Localized amyloidosis of urethra. Report of two cases.

Two cases of localized urethral amyloidosis are reported. Data pertaining to 13 cases including our two cases are reviewed. The difficulty in preoperative differentiation of an amyloid tumor from a urethral malignancy is stressed. It is advisable to perform open or transurethral biopsy of the urethral tumor before deciding on radical surgery.

Metabolism of isoniazid and free hydrazine formation in isolated rat hepatocytes.

Isoniazid (INH) was incubated with isolated rat hepatocytes, and the amounts of acetyl-INH, monoacetylhydrazine, diacetylhydrazine and hydrazine formed were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Subsequent analyses of kinetic parameters of metabolic pathways and enzymological study of rat liver homogenate revealed that hydrazine was formed preferentially from INH, catalyzed by soluble hydrolytic enzymes.

Energy transfer in artificial membrane systems. Singlet-singlet energy transfer from alloxazines to isolloxazines in dipamitoyl phosphatidylcholine liposomes and dialkylammonium chloride vesicles.

The singlet-singlet energy transfer from alloxazines to isoalloxazines has been investigated in dialmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) liposomes and dioctadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (2C18NC) vesicles to clarify the role of the artificial membranes in the energy transfer phenomenon. The structures of the artificial membranes were divided into two types: the single-walled (sonicated DPPC) and the multi-compartment vesicles (unsonicated DPPC and sonicated 2C18NC). In the DPPC single-walled liposomes, the energy of the donor lost by quenching is efficiently transferred to the acceptor via the Förster-type dipoledipole interaction. In the case of multi-compartment liposomes of DPPC, the mean distance between donor and acceptor is so small because the external surface of a bilayer is in the vicinity of the internal surface of another bilayer. As a consequence, efficiencies both of energy transfer and of energy loss were greater than those in single-walled liposomes. The fluid property of the 2C18NC bilayer allowed the preferential collisional quenching. The marked reduction in the efficiencies of both energy transfer and energy loss were attributed to the elongation of donor-acceptor distances due to the increase of the size of liposome.

Localization of alkaline and acid phosphatases in healthy human adrenal cortex. Light and electron microscopic study.

Localization of alkaline and acid phosphatase activity was investigated in healthy human adrenal cortex by light and electron microscopy. The activity of both was found in the inner part of the adrenal cortex--mainly in the reticular zone. The reaction products of alkaline phosphatase were observed along the plasma membrane and those of acid phosphatase were observed mainly in the lysosomes and secretory vacuoles. The heavier deposit of phosphatase reaction products in the reticular zone may be explained by the fact that the reticular zone is most active in the steroidogenesis of glucocorticoid and adrenal androgen.

Foreign body stone of the ureter as a complication of acupuncture.

A case of spontaneous passage of a foreign body in the upper urinary tract is reported. Approximately 60 cases have been collected and reported in the world, 18 in Japan. Our case is, however, the first with spontaneous passage. As complications may occur if these foreign bodies are left behind, we advocate the surgical removal as treatment of choice.

Diphallia with a normal and a blind-ending urethra.

A 65-year-old male with incomplete double penis is reported. He has a duplicated glans on a single shaft. Both glans each have an urethra surrounded by a corpora spongiosum. The right urethra drained a normal bladder and the left urethra vanishes near the seminal colliculus.

Hydronephrosis in ACI/N rats.

Of 45 ACI/N rats 9 were found with renal agenesis and 2 with hydronephrosis. The hydronephrosis may have been due to faulty development of the mesonephric duct.

A case of insulin resistant diabetes with possible antibodies to insulin receptors.

A case of a 19-year-old, non-obese female with insulin resistant diabetes mellitus and polycystic ovary syndrome was reported. The maximal insulin requirement attained 360 units per day, but a satisfactory control of diabetes did not follow. The patient's serum contained not only anti-insulin antibodies, but also possible anti-insulin receptor antibodies which were demonstrated by the 125I-insulin binding test using insulin receptors derived from human placental plasma membrane. The insulin resistance in this case was assumed to be caused primarily by possible blocking antibodies to insulin receptors and partly by anti-insulin antibodies because of the following observations. First, high serum free insulin (165 microunits/ml) without hypoglycemia indicates the presence of insulin resistance due to other factors than antiinsulin antibodies. Second, the titer of 125I-insulin binding capacity of serum was not unusually higher than those seen in chronically insulin-treated diabetics. Third, immunologically heterospecies insulin (fish insulin) was also ineffective. The clinical features such as absence of ketoacidosis and association with polycystic ovary syndrome resemble those of an unique diabetic syndrome reported previously though acanthosis nigricans and endogenous hyperinsulinemia were not found in this case. Her insulin resistance remitted spontaneously and over the next 18 months' observation, her diabetes remained regulated without insulin therapy.

Vaginal stone in a male pseudohermaphrodite.

A rare case of vaginal stone in a male pseudohermaphrodite who had undergone plastic surgery for external genitalia 16 years ago is presented. It is recommended to remove the entire wall of vagina musculina at the time of plastic repair for hypospadias in a male pseudohermaphrodite.
