Nitric oxide oxidation method for field calibration of nitrogen dioxide meters.

A simple procedure for field calibration of direct-reading NO2 meters is described. The method involves passing NO at a fixed concentration through an oxidizing reagent. The NO is oxidized to NO2, diluted with zero air and routed into the meter. Problems of working with potentially unstable cylinders of NO2 or field permeation systems are avoided. Both laboratory and field evaluations attest to the suitability of this method. Possible application as a confirmatory laboratory standard is suggested.

Dimensionality and the structure of student drug usage.

The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between political alienation and drug behavior using nonmetric techniques. A survey of undergraduate students was used to explore the dimensionality of drug attitudes and behavior. Through the use of smallest space analysis a dimensional structure of two dimension was derived from the data. Two space diagrams were constructed and examined as to the rank order of distances between alienation and drug behavior. The finding of the analysis indicates the validity of a nonmetric approach which focuses upon the rank order of alienation and drug usage.

Occupational safety and health implications of increased coal utilization.

An area of major concern in considering increased coal production and utilization is the health and safety of increased numbers of workers who mine, process, or utilize coal. Hazards related to mining activities in the past have been especially serious, resulting in many mine related accidental deaths, disabling injuries, and disability and death from chronic lung disease. Underground coal mines are clearly less safe than surface mines. Over one-third of currently employed underground miners experience chronic lung disease. Other stresses include noise and extremes of heat and cold. Newly emphasized technologies of the use of diesel powered mining equipment and the use of longwall mining techniques may be associated with serious health effects. Workers at coal-fired power plants are also potentially at risk of occupational diseases. Occupational safety and health aspects of coal mining are understood well enough today to justify implementing necessary and technically feasible and available control measures to minimize potential problems associated with increased coal production and use in the future. Increased emphasis on safety and health training for inexperienced coal miners expected to enter the work force is clearly needed. The recently enacted Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 will provide impetus for increased control over hazards in coal mining.

Pheochromocytoma presenting with pulmonary edema and hyperamylasemia.

A 28-year-old woman was admitted to hospital with acute pulmonary edema, mild abdominal discomfort and hyperamylasemia. From the 2nd hospital day hypertensive episodes occurred daily. The furosemide screening test for renovascular hypertension revealed elevated plasma renin activity (PRA) but an intravenous pyelogram revealed a right suprarenal mass and no evidence of renovascular compression. Elevated values of plasma and urinary catecholamines indicated a pheochromocytoma, and a single chromaffin tumour was resected. It is important to monitor left ventricular filling pressure during operative removal of a pheochromocytoma. Postoperatively the patient had normal blood pressure and PRA. Decreased urinary amylase clearance and abnormal pancreatic and salivary amylase isoenzymes were found.

The internal anal sphincter in the cat: a study of nervous mechanisms affecting tone and reflex activity.

1. Smooth muscle activities in rectum and internal anal sphincter have been recorded using intraluminal balloons.2. Reflex activation of the sphincter, caused by distension of the rectum, has been assessed before and after various combinations of blocking drugs.3. Responses to stimulation of hypogastric or sacral nerves, or to the administration of drugs with autonomic actions have been tested before and after various combinations of blocking drugs.4. Results indicate that the tone of the internal anal sphincter is influenced by a number of neural mechanisms. These include motor pathways involving both alpha-adrenergic and cholinergic mechanisms and inhibitory pathways involving both beta-adrenergic and non-adrenergic non-cholinergic mechanisms.5. Cholinergic contractions of the sphincter were converted to relaxations after alpha-adrenergic blockade. This indicates that the contractions are an indirect effect operating through an adrenergic reflex. Cholinergic relaxations may also be indirect and operate through reflex inhibition secondary to rectal contractions.6. Sphincteric motor activity is controlled largely through alpha-adrenergic mechanisms by adrenergic nerves acting directly on the muscle. beta-Adrenergic inhibitory mechanisms are thought to operate indirectly via ganglia.7. The over-all control of the sphincter is by complex reflex mechanisms involving numerous pathways and the activity of the sphincter at any one time is determined by the net balance between motor and inhibitory influences.8. Sacral nerve stimulation indicated that it contains cholinergic nerves to the rectum, non-adrenergic non-cholinergic inhibitory axons to the sphincter and variable numbers of adrenergic axons to the sphincter.9. Responses of the sphincter to drugs and nerve stimulation were often variable, as has been described many times in the literature. It is considered that this is due to complex combinations of indirect reflex effects, secondary to activation of structures outside the sphincter, operating with or against direct effects on the sphincter itself.
