[A case report of ruptured thymic carcinoid].

A scarce case of a rupture of thymic carcinoid followed by hemothorax and mediastinal enlargement was reported. And the mechanism of rupture of thymic carcinoid was discussed comparing to 38 thymic carcinoid cases reported in Japan. A 61-year-old male who had been pointed out mediastinal tumor by chance in a chest X-ray developed a sudden onset of chest pain and dyspnea during an aortography in a hospital transferred to our center because the rupture of the tumor was suspected. Emergency median sternotomy revealed a rupture of a solid tumor with a lot of clot which originally located in the anterior mediastinum but perforated into the right pleural space. This may be the first report of the ruptured thymic carcinoid, so far as we know in Japan. Reviewing the reported cases, the tumor of carcinoid is generally large in size and poorly differentiated in histological study. In more than half of the cases, it is reported that intraparenchymal necrosis or hemorrhage is found. Therefore, it is considered that a thymic carcinoid is a tumor which may result in the rupture, and it should be emphasized that the rupture of the thymic carcinoid which require an emergency treatment is one of the severe complications of the tumor.

[Transfer of cefmenoxime to lung tissue and thoracic muscle in thoracic surgery].

Twenty patients who were performed pulmonary resection for the disease of the lung were administered 2 g of cefmenoxime (CMX) intravenously during the operation. The CMX levels in serum, lung tissue and thoracic muscle were measured by agar-well technique. The CMX levels in lung tissue and thoracic muscle were higher than the MIC80 of CMX for Klebsiella pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae and Streptococcus pneumoniae which were commonly as isolated causative organisms from the patients with pulmonary infection. These results indicate that CMX will be useful agent for the prevention and treatment of pulmonary infection.

Age-dependent inhibition of growth of mouse neuroblastoma cells by mouse brain extract.

In the developing mouse brain, inhibition of cell proliferation and cell death occur naturally. In order to study the factors which control growth and differentiation of neural cells, we added brain extract of mice of various ages to N-18 mouse neuroblastoma cell cultures. Brain extract from newborn mice inhibited N-18 cell growth and, at high concentrations, induced cell death. The colony-forming ability of N-18 cells was also inhibited by brain extract. This inhibitory effect of brain extract on the colony-forming ability increased with fetal age and became most significant at birth, then gradually decreased. Brain extract of 19-day embryos promoted the neurite outgrowth of N-18 cells at low concentrations, at which cell growth was not affected. On the other hand, brain extract of adult mice had no effect on the growth and morphology of cells at the same concentration.
