Oxidative enzymes in the urinary apparatus of several freshwater fishes.

The distribution and activities of several oxidative enzymes in the urinary apparatus of five freshwater fish species (river lamprey, lobe finned eel, Prussian carp, rainbow trout and three-spined stickleback) have been studied. Species were selected from three main taxonomic groups: Cyclostomata, Polypterini, Teleostei. Distinctly positive enzyme reactions were only found in the tubular elements of the kidney and the collecting duct-archinephric duct system, with the exception of the generally weak staining intensities of lactate dehydrogenase. The distal tubule normally showed strong to very strong reactions for most of the enzymes investigated. In the epithelial cells of the collecting tubule-collecting duct system, stronger reactions were observed for most of the mitochondrial-bound enzymes, especially succinate dehydrogenase and NADH-diaphorase. For these enzymes, the cells of the archinephric duct reacted strongly positive in Lampetra, Carassius and Gasterosteus. The enzyme patterns of various types of urinary tubules and ducts are compared with results of several morphological studies. In addition, the histochemical findings are discussed in relation to kidney function in different vertebrate groups.

Barrett-esophagus following total gastrectomy. A contribution to it's pathogenesis.

We have undertaken esophagoscopy 1/2 to 17 1/2 years after surgery in 20 patients with a total gastrectomy and an esophago-jejunal anastomosis. In 5 cases we found a complete columnar lining of the distal esophagus (Barrett-esophagus). 2 other cases showed a multilocular columnar epithelium. One case with a Barrett-esophagus had endoscopy before surgery, and it could be proved that the columnar lining developed after surgery. We suspect that it was the same in the remaining cases. All examined patients, except one, showed an erosive esophagitis of varying severity. These observations support the current view that the columnar lined esophagus is usually an acquired one. The pathogenesis is not completely clear, but reflux of digestive juices destroying the squamous epithelium and impairing healing is the condition for columnar lining. The observations on patients with total gastrectomy prove that it must not necessarily be gastric juice. The very urgent question of the origin of columnar lining cannot be answered at present.

[Functional and oncologic results after bronchial or blood vessel anastomosis in the resection therapy of bronchogenic carcinoma].

In treatment of bronchogenic carcinoma twelve selected patients had economical resections. To avoid a pneumonectomy, lobectomies or bilobectomies were associated twice with bronchial excision, 8 times with bronchial resection (sleeve resection) and twice with resection and anastomosis of pulmonary artery. Nine patients underwent clinical, radiologic and szintigraphic control. Except one case all patients showed good functional results. The anastomosed lobes were perfused and ventilated proportionally to the number of segments. The quality of life after partial pulmonary resections had deteriorated only to a small extent compared with the preoperative state. These results were emphasized by the only poor result which (after atelectasis of the anastomosed lung) corresponded functionally to a pneumonectomy. --The two cases of anastomosis of pulmonary artery showed a short survival. Both corresponded to a stage II of tumor classification. Of the other patients (all stage I) three are alive more than five years.

[Therapeutic considerations in maxillofacial neuralgia].

In the presence of idiopathic and neuralgiform pain in the trigeminal area, differential diagnosis will have to eliminate sinus disturbances, toothache, TMJ trouble and neuromuscular spasms derived thereof. Neuralgias unconnected to these causes are treated by electrobiological testing of the neurotoxins. Symptomatic immediate treatment was formerly done by enneural injection. Now, a special technique of auriculoacupuncture has been successful for some time.

An image analysing method for automated cytologic prescreening of cervix carcinoma and its prestages: demonstration and preliminary results.

The image analysing method for automated cytologic prescreening is founded on the evaluation of epithelial cell nuclei in regularly stained and prepared smears. The technical equipment consists of a fast scanning microscope and a software-oriented computer. The device is able to isolate all objects present in the visual fields. Clumps, artefacts, detritus and other disturbing objects are eliminated. Among the cell nuclei the nonepithelial forms (histiocytes, leukocytes, lymphocytes) are distinguished from the epithelial ones. The latter are compared with a representative sample of normal epithelial cell nuclei, exactly classified by cytologists. All objects are described by 18 mathematically defined parameters. The results of classification is a statistical information on the probability of coincidence of an unknown case with the normal object sample. In addition the evaluation program provides the number of automatic isolated cell nuclei. By these informations it is possible to differentiate between positive (tumor-suspicious), negative and inadequate smears.

[Experimental allergic chorioretinitis. Appearance and behavior of complement-fixing anti-ROS antibodies in the sera following immunization with retinal antigens (author's transl)].

The authors studied the appearance and behavior of complement-fixing anti-ROS antibodies in the sera of GrCh rabbits following one or two intracutaneous injections of retinal antigens emulsified in Freund's complete adjuvant (KFA). Fourteen different antigenic preparations from heterologous, homologous, and autologous retinal components incorporated in KFA were tested and compared. Apart from the supernatant of a centrifuged homogenized preparation of homologous retina, all immunogens generally induced anti-ROS antibodies. The antibody titers (reciprocal values) reached a maximum 4 to 8 weeks post injection, at only low levels. The changes in antibody concentrations showed some relationship to the quality and dose of the immunogens. Anamnestic effects following reinjection reached maximum values within as little as 5 to 14 days. Animals not developing chorioretinitic lesions showed higher antibody titers more frequently than rabbits with clinically confirmed disease. Provided there is sufficient relevance of the humoral reactions observed, the complement-fixing antibodies we found in our experiments are more likely to have protective than pathogenic functions.

The distribution of enzymes in the epidermis of the domestic cat.

With the help of enzyme histochemical methods, the distribution and activities of several oxidative and hydrolytic enzymes in the epidermis of the densely-haired domestic cat have been studied. Distinct oxidative enzyme activity could be demonstrated in all epidermal layers except the stratum corneum. Among the hydrolytic enzymes investigated, strong reactions for non-specific esterases were visible especially in the str. granulosum and the basal lamellae of the str. corneum. Positive reactions for cholinesterases could not be observed in the cat epidermis. The results are discussed in relation to corresponding investigations on the epidermis of sparsely-haired mammals, e.g. the domestic pig and man. Generally the enzyme pattern of the cat epidermis only shows limited parallels to man, especially where esterase distribution is concerned.

The distribution of acetylcholinesterase in the central nervous system of jumping spiders and wolf spiders (Arachnida, Araneida: Salticidae et Lycosidae).

The distribution and activity pattern of acetylcholinesterase in the central nervous system of salticid and lycosid spiders has been studied. Enzyme activity was limited to the neuropile mass. The salticid and lycosid species investigated showed different intensities of enzyme reactions in the protocerebrum. The differences observed may be related to the somewhat contrasting habits of these spider families. Reactions were strong especially in the optic ganglia (lamina glomerularis, corpora pedunculata) and in the cerebral ganglion, while the central body showed only weak to moderate activity. In the cheliceral ganglia, as in the pedipalpal and the leg ganglia, including the fibre tracts of the ventral cord the demonstration of acetylcholinesterase was of moderate to strong intensity.
