The absence of corneal toxicity with low-level topical anesthesia.

By means of an osmotic pump we infused 0.3% proparacaine solution continuously into the central stroma of a rabbit cornea. An area of anesthesia about 6 mm in diameter was maintained for several days. The epithelium remained unaffected and healed normally where it was scraped away in the anesthetic area. Similarly, the repeated instillation into the rabbit's eye of 0.05% proparacaine eyedrops at ten-minute intervals throughout the day resulted in continual anesthesia without signs of epithelial dystrophy. It seems that the toxic level of proparacaine is above that required for anesthesia.

An improved method for restraining rabbits for examination of the eye.

Rabbits are strapped to a specially shaped platform with their legs dangling over the sides. This system of restraint allows freer access to the eyes for examination than other methods and prevents the animal from injuring itself by kicking. The animals appear to be quite relaxed and show no signs of harm on release.

Glibenclamide-induced changes in blood and tissue metabolite levels in fish.

Oral administration of a new antidiabetic drug, glibenclamide, in a freshwater fish, Puntius conchonius lead to notable changes in the blood and tissue metabolite levels. The drug caused significant hypoglycaemia and glycogen deposition in liver and skeletal muscles. Besides, the treated fish evinced marked hypocholesteraemia, hypoaminoacidaemia, a fall in FFA and phospholipid concentrations while the cholesterol content increased in the liver and kidneys. Most conspicuous change in various metabolite levels occurred at 8 hrs posttreatment, and restitution of normal values was achieved 24-48 hrs later. The drug appears to be endowed with remarkable insulinotropic property even in fishes.
