Immunochemical study of the plasma low and high density lipoproteins in Tangier disease.

Major disturbances of the lipoproteins in Tangier serum have been investigated using electrophoretic and immunochemical techniques. Previously described anomalies concerning the striking deficiency in HDL and the very low levels of apo A-I and apo A-II in Tangier patients are illustrated and explained. Anomalies concerning the fast LDL of Tangier serum are attributed to different forms of apo B not previously described. These data are strengthened by the features of a 2-dimensional electrophoresis method elaborated in the laboratory which allows apoproteins to separate in the second dimension. These apoproteins are obtained by the delipidation of the lipoproteins fractionated in a first polyacrylamide discontinuous gel. This method clearly shows the distribution of apoproteins in the first lipoprotein track and is in perfect accordance with the new concept of lipoprotein particles.

Filamentary tubular inclusions in type II pneumocytes of the guinea pig.

The type II pneumocytes of guinea pigs were studied with a transmission electron microscope. It was shown that 5-20% of type II cells contained filamentary tubular inclusions. No reports of similar structures in type II cells of any species have been found in the literature to date. These inclusions measured 90 nm in diameter, varying up to 3 micron in length, and were generally present in the basal and lateral portions of the cells with a close association to the lamellar bodies. They were usually straight but could be curved and tended to aggregate into parallel stacks. In cross-sections, these filamentary tubular inclusions were surrounded by a thickened unit membrane and were composed of microfilaments arranged in circular fashion around a central core. In longitudinal sections, they consisted of rod-like bodies with three lines of filaments. The possible function of the filamentary tubular inclusions is also discussed.

Galanin-induced hyperglycemia: effect on insulin and glucagon.

Synthetic galanin, infused at a rate of 4 micrograms/kg body weight/h for 30 min, elicited a mild but significant hyperglycemia in conscious dogs and a fall in plasma insulin. Pancreatic glucagon, epinephrine, norepinephrine, cortisol and growth hormone levels were not affected significantly. The mild hyperglycemic action of galanin seems to be due to an inhibition of insulin production. Thus galanin appears to be involved in glucose homeostasis.

Minimal change renal disease associated with thymoma and pancreatic carcinoma.

A case of minimal change renal disease associated with thymoma and pancreatic carcinoma is reported. A clinical manifestation of nephrotic syndrome developed about 5 weeks before the patient's demise and two different primary tumors were revealed only at the time of autopsy. Circumstantial evidences support that minimal change disease was a paraneoplastic process related to thymona rather than either the one related to pancreatic carcinoma or a mere coincidence. Review of the literature disclosed five cases of thymona with associated nephrotic syndrome. Herein, we report another case of such an unusual association and compare the present case with the previously reported.

Disseminated Trichosporon beigelii infection in a patient with malignant histiocytosis.

A case of disseminated Trichosporon beigelii infection is reported. Trichosporon inhabits the soil, but may also be present in the human skin and mouth as a normal flora. Occasionally it causes superficial mycotic infection, but it is rarely invasive. A review of literature disclosed 21 reported cases of invasive Trichosporon beigelii infection, to date. Of these, two cases were from Japan. The scarcity of reports on this invasive infection may be due to a lack of awareness of the organism. Histologically, it should be carefully differentiated from Candida.

Relationship between secretory IgA, IgA-containing (C3-fixing) circulating immune complexes, and complement components (C3, C4) in patients with obstructive jaundice.

Serum secretory IgA, IgA-containing circulating immune complexes (IgA-CIC), complement components, and major immunoglobulins were measured in patients with biliary tract stones and/or tumors of the biliary tract or pancreas. The levels of secretory IgA and total IgA were increased in patients with and without obstructive jaundice. The levels of both C3 and C4 were significantly higher in patients with or without obstructive jaundice than in healthy controls. In patients with obstructive jaundice the increased levels of secretory IgA, total IgA, and IgA-CIC were correlated with the increase of C3 but not with that of C4.
