[The Weaver syndrome in cattle. Clinical, biochemical and pathologico-anatomic studies in a Braunvieh/Brown Swiss cow with bovine progressive degenerative myeloencephalopathy].

The clinical signs and pathological lesions, consistent with Bovine Progressive Degenerative Myeloencephalopathy (BPDME), are described in a heifer. The animal was an 18-month-old Braunvieh-/Brown Swiss crossbreed with 50% Brown Swiss. Both the sire as well as the dam were related to the bull "B.". The only neurological signs were a posterior ataxia. Mobility and coordination of the front legs were normal. The CK activity of the cerebrospinal fluid was enhanced. There was a moderate to severe degeneration of the white matter consisting of marked axonal degradation and distension and degradation of myelin sheats in all parts of the spinal cord as well as in the medulla oblongata. The lesions were more severe in the descending than in the ascending tracts.

[Fenoterol (Partusisten)-associated lung edema. A case report].

The side effects of a beta 2-mimetic tocolytic therapy are of importance for anaesthesiologists who administer anaesthesia for obstetric operations, as our case report illustrates. In a healthy 28 year old pregnant woman during the 32nd week of pregnancy i.v. fenoterol was started because of premature labor. After two days severe respiratory failure developed and cesarean section was performed. The patient needed mechanical ventilation with positive endexpiratory pressure and high inspiratory oxygen concentrations (F1O2 greater than 0.7) for 5 days thereafter. The chest x-ray revealed a fluid lung. With artificial respiration and a consequent diuretic therapy with dopamine and furosemide (10 mg . h-1 continuously, negative water balance--5,000 ml on the 4th day) gas exchange improved and extubation was possible on the 6th postoperative day. After exclusion of cardiac or renal disease as well as aspiration of gastric content, the diagnosis of a fenoterol-associated pulmonary edema was thought probable. From the literature it is known that beta 2-mimetics can aggravate the increased water and sodium retention during pregnancy and cause pulmonary edema by an additional increase in pulmonary artery pressure. Therapy consists of adequate oxygenation and induction of diuresis with continuous furosemide and dopamine to achieve negative water balance. When administering anaesthesia to patients on tocolytic therapy positive water balance has to be avoided and great care must be directed to the postoperative gas exchange.

[Immunohistochemistry: theoretical potentials and practical application].

Immunhistochemical methods are increasingly used and their application in surgical pathology is obvious. Nine different immunohistochemical techniques are compared in this review article. The peroxidase anti-peroxidase method of Sternberger et al. (1970), the avidin biotin complex method of Hsu et al. (1981) and the labeled avidin biotin technique of Guesdon et al. (1979) are to be preferred. Two step methods using labeled antibodies such as alkaline phosphatase or peroxidase-labeled second antibodies are less sensitive. However, two-step methods using alkaline phosphatase-labeled antibodies offer the advantage of double staining procedures since alkaline phosphatase reacts with different azo dyes and results in a wide spectrum of colours in the final reaction product. At present, the major problems of immunohistochemistry in daily work are the selection of the fixative and of appropriate controls. Though both problems remain unresolved, immunohistochemical methods should be used for special problems in surgical pathology.

[Lugol's solution and thyroid gland activity in cattle. Determination of the total thyroxine in blood plasma as a method for evaluating thyroid gland activity].

The aim of the present investigations was to examine if an intrauterine treatment with Lugol's solution in cows influences the activity of the thyroid gland. The thyrotropin-stimulation test was used to evaluate the function of the thyroid gland. An injection of 10 I. U. thyreotropin induced within 3 hours an increase of the T4 blood concentrations which reached maximal values 9 hours after the treatment and thereafter decreased again. Thyreotropin concentrations increasing from 5 to 30 I. U. led to a dose-dependent increase of the T4 blood concentrations. The T4 values obtained by 40 i. U. thyreotropin were lower than that induced with 30 I. U. of the hormone. The T4 concentrations increased stronger and remained elevated longer in cows pretreated intrauterine with Lugol's solution than in untreated control cows. The experiments demonstrated that an intrauterine infusion of Lugol's solution may result in an increased activity of the thyroid gland.

