Seroepidemiological investigations performed with 1,620 serum samples and serodiagnostic tests with 166 paired sera demonstrated that swine influenza virus type A/New Jersey 8/76 (Hsw1N1) played no role in the epidemiology of human influenza in a large town of Romania during 1977.

The authors have studied on 25 cases of hypercorticism, one of the mechanisms of producing arterial hypertension, the renin-angiotensin system. The study showed that in only 20% of the cases plasma renin activity was high whereas in the remaining 80% other mechanisms were responsible for the hypertension. In the cases in which the plasma activity of renin was high, by studying the changes in the value of electrolytes we were able to derive some understanding of the mechanism of action of the RA2A system. Thus, the literature data show that sometimes the excess of glucocorticoids causes hypertension by activating directly the RA2A system and concomitently inhibiting the renin-kalikrein system (RKKS) and PgS; at other times, the excess of glucocorticoids is exerted on the same renin-angiotensin system, but via ACTH and ADH, the electrolytes values being those that demonstrate the borrowed mechanism.
The effect of crinofizin--a pineal peptide extract with clinical use--on adrenalin hyperglycemia was tested in the rabbit. Administered subcutaneously one hour before an i.v. hyperglycemic dose of adrenalin, crinofizin significantly reduced the hyperglycemic effect of this hormone. The results reveal the functional antagonism between adrenalin and hypoglycemic pineal peptide(s) called "pinealine".

Vegetative troubles induced by sympathetic hyperfunction are presented and an attempt is made to systematize them. Functional tachycardia or premature beats in neurocirculatory asthenia, symptoms of sympathetic irritation in cervical radicular syndrome, hyperkinetic syndrome with positive exercise test, long Q--T syndrome, the classic troubles of sympathetic origin in pheochromocytoma and "the vegetative storm" in cerebral damages or excessively stressful situations may be included in the sympathetic hyperfunction syndrome. Of greater clinical interest is the cervical radicular syndrome with sympathetic irritation, which is presented in details, with reappraisal of some morphofunctional data that must be taken into account in clinical reasoning.
The 12 routine electrocardiographic leads, apical phonocardiogram, piezocarotidogram, Korotkov blood pressure, sitting and standing, were recorded before and after 500 cc blood sampling in 20 hypertensive donors and 20 normals. The cardiodynamic (systolic time intervals) disturbances in hypertensive donors were more frequent and more persistent than those observed in the normotensive group, despite the favourable effect of the blood sampling on the blood pressure values. The most significant cardiodynamic alteration was the increase in the pre-ejection period/left ventricular ejection time--indicating a more reduced ejection fraction in the hypertensive group and pointing out that the improvement of left ventricular work by decreasing the blood pressure after blood sampling is less important than the hypoxic effect of blood loss.

The somatotype of 92 children with sexual structural anomalies of whom 28 with female Turner's syndrome, 22 with Klinefelter's syndrome, 20 with adreno-genital syndrome, 14 with hypospadias, 2 with Reinfenstein's syndrome and 6 with feminizing testis was established on the basis of biometric and genetically determined morphologic characteristics (dermatoglyphics, pigment complex). A morphogram utilizing 12 anthropometric and 5 dermatoglyphic parameters was constructed; it can be used in phenotypical differentiation of the anatomo-clinical variants of structural anomalies of the genitalia and gonads. The 12 anthropometric parameters were: weight, stature, height of the head + neck segment, the sternum-symphysis distance, length of arms and legs, the biacromial and bitrochanterian diameters, the circumference of the thorax, abdomen, hips and head. The dermatoglyphic parameters were: the digital delta index, TFRC, a-b ridge count, the ATD angle and the A line obliquity. For longitudinal assessment of the phenotype of children with structural anomalies of genitalia and gonads, the authors propose utilization of the percentile diagrams regarding weight, stature, pubes to floor distance, and the biacromial and bitrochanterian diameters.
The particularities of influenza evolution in a large town of Romania during 1982 are outlined on the ground of the data obtained by a complex methodology of active influenza surveillance. The epidemiological features of influenza are discussed within the complex framework of the relationships between the antigenic structure of circulating influenza viruses and the profile of antiinfluenza immunity among the population.
Twenty-seven patients aged 7-18 years, with hyperthyroidism and diffuse goite received 131I and 125I in doses of 200-350 muCi/gm of gland. The drug was given in a unique dose to 14 patients and fractioned (maximum 4 doses) to the rest. The total maximum dose was 15 mCi. Doubtless recovery was obtained in 25 cases and probable improvement in another 2 (the patients were lost track of). Exophthalmometric values did not increase in any of the patients and in 2 cases of edematous exophthalmos the protrusion and edema disappeared after this treatment. Clear improvement in the nutritional state occurred and puberty followed a normal course. The incidence of both early and late transient hypothyroidism was 1/25, while permanent hypothyroidism occurred in 5/25. In 5 cases administration of 125I in doses of 500 muCi/gm of gland was not effective and necessitated 131I readministration. It was concluded that radioactive iodine (131 isotope) is an effective radiopharmaceutical for radical treatment of hyperthyroidism in children and adolescents. The therapeutical innocuity of 131I was perfect and the dose of 200-350 muCi/gm of gland was the most adequate. A follow-up of the functional status is however advocated in these patients for detection of late hypothyroidism.
This paper sums up for clinical purposes the recent data and some of the authors' own observations concerning the genesis and variability of heart sounds. The importance of some factors in the "cardio-hemo-vasculo-thoracic" complex where the heart sounds are produced and transmitted, is especially emphasized; such are: acceleration and decelaration of the blood, rapidly variable shape and compliance of the cardiovascular container, turbulence phenomena, atrial and ventricular contraction and relaxation, closure and opening of cardiac valves. The role of some physiological or pathological changes in myocardial contractility and compliance in over- or underdamping of intracardiac vibrations generating heart sounds, is also analysed. Some examples of alteration of the 4th, 1st, 2nd and 3rd sound in the 3rd degree A--V block, nodal rhythm, short P--R, LBBB, aortic atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, are presented.
