The aim of this progressive study is to clarify whether the pain-in-labour drugs Oxytocin and Prostaglandin E2 do have an influence on postpartum serumbilirubin concentrations of the neonates. Two groups of neonates in which labour was induced with Oxytocin or Prostaglandin E2 were compared with a control group without pain-in-labour stimulants. The three groups were comparable in respect of obstetrical anamnesis and risk factors. The serumbilirubin concentration of the neonates was controlled at very frequent intervals during the first 72 hours. In the three groups, no difference could be found in the serumbilirubin values during the 72 hours' duration of the study.
Ribonuclease activity in the serum of patients with histologically confirmed ovarian carcinoma is significantly higher than in serum of patients with benign tumors of the ovary and that of healthy controls. In 847 samples collected during a period of 20 months the course of the ribonuclease activity of 41 patients receiving cytostatic treatment was determined. The ovarian carcinoma of all 41 patients was histologically ascertained. Three typical examples are presented.

The levels of total human serum RNAase activity (HSRA) from 24 patients with ovarian cancer have been followed up for a period of over 5 months. The determinations of HSRA were carried out according to our assay system described earlier. Two representative patterns of the HSRA are presented, one from a patient with an ascertained remission of an ovarian carcinoma. Increasing HSRA values are concomitant with tumor progression while in remission the HSRA remains at normal rates. We have reported earlier that optimum HSRA depends on physiological concentrations of NaCl in the reaction mixture. However, NaCl can be replaced by KCl without a loss of activity. No correlation was detectable between increased HSRA and an excessive electrolyte content in serum. The mixtures of sera with various RNAase activities showed linear additivity. These findings suggest that an increased concentration of the RNAases normally present in human serum and/or additional RNAases are responsible for the increase of the HSRA.
Since 1971 premature labor has been treated with Fenoterol and Verapamil in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the University in Mannheim. In animal experiments as well as in the isolated fetal cardiac muscle elective myocardial necroses were observed following stimulation with beta-sympathomimetics. These lesions are prevented by additional application of Ca++-antagonists. Fenoterol and Verapamil are capable of passing through the placenta. To evaluate the question whether a possible cardiac lesion of the infant is caused by tocolysis, 31 newborns of mothers after tocolysis were compared to a group of 19 infants without tocolysis. At the first day of life as well as at the age of 2 and 4 weeks ECG was registered, and the serum electrolytes K+, Ca++ and Mg++ were determined. At day 1 and day 4 as well as during the 2nd and 5th week CK and CK-MB were measured, and during the 2nd week the size of heart was registered. We were unable to demonstrate pathological cardiac findings in newborns following tocolysis which were related to the preceding medication.
Two cases of perforation of the cecum following caesarean section are reviewed. Peritonitis, septic shock, and post-operative ileus are the most important causes of this life threatening complication. In addition, the operative technique is very important. The clinical signs are at first non-specific but the further course increases the likelyhood of the differential diagnosis of perforation of the Cecum. In the management, an early repeat laparotomy is important. The perforation is oversewn. Because of the possible renal and pulmonary complications post-operative intensive care is indicated.

13 parturient women were given morphine epidurally analgesia for the relief of pain during labour. Complete analgesia was obtained in one woman and satisfactory analgesia in 8 patients. The results were poor in three cases and one woman did not react at all. The method is characterized by a fast onset, adequate pain relief and does not affect the maternal or foetal cardio-respiratory system.
