped and ruptured in one case, and in the other the extensor digitorum communis tendon of the index was pierced by the fragment. Both showed a severe tenodesis effect on the index finger and thumb. In a new case of Smith's fracture, long extensor tendons of the fingers and thumb had been trapped beneath a dorsally displaced third fragment making closed reduction impossible. In the two cases of Galeazzi's fracture; in one the extensor carpi ulnaris tendon was trapped between the dorsally displaced ulnar head and the avulsed styloid process and in the other, the extensor digiti minimi tendon was caught beneath the radial border of the dorsally dislocated ulnar head.
An experimental study investigated the vulnerability of peripheral nerves in the "double crush" situation. Canine sciatic nerves were studied by means of electrophysiologic and histologic examination. Compression was applied by the KEIO compression clamp, with compression force of 15 g (approximately, 27.6 mm Hg). An incomplete conduction block and mild axonal degeneration were induced by a single compression. However, a complete conduction block and severe axonal degeneration could be induced in half of the cases by the double compression. In these cases, the loss of nerve function after a double lesion was greater than the sum of the deficits after each separate lesion. A good therapeutic effect was obtained by removing all compression, but the effect was incomplete when either compression was retained. It is concluded that proximal compression of a nerve could lessen its ability to withstand further compression more distally.

Investigations were made in human on the metabolism of Futraful (FT) and UFT (combination of uracil and FT), both of which are anticancer agents of pyrimidine metabolism antagonist. As a result, it was demonstrated that from the metabolic view point, those drugs essentially have a tumor-selective toxicity. Next, the mechanism of the superior clinical anticancer effect of UFT, compared to FT, was investigated enzymatically, showing the inhibitory effect of uracil on the degradation of 5-fluorouracil generated from FT in the organs and tumor tissues. Discussions were also made for the further development of fluoropyrimidines.

In brief, the clinical course of patients with Borrmann type 4 gastric cancer is characterized by its marked tendency for peritoneal metastasis (P-factor). This paper dealt with the treatment of Borrmann type 4 gastric cancer from the viewpoint of the disease P-factor, and included the following topics; UFTM chemotherapy, pharmacokinetics of mitomycin C (i.v. vs i.p. use), case presentation, Port-A-catheter (implantable drug delivery system), suppression of collagen biosynthesis, prevention of the adverse effects of mitomycin C, neochemotherapy, and autopsy findings.
Transient acantholytic dermatosis (TAD) is a primary cutaneous disorder of unknown cause that was first described by Grover in 1970. The common eruptions of TAD are self-limited pruritic papules and papulovesicules distributed primarily on the trunk and extremities. We report a case of an erythematous plaque variant of this skin disorder.

By Southern hybridization using a genomic DNA fragment carrying a human IgE heavy chain constant region gene (C epsilon) as a probe, we analyzed the organization of human C epsilon genes and their flanking regions in 23 atopic dermatitis and 6 senile erythroderma patients with elevated serum IgE levels, and 6 atopic dermatitis patients with normal IgE levels. On Bam HI, Hind III, and Eco RI digestions, we detected three hybridizable fragments containing three human C epsilon genes, C epsilon 1, C epsilon 2, and C epsilon 3, respectively, in all leukocyte DNAs. These fragments were almost identical in size among patients and healthy donors. Pst I digestion generated a genetic polymorphism. We, however, could find no correlation between this polymorphism and the disorders. It was concluded that among the patients and healthy donors, there was no marked difference in the organization of the functional C epsilon gene and its flanking region containing a class switch region. Our conclusion cannot rule out the presence of genetic abnormalities of this region in some atopic dermatitis patients which are not resolvable by our method. In the course of this study, we found a novel C epsilon-like gene in placenta DNA which differs from the three C epsilon genes commonly present in normal human DNA.
