Some observations on the Rohon-Beard cell perikaryon.

During the hatching period, the Rohon-Beard cells of Salmo gairdneri showed definite structural maturity of their perikarya, which is in contrast to the amphibian species investigated, where neuronal maturation of the Rohon-Beard cells is finished only in later -- posthatching -- developmental stages.

The distribution of acetylcholinesterase in the central nervous system of web-building spiders (Arachnida, Araneae).

The distribution and activity patterns of acetylcholinesterase in the central nervous system of araneid and agelenid spiders have been studied. Enzyme activity was limited to the neuropile mass. The araneid and agelenid species investigated exhibited largely similar acetylcholinesterase activity in different parts of the nervous system. Enzyme reactions were relatively less intense in the optic ganglia; the central body showed only weak to moderate reaction stainings.

Ecology of Staphylococcus aureus: characterization of strains from chicken.

The majority of S. aureus strains isolated from beak-swabs and pathological processes in chicken shows coagulation of human plasma (not of bovine plasma), crystal violet-type A, hemolysine-type A, formation of fibrinolysin, not formation of DNase and reactions with the experimental phage A1591. Because of the absence of DNase-formation and the reaction-specificity for phage A1591 we propose to designate these strains as host-specific variety gallinae of S. aureus. The strains from chicken are compared with strains of human, bovine, and ovine origin. An ecological study in a chicken farm has shown that S. aureus strains from chicken are not found in man and vice versa.

Oxidative enzymes in the sebaceous glands of the domestic cat.

The distribution and activities of several oxidative enzymes in various regions of the sebaceous glands of the domestic cat have been studied. The results obtained emphasize the outstanding importance of NADP-linked dehydrogenases for lipogenesis during sebum production. In particular, the reactions for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase were very strong. Among the NAD-linked dehydrogenases investigated, lactate dehydrogenase showed strong activity in the peripheral cells of the sebaceous gland. The reactions for cytochrome oxidase and succinate dehydrogenase were weaker.

Simultaneous regional myocardial blood flows by tritiated water and microspheres.

Regional myocardial blood flow (RMF) was measured simultaneously by use of labeled 8-mum microspheres and the constant-rate infusion of 3H2O in 22 open-chest dogs (Na pentobarbital anesthesia) under markedly different hemodynamic conditions. Following cardiac excision, three adjacent 80-mg tissue samples were taken from the subendocardial, mid-wall, and subepicardial layers of quadrantal left ventricular (LV) segments of the basal and midventricular cardiac slices, and from one segment of the apical slice, totaling 81 samples per LV. RMF was calculated by the microsphere reference-flow technique and by two 3H2O tissue-uptake models. Good agreement between techniques (r=0.9-0.96) was found in comparing flows to the myocardial layers. Using Kety's "single-mixer" model of 3H2O tissue uptake, fairly good agreement was found between techniques in the 80-mg tissue samples; the cofficient of variation from regression was 18.5% which improved markedly to 12.3% when the flow values for each technique were averaged in the three adjacent samples. Analysis of variance showed that flow to the various LV subdivisions (layer, segment, slice) of control animals was heterogeneous.

[Penicillamine-induced myasthenia in chronic rheumatoid arthritis (author's transl)].

A myasthenic reaction developed after an average latency of seven to eight months in 12 female patients (average age 51 years) treated with penicillamine for chronic rheumatoid arthritis. In most of them only the purely ocular form was noted, but generalisation of various degrees also occurred. When penicillamine had been discontinued the myasthenic signs were almost always fully reversible, recurring once again when treatment with penicillamine was started. In some instances a transitory symptomatic treatment with cholinesterase inhibitors was necessary. The occurrence of the myasthenic signs in these circumstances is probably similar to the anti-basal membrane nephropathy induced by penicillamine.

Hydrolytic enzymes in the sebaceous glands of the domestic cat.

The distribution and activities of some hydrolytic enzymes in various portions of the sebaceous glands of the domestic cat have been studeid. The results point to the outstanding importance of none-specific esterases and lipases for sebum production, which generally appears to be abundant in thickly-haired mammals. The activities of the lysosomal enzymes demonstrated were connected with autolytic processes during sebaceous gland cell differentiation. There was a strong aryl-sulphatase reaction in the sebum of the sebaceous gland excretory ducts.

The distribution of enzymes in the skin of the domestic pig.

On the basis of enzyme histochemical methods, the distribution and the activities of various enzymes in the skin of the domestic pig were investigated. The results are discussed in connection with the importance of the domestic pig as an experimental animal for dermatological research.

[Enzyme histochemical studies of the general body surface apocrine glands in the domestic cat].

With enzyme histochemical methods, the distribution and the activities of various oxidative and hydrolytic enzymes in the apocrine glands of the general body surface of the domestic cat were investigated. The results obtained support the view that these glands are clearly active in function. On the whole, however, the relatively weak enzyme activities in the secretory portion of the glands point to only unimportant secretion production rates.