Metabolic and hemodynamic response to hyperventilation in patients with head injuries.

The effects of controlled moderate hyperventilation (paCo2 approximately 31 mmHg) on cardiovascular parameters and whole-body-oxygen-uptake (VO2) was studied in 10 patients with head injuries, who were unconscious and artificially ventilated at the time of the investigation. VO2 was measured with the Beckmann Metabolic Measurement Cart and also calculated from cardiac output and arterio-mixed venous oxygen content difference. A mean increase in VO2 (+ 19.6% of control) was observed after 2 h of hyperventilation. Cardiac output remained unchanged. This resulted in a decrease of venous oxygen content and impaired full oxygenation of the blood. Our results indicate that hyperventilation should not be a routine procedure. Close monitoring of arterial and venous blood gases is recommended, when hyperventilation is applied.

Investigations concerning the correlation between liver cell proliferation, production of alpha-fetoprotein, and DNA-synthesis of lymphocytes in the spleen of NMRI-mice. An autoradiographic and immunohistochemical study.

To obtain more information concerning the correlation between liver cell proliferation, production of alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) and DNA-synthesis of lymphocytes in the central and peripheral parts of periarteriolar lymphatic sheaths ( PALS ) of the spleen, these parameters were monitored in intervals of 12h after CCl4-poisoning of NMRI-mice using autoradiographic and immunohistochemical methods. The results indicate that synthesis of AFP is not linked closely to proliferation of hepatocytes because in contrast to DNA-synthesis the production of AFP was only detectable in a very small subpopulation of liver parenchymal cells reaching a peak before the majority of hepatocytes was found to enter the S-phase of the cell cycle. Beyond this, in vivo no general suppressive effect of AFP on proliferation of lymphocytes in preferably T-dependent areas of the spleen could be detected since the 3H-TdR-labeling index in these compartments increased, reaching a peak 48h after the maximum of hepatocytes producing AFP had occurred.

[Sonography in the diagnosis of acute abdomen].

A prospective study with 466 patients demonstrated high value of sonography in combination with radiological methods in acute diagnosis of the abdomen. It is shown that sonography and radiology complement each other excellently. In 23% of the cases the examination, which resembles screening, indicates the quickest and most economic way through diagnostic procedures. The rate of failure is 3% only.

[Rewarming from moderate to deep hypothermia: plasma catecholamine content, metabolism and circulatory function. 2 case reports].

Two patients were rewarmed from hypothermia (esophageal temperature 27.2 degrees C, 27.5 degrees C respectively). The first case suffered from head-injury after alcohol ingestion and was deeply comatose. A metabolic or cardiovascular regulatory response to cold was not observed in this patient. The relationship between esophageal temperature and whole-body-oxygen consumption was quantified with a Q10 of 2.75 during rewarming (27.2-37.2 degrees C). His epinephrine levels were greatly elevated to 1,000 pg/ml whereas norepinephrine levels were only moderately increased to 250 pg/ml. Premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) during intubation or from the pulmonary artery catheter were not observed. The second patient was a 87 year old man with accidental hypothermia. He exhibited shivering at an esophageal temperature of 27.5 degrees C which indicated persistent thermoregulation. In contrast to the first case his norepinephrine levels were elevated to 1,500 pg/ml and his epinephrine levels only to 450 pg/ml. After onset of surface rewarming an additional increase in norepinephrine levels was observed and an increasing rate of PVC's (15/min) recorded, which ceased when temperature returned to normal. Our observations indicate that part of the cardiac complications during rewarming from deep hypothermia may result from thermoregulation and additional catecholamine liberation.

[Intersexuality in the horse. Morphologic, hormone analytic and cytogenetic studies in an Arabohaflinger horse].

A case of intersexuality in an arabo-haflinger horse is described. The external genitalia consisted of mammary gland, vulva and hypertrophic clitoris; the inner genitalia of rudimental testes. The sexual behaviour was typically male-like. The chromosome analysis showed the female karyotype 64,XX. The presence of testes in a genetically female animal is explained by translocation of an Y-chromosome fragment bearing the gene for the H-Y-antigen.
