[Chondrosarcoma. (An electronmicroscopic study) (author's transl)].

The ultrastructure of 6 chondrosarcomas was analysed. These areas which by means of light microscopy appear benign, displayed the same appearance as chondromas. Malignant areas are characterised by distined variation of cells, nuclei and nucleoli. There is an electron-dense zone of 400 A between the inner membrane of the nucleus and the chromatic in some nuclei containing dense chromatin. The amount of cytoplasmatic organellae decreases as differentiation decreases. Nevertheless there are sometimes cells with an unusual accumulation of cytoplasmic organellae.

[Microcalorimetric investigations of the host-parasite relationship between Biomphalaria glabrata and Schistosoma mansoni (author's transl)].

1. The ratio of dry weight to wet weight of infected snails (5.5 +/- 2.2%) is significantly smaller than that of uninfected animals (8.3 +/- 1.0%). 2. The specific values of oxygen consumption and heat-production per dry weight are significantly higher for infected snails (2.41 +/- 0.44 microliter O2/h/mg; 12.63 +/- 1.24 muW/mg) than for uninfected ones (1.88 +/- 0.24 microliter O2/h/mg, 8.94 +/- 0.91 muW/mg). 3. The rate of oxygen consumption always suffices to explain the measured heat flows for aerobic catabolism of carbohydrates or fats and proteins, respectively. Neither for infected nor for uninfected snails is it necessary to assume an anaerobic energy metabolism. 4. Structures in the calorimetrically obtained heat production curves are discussed.

[The ketone bodies in the hemolymph of Biomphalaria glabrata under starvation and infection with Schistosoma mansoni (author's transl)].

The metabolism of the snail Biomphalaria glabrata stressed by five days' starvation as well as by infection with Schistosoma mansoni was examined with regard to the metabolism of ketone bodies. Previous studies in the metabolism of this host--parasite relationship always resulted in changes in the same direction with starvation as well as with infection. Contrary to that the concentration of acetoacetate and beta-hydroxybutyrate measured in the hemolymph decreased significantly with starvation but increased significantly with infection. The following problems concerning the ketone body metabolism are discussed: on the one hand the differences between infected and starved snails, and on the other hand the differences between the snails and the mammals as well as in the invertebrates so far investigated.

[The function and legal position of the medical expert (author's transl)].

Numerous facets of the relationships between the judge and the expert affect the function of the panel and its deliberations. Rules of professional conduct may not inhibit the expert's role because no rules exist which run counter to the obligations of the legal advisor. A critical commentary is given of the censure of the federal court by certain medical experts which has caused a stir and provoked an appropriate riposte from a federal judge. The expert differs from an ordinary witness in assisting the judge by interpreting medical facts so that a just assessment may be arrived at. This is the basis of his "power". The responsibility for the judgement rests solely with the judge. Courts, doctors and especially medical experts are inevitable sentenced to collaboration with each other. The exchange of facts and information between litigants may help to calm the apparently strained relations between doctors, patients and the judiciary.

[Mucoserotympanon in adults (author's transl)].

In a great number of adults we investigated anamnesis, etiology, symptomatic, age and sex distribution and quantity of seromucotympanon. Tympanometry is represented as the final method for diagnosis and control. Moment and application of conservative and operative therapy are discussed.
