Levels of secretory immunoglobulin A, lysozyme (muramidase) and albumin in healthy adults of different ages.

The content of secretory IgA (sIgA,) lysozyme and albumin was studied in the saliva of 40 health-service employees of different ages without evident signs of disease. The levels of lysozyme decrease significantly with the advancing age whereas those of sIgA and albumin do not decrease up to the age of 55. The levels of lysozyme and sIgA show a significant mutual correlation.

The levels of immunoglobulins (IgG. IgA. IgM) under the effect of age and exposure to the mining environment in uranium industry.

IgG, IgA, and IgM levels were measured in 347 miners working in the underground of uranium mines; in 156 men entering into the work in mines, and in 101 men working in food industry and food distribution, all in the region of Central Bohemia. Significantly elevated IgG and IgM levels were found in the subgroup of miners exposed a short time (less than five years) to the mining environment, whereas elevated IgA levels were found in the subgroup exposed more than 15 years. The comparison of differences with age-matched controls has shown that the levels of IgM are significantly increased in the miners subgroup exposed to the mining environment no more than five years. In miners subgroups above 31 years a significant decline of IgG levels occurs. The expression of Ig levels' changes is not uniform in all exposed persons; an apparent heterogeneity occurs in miners population. Some differences in IgG and IgM levels were found between the two 31- to 40-year-old control subgroups. The possible conditions for differences found are discussed from the point of view of the effect of ionizing radiation and from the point of view of the stressing influence of environment and employment.

The values of alpha 2-macroglobulin in the serum of persons at work with x-rays.

A group of 86 persons (65 women, 21 men) working at the risk of ionizing radiation (IR) was examined for the levels of alpha 2-macroglobulin (alpha2-M), and compared to a group of age matched healthy population. Whereas the difference in men did not reach a level of significance, significant difference was assessed in women: in a subgroup older than 40 y exposed to the IR a rise of alpha 2-M levels was noted in correlation with the age. Multiple correlation coefficients showed a synergistic influence of both age and exposure to IR. The results are discussed from the point of view of the hypothesis that in exposed women a shifting realizes of usual old age changes to younger age group. A possibility is suggested to use the examination of alpha 2-M levels for preventive control of workers at the risk of IR.

Levels of immunoglobulins and lysozyme in 10-year-old children from different regions and the condition of the lymphatic apparatus. I. Condition of tonsils in connection with some immunological parameters and different environment.

The condition of tonsils was investigated and the levels of serum IgG, IgA, IgM and lysozyme were measured in 305 ten-year-old children from three localities of the Central-Bohemian Region. The tonsils were not enlarged in 30.8% of children, in 26.2% they were enlarged, in 35.5% furrowed and in 7.5% of children tonsillectomy had been carried out. Mean levels of IgA were significantly higher in two localities in children with enlarged tonsils, insignificantly lower in children with furrowed tonsils and lowest in tonsilectomized children. The difference in the distribution of IgM levels were significant between girls with enlarged furrowed tonsils. The levels of lysozyme were not correlated with the finding in the tonsils, but a significant difference was found in the groups with enlarged tonsils between the three locailties under observation and in the groups with furrowed tonsils between two localities. The importance of the findings observed is discussed from the point of view of a possible influence of air pollution in two of the three localities under study.

Serum immunoglobulin levels in cancer patients. III. Immunoglobulin levels and metastases of malignant tumors.

The levels of IgG, IgA and IgM were followed in 93 patients with metastases of various tumors in the liver, bones, lymph nodes, lungs and with the generalization of tumor in multiple organs. A significant increase of IgG was noted in those patients where liver, bones and lymph nodes were involved, compared to other tumor groups as well as with the values considered as normal range. A significant rise of the IgA class was observed in patients with liver metastases compared to cases with the generalization of tumor. In all groups the mean levels were scattered above the upper limit of normal values. The mean levels of IgM class did not exceed the upper normal limit, but in the group of bone metastases a significant rise was noted compared with the group of generalized tumors.

Serum immunoglobulin levels in cancer patients IV. The influence of therapy on the levels of IgG, IgA and IgM.

The levels of immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA, IgM) were measured in the blood serum of 232 patients with malignant diseases subjected to therapy with irradiation, cytostatic drugs, hormones and active immunotherapy. The values of two samples were compared before and after therapy. The local irradiation with usual doses and technique did not significantly influence the Ig levels. On the contrary, the levels of all three Ig classes decreased after chemotherapy, but only the IgG decrease was significant. A rise of Ig followed active immunotherapy and hormonal therapy but these changes were not significant.

Levels of alpha1-antitrypsin in the spring and autumn seasons.

In a group of 84 pairs of 11-year-old children of both sexes, the level of the alpha1-antitrypsin (alpha1-AT) were ascertained in the autumn and spring. Although the mean levels of alpha1-AT in the two seasons hardly differed, the highly significant seasonal changes in the distribution curves of alpha1-AT values were noted in boys, whereas the levels showed higher stability in girls.

[New methods in vascular surgery. Intraoperative transluminal catheter-recanalization using Dotter's technic].

The combination of vascular operative procedures and transluminal recanalization with a Dotter-catheter is recommended. According to own results this has been proven to be very successful, especially in old patients or in patients in a reduced physical state. The main advantage is a shorter duration of the surgical procedures and a reduction of the operative stress situation compared to other surgical methods. For the application of the Dotter-technique, however, it is necessary to observe the indications carefully.

Serum immunoglobulin levels in cancer patients. II. Serum immunoglobulins and stage of tumor progress.

A study of the IgG, IgA and IgM levels in relation with the clinical course of the tumor disorders revealed the IgG values to correlate with the progress of the disease. Their levels were found to rise from stage I to stage III of the classification according to tumor progress, the difference between these stages being of statistical significance. A similar trend, though statistically nonsignificant, was noted also in IgA levels, but these proved right from the start to be higher than the values reported for the apparent normal population. The rising tendency in the IgG--and the less striking one in the IgA levels were also confirmed by a comparison of the mean values of collections separated by a definite time interval in the same patients and this both for the deteriorated and unchanged cases, but not for the group of improved patients.

Immunoglobulins under the influence of nonspecific factors. III. Immunoglobulins, pertussis antibodies and lysozyme in three child populations exposed to different air pollution.

The levels of IgG, IgA, IgM, lysozyme, agglutinins against B. pertussis and B. parapertussis were followed in the blood serum of 306 children 9--10 years old in 3 areas of Central Bohemian region. In children dwelling in areas with more polluted air significantly higher levels of serum lysozyme and of parapertussis antibodies were found by the t-test. The distribution of these values shows significant differences between more polluted areas in comparison with lower-pollution area also in Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. The average levels of Ig approached statistically critical values but did not reach them, but significant differences in the distribution of values of IgG and IgA were shown by the F-test and chi2-test between lightly and heavily polluted areas. The values of immunological reactions in polluted areas were always higher than in the non-polluted group. This provides evidence for a hypothesis about a stimulatory effect of polluted air on immunological mechanisms in child population. The higher values of IgM observed recently by other authors in women were shown in girls of 9--10 years.
