Malondialdehyde, vitamin E, glutathione peroxidase and selenium were analysed in the blood of 96 male patients with arteriosclerotic obstructive disease in the region of the leg. Of these 32 patients additionally had manifestations of a coronary or cerebral arteriosclerosis. In the parameters mentioned no significant differences were found between patients with general arteriosclerosis and isolated arteriosclerosis of the leg. Patients with arteriosclerosis and hyperlipoproteinaemia revealed higher values of malondialdehyde than patients without hyperlipoproteinaemia. No correlations were found between malondialdehyde and total cholesterol, triglycerides, vitamin E, glutathione peroxidase as well as selenium.
The 6R-[(R)-2-[3-[5-pyrimidinyl]ureido]-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl) acetamido]-penicillanic acids (10), prepared by two synthetic routes, exhibit broad antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Their structure activity relationships are discussed. 6R-[(R)-2-[3-[2-(p-Aminosulfonyl)anilino-4-hydroxy-5-pyrimidinyl] ureido]-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)acetamido]-penicillanic acid, sodium salt (VX-VC 43, 10m), the most active compound, shows very low MIC (minimal inhibitory concentration) values against clinically important Gram-negative bacteria, primarily Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

The synthesis of a series of 7R-[(R)-2-[3-[5-pyrimidinyl]ureido]-2-(aryl)acetamido]-3-cephem-4- carboxylates is described. Variation of the substituents at the 3-position in the cephem nucleus, at the 2-position of the pyrimidine ring, and of the phenyl residue in the acyl side chain is carried out. Qualitative structure-activity relationships in this series are discussed. VX-VD 2, the most interesting compound, exhibits broad antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

In 22 customary fats for food (vegetable oils, sorts of margarine, animal fats) the composition of fatty acids was gas-chromatographically established. The following fats in food have high proportions of essential fatty acids and prostacyclin precursors, respectively, and thus favourable PS/quotients: 1. sunflower oils (C18:2 60 to 70%); 2. linseed oil (C18:3 62%); 3. soya oil (C18:2 53%; C18:3 7%); 4. Cama (C18:2 46%); 5. Marella (C18:2 48%); 6. Soma (C18:2 46%). These oils and fats, respectively, are at best suitable for the prevention and dietetic therapy of HLP and degenerative diseases of heart and circulation.
In the Leipzig longitudinal study performed from 1968 to 1980 in 383 test persons with healthy metabolism in 2-3--year time intervals gas-chromatographic analyses of the serum fatty acid pattern were carried out. The dependence upon age, sex, and body-weight the vasoprotective linoleic, linolenic and arachidonic acid increased and the vasoaggressive palmitinic and eicosatrienic acid decreased. Influences of age as well as the change of the feeding habits are causally discussed for this purpose.
Plethysmographic course controls in 15 male patients at the age between 70 and 76.5 years showed that the maximum of the collateral blood supply in arteriosclerosis in the femoral region is reached 1-2 years at the latest after vascular occlusion. The peak-flow-values measured confirm the possibility of efficient collaterals also at older age. When there is a bad early compensation of the artery occlusions, we intended to test in time, whether or not a percutaneous transluminal angioplasty or a local thrombolysis are possible. Furthermore, in 100 male patients with arteriosclerotic disturbances of the blood supply of the legs the plethysmographic measurement of the reactive blood supply showed that the internationally usual haemodynamic subdivision into degrees of severity also concerns the age group between 60 and 75 years. With progressing Fontaine-stage a decrease of the reactive blood supply (first-flow, peak-flow) and an increase of the peak-flow-time were found.
During examinations and after a three-month examination period the changes of the parameters of fat metabolism were investigated depending upon stress experience before examinations. Students with a distinct stress experience showed a higher total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol as well as a higher LDL/HDL-cholesterol quotient within a concrete examination. After the examination period in this group a higher LDL/HDL-cholesterol quotient and a lower HDL-cholesterol level was established in comparison to the group with an insignificant stress experience. A positive dependence on the initial value of the parameters of fat metabolism consists only in the group with distinct stress experience. According to these results also stress has an influence on the reactions of the fractions of cholesterol.
Obesity as well as hyperlipoproteinemia increase in old age. There are some differences between both diseases with regard to their activity as risk factors. Both diseases are caused by environmental phenomena as for instance overeating and immobility.
In 77 patients with primary hyperlipoproteinaemia of the types IIa, IIb and IV who for 8 months had been treated with a metabolic basic diet enriched by polyene fatty acid gas-chromatographic analyses of the fatty acid compound of the glycerophospholipids were carried out in four-month intervals. In all three types of hyperlipoproteinaemia in a different size and increase of poly-unsaturated and a decrease of saturated and mono-unsaturated fatty acid could be observed. A metabolic basic diet rich in polyene fatty acid has a favourable influence on atherogenic constellations of the fatty acids of the glycerophospholipids.

For the clinical practice methods of the determination of HDL-cholesterol made their way which are based on the precipitation of apolipoprotein-B-containing lipoproteins and a determination of cholesterol following. The expensive methods of the ultracentrifugation serve as reference methods. The most-spread precipitation techniques (heparin/MCl2, dextran sulphate/CaCl2 or MgCl2 photungstic acid/MgCl2) are comparatively observed with regard to their effectiveness, practicability and methodical and technical conditions (influence of the concentration of the precipitation reagents, pH-value, temperature, incubation and centrifugation conditions). Results of own investigations as well as data from literature are presented to the problem of the harmonization of the cholesterol determination with the precipitation technique. According to the opinion of the authors for the enzymatic determination of cholesterol by means of the CHOD-PAP-method the phosphotungstic acid precipitation well stood the test, whereas for the chemical determination of cholesterol after Liebermann-Burchard in manual or automatized works the precipitation by means of dextran sulphate/CaCl2 (40 g/l, 2.0 mol/l) is to be recommended. The superabundant precipitations with phosphotungstic acid and dextran sulphate/MgCl2 (20 g/l, 2.0 mol/l) achieve higher results in Liebermann-Burchard's reaction likely on account of interferences.
