Cimetidine disposition was determined in six patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis to ascertain the need for modification of conventional dosing regimens. Blood, dialysis fluid, and urine were collected for 48 hours after administration of a single intravenous dose of cimetidine. The following values were obtained: elimination half-life, 4.3 hours; systemic or total body clearance, 191 +/- 55 ml/min; and dialysis clearance, 4.2 +/- 3.1 ml/min. Approximately 2% of a cimetidine dose is removed by dialysis, indicating that there is no need to adjust the conventional renal failure dosing regimen in patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis.
This investigation tested the hypotheses that (1) physical workstation dimensions are important determinants of operator posture, (2) specific workstation characteristics systematically affect worker posture, and (3) computer operators assume "neutral" upper limb postures while keying. Operator head, neck, and upper extremity posture and selected workstation dimensions and characteristics were measured among 379 computer users. Operator postures were measured with manual goniometers, workstation characteristics were evaluated by observation, and workstation dimensions by direct measurement. Considerably greater variability in all postures was observed than was expected from application of basic geometric principles to measured workstation dimensions. Few strong correlations were observed between worker posture and workstation physical dimensions; findings suggest that preference is given to keyboard placement with respect to the eyes (r = 0.60 for association between keyboard height and seated elbow height) compared with monitor placement with respect to the eyes (r = 0.18 for association between monitor height and seated eye height). Wrist extension was weakly correlated with keyboard height (r = -0.24) and virtually not at all with keyboard thickness (r = 0.07). Use of a wrist rest was associated with decreased wrist flexion (21.9 versus 25.1 degrees, p < 0.01). Participants who had easily adjustable chairs had essentially the same neck and upper limb postures as did those with nonadjustable chairs. Sixty-one percent of computer operators were observed in nonneutral shoulder postures and 41% in nonneutral wrist postures. Findings suggest that (1) workstation dimensions are not strong determinants of at least several neck and upper extremity postures among computer operators, (2) only some workstation characteristics affect posture, and (3) contrary to common recommendations, a large proportion of computer users do not work in so-called neutral postures.
The process of revising a nursing curriculum can be accompanied by self-oriented faculty behaviors such as inflexibility, indifference, and territoriality. The authors, who served as members of a curriculum revision task force, suggest the need for planned, intentional, and goal-directed approaches when revising an academic program. Lancaster's six components of research by committee are used as a framework to offer insights for enhancing.

Many nurses will be asked during their career to serve on a committee but will have little concept of the work and procedures involved. This article, the first of two parts, describes the work of the officers and members of a committee. The chairperson controls meetings according to rules which make for the smooth and equitable running of the committee. The secretary, who has to work closely with the chairperson, is often more experienced regarding the rules and can do valuable work in guiding the chairperson. Normally, the secretary's job includes duties before, during and after meetings. A treasurer looks after the financial affairs of any committee which holds a budget. The vice-chairperson is the natural successor of the chairperson and should be groomed to take the chair.
The first part of this article looked at the roles of the officers in a committee. This second part illustrates for nurses how committee meetings should be conducted. Rules govern the way meetings are announced and who may be present. The opening and closing of meetings need to be properly defined and conducted. Most committee meetings adopt the same agenda format. General conduct and the order of business are equally universal but latitude is exercised in less formal committees. Awareness of proper committee procedures makes it much more comfortable and satisfying to participate in meetings.

Vaccination of cynomolgus macaques with beta-propiolactone inactivated SIVmacBK28 in Freund's adjuvant induced low but detectable levels of anti-SIV envelope (env) antibodies and T-cell responses and protected against challenge with the 32H isolate of SIVmac251 grown in C8166 cells. In contrast, purified recombinant SIV env and gag proteins derived from BK28 formulated in Syntex adjuvant generated consistent and long-lived cellular and humoral immune responses to SIV env, but failed to protect against infection with the 32H virus. Thus, protection against a heterogeneous challenge stock is possible by immunization with a molecularly-cloned virus, but not with recombinant proteins from the same molecular origin. High levels of anti-cell antibodies induced by the whole virus vaccine, but not by recombinant proteins, may have contributed to the protection observed.
