To discover the influence of hemiplegia on arthrographic changes in hemiplegic shoulders, we compared arthrographic findings from paralyzed and nonparalyzed shoulders in 77 patients with hemiplegia. The correlation between arthrographic changes in paralyzed shoulders and characteristics of the hemiplegic condition was also investigated. Hemiplegic changes were considered to be responsible for adhesive changes in affected shoulders because those changes were found in paralyzed shoulders at a statistically significant higher rate (54.6%) than in the nonparalyzed side (32.5%). The occurrence rate of contrast leakage from capsule tear on the subscapular bursa and the bicipital tendon sleeve was higher on the nonparalyzed side than on the paralyzed side. It is suggested that capsular contracture due to hemiplegia prohibits capsular tear during arthrographic maneuvers. No significant difference was found in the occurrence of rotator cuff tear between the paralyzed and the nonparalyzed shoulder. Those changes on the paralyzed side were not correlated with any characteristics of hemiplegics except for shoulder pain prior to the onset of hemiplegia.

From Escherichia coli K12 W2252-11U-cells, the Ter-15 mutant, the Ter-15 (F'-lac) and the Ter-15 (F+) cells, lipopolysaccharides were isolated and the primary structure of its core oligosaccharides was elucidated. When the F'-lac episome is transferred to the Ter-15 mutant by conjugation, the structure of the glucose III(1 leads to 3)glucose II(1 leads to 3)glucose I residue and the galactose I(1 leads to 2)-linked to the glucose I residue in the core oligosaccharide from the Ter-15 mutant changes into the structure of the glucose IV(1 leads to 6)glucose III(1 leads to 2)glucose II(1 leads to 3)glucose I residue and the galactose I (1 leads to 6)-linked to the glucose I residue in the core oligosaccharide from the Ter-15 (F'-lac) cells, but the core oligosaccharide in the Ter-15 (F+) cells is the same structure with that of the core oligosaccharide from the Ter-15 mutant when F+ episome is transferred to the Ter-15 mutant. Also, the core oligosaccharide from the Ter-15 (F'-lac) cells shows the same structure with that of the core oligosaccharide from E. coli K12 W2252-11U- cells (the parent cells). As the result, the ability to produce the structure of the core oligosaccharide in E. coli K12 W2252-11U- cells is recovered in the Ter-15 (F'-lac) cells by the dominant expression of lac gene or its containing DNA segment in F'-lac episome.
We report on the efficacy of rice bran in hypercalciuric patients with urinary calculous disease. After the administration of defatted rice bran at a dosage of 20 gm. daily for 4 weeks urinary calcium excretion was reduced significantly from 402 plus or minus 102 to 291 plus or minus 123 mg. per 24 hours. In 6 patients who showed a reduction of urinary calcium excretion an increase in urinary calcium excretion was observed 4 weeks after stopping the administration. All 7 patients who previously received defatted rice bran were given processed or rice bran free of phytin at a dosage of 20 gm. daily. The value of urinary calcium excretion increased again during the administration of processed rice bran but was less marked than that of the preceding 6 patients. Although it is interesting to debate whether the influence of rice bran on the urinary calcium excretion depends on the action of phytin or of other constituents defatted rice bran should be effective in reducing urinary excretion of calcium. These results would come up to the expectations of the patients with recurrent urinary calculous disease.
The acute effects of maternal stress (restraint for 20 to 140 min) on the plasma levels of epinephrine, norepinephrine and dopamine in pregnant rats and their fetuses as well as on the catecholamine content of fetal adrenals and the LH-RH content of fetal hypothalami, were investigated at day 22 of gestation. Despite of a relatively moderate increase of maternal plasma catecholamines a significant increase of norepinephrine (p less than 0.05) and dopamine (p less than 0.05) levels in plasma of the fetuses 30 min after starting maternal stress was observed. The fetal blood concentrations of catecholamines before and during maternal stress were significantly higher than those of the mothers (p less than 0.05 to p less than 0.001). A gradual decrease of the fetal adrenal content of epinephrine and norepinephrine was found, whereas an unchanged content of dopamine of fetal adrenals was registered during maternal restraining. The LH-RH content of fetal hypothalami rose significantly (p less than 0.005) 60 min after starting maternal stress and returned to initial values 140 min after starting restraining.

A case of seminal vesicle cyst associated with ipsilateral renal dysplasia and ectopic ureter opening into seminal vesicle was experienced recently in our clinic. The case was a 14-year-old boy with the chief complaint of macrohematuria. Left kidney was not visualized in the excretory urogram and no evidence of left renal artery was seen in the abdominal aortogram. On cystoscopy the left ureteral orifice as well as the left half side of the trigone were not detected and this region appeared elevated, suggesting an extrinsic mass displacing the posterior bladder wall. The right ureteral orifice was normal. CT-scan and echogram showed the mass in the retrovesical region. The seminal vesiculogram demonstrated a seminal vesicle cyst and reflux up the left dilated ureter. After left nephroureterovesiculectomy was performed, renal dysplasia and a seminal vesicle cyst were histopathologically confirmed. The definitions in the literature for seminal vesicle cyst with maldeveloped kidney and ectopic ureter opening into the seminal vesicle with maldeveloped kidney are somewhat confusing, and they should be standardized for proper diagnosis and treatment of such cases.
The ocular effects of two beta blocking drugs, carteolol and practolol, were assessed in beagle dogs. Practolol-treated dogs showed a tear flow reduction: histopathological examination showed lymphocytic infiltration in the lacrymal glands and electroretinogram showed a decrease in the amplitudes of the A + B-wave. By contrast, no drug-related abnormal changes were observed in carteolol-treated dogs. These results were thought to indicate that a tear flow measurement and electroretinogram examination should be used in the evaluation of the safety of beta blocking drugs.
