To evaluate the correlation of cardiothoracic ratios (CTR) on chest radiography with the sizes of the four cardiac chambers, we studied 41 normal persons and 77 cardiac patients using two-dimensional echocardiography (2DE). The transverse cardiac diameter and the CTR were ascertained from their chest radiographs. Using 2DE, each cardiac chamber was evaluated three-dimensionally, by measuring the short and long diameters of each left (LV) and right ventricle (RV), the diameter of the RV outflow, the anteroposterior, transverse, and long diameters of each left (LA) and right atrium (RA). These values were corrected using the square root of the body surface area. The correlation coefficient for the CTR was greatest in the long diameter of the LA (r = 0.84), and was greater in the atrial diameters (r greater than or equal to 0.71) than in the other diameters except for the transverse diameter of the RA (r less than or equal to 0.51). The contribution of each cardiac chamber to the transverse cardiac diameter was evaluated in 34 patients with cardiac enlargement by a method using the null hypothesis, which we originally designed. Consequently, the contribution of the LV to the CTR was definitely proven in two patients, that of RV in two, that of LA in 15 and that of RA in nine. These results indicated that the CTR is strongly influenced by enlargement of the LA.

We treated 100 patients of upper urinary tract stone using extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), from April to October 1986. Eighty-six of the patients were treated by ESWL monotherapy, and the other cases required further treatment, such as percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN), percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL), and transurethral ureterolithotripsy (TUL). On the X-ray film obtained from one to three months after ESWL, 73 patients had no stones, 8 patients had sandy stones, 7 patients had small fragments less than 5 mm, 2 patients had large stones equal to or greater than 5 mm and 10 patients could not be followed up. Therefore, 97.7% of all patients were successfully treated. In conclusion, ESWL is considered to be an ideal method to treat upper urinary tract stones, and soon will become the first choice of treatment of urolithiasis together with the progress in endourological techniques.

Several studies on the effects of atrial natriuretic polypeptide (ANP) on aldosterone production using isolated adrenal cells have been reported, and they have consistently demonstrated the reduced production of aldosterone by ANP. However, the results on the corticosterone production are sundry. Since ANP selectively activates particulate guanylate cyclase, a possibility could exist that cyclic GMP is the second messenger of ANP signal transduction. In order to demonstrate unequivocally a correlation of cyclic nucleotide levels with the ANP-induced steroidogenesis, we investigated the effects of various concentrations of alpha-human atrial natriuretic polypeptide (alpha-hANP) on aldosterone, corticosterone, cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP production in isolated glomerulosa and fasciculata cells of the rats. Rat glomerulosa and fasciculata cells were obtained by enzymatic digestion of the adrenals of male Wistar rats. The cell pellet was suspended in Hanks balanced salt solution-0.1% BSA buffer and distributed in 900 microliter aliquots to 12 X 75 mm glass tubes. The samples were preincubated for 90 min. in a 37 degrees C water bath under an atmosphere of 5% CO2/95% O2. Aliquots of the test samples were added in a 100 microliter volume and incubated for 4 hr. Total volume of the incubation mixture is 1.0 ml. Aldosterone, cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP were measured by radioimmunoassay and corticosterone was determined by fluorimetric method. The results indicated that alpha-hANP inhibited the secretion of aldosterone and corticosterone in rat glomerulosa cells. Alpha-hANP significantly decreased cyclic AMP production in the rat glomerulosa cells, while it markedly stimulated cyclic GMP production.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
Seven cases of swine myeloid leukaemias were investigated by light and electron microscopy. All animals were adult sows. Morphologically these cases were classified as myeloblastic leukaemia with maturation (Cases 1 to 6) and chronic myeloid leukaemia (Case 7). The neoplastic cells were composed of immature promyelocytoid cells in Case 1. In Cases 2, 3, 4 and 5 there were immature or mature promyelocytoid cells containing peroxidase-positive granules. In Case 6, the neoplastic cells consisted of promyelocytoid cells and myelocytoid cells. The latter predominated and contained not only peroxidase-positive granules but also peroxidase-negative ones. The neoplastic cells in Case 7 showed various stages of cell maturation. The morphological characteristics in our cases resembled those in human myeloid leukaemias.
The mental representative structure of hierarchically ordered semantic categories was explored with 66 aphasic patients and 60 normal adults by a word-verification task. Four words concerning living things and 10 line drawings depicting an object were prepared as stimuli. All possible pairings of each of the four words with each of the 10 line drawings were made to be verified. The results indicated that subjective category domains were more diffusive in aphasic patients than in normal adults, and that this alteration was exclusively due to increase of peripheral members, but not of central members. It was also revealed that normative category boundaries may be preserved vestigially or incompletely in aphasic patients except the severe fluent subgroup, in whom there may be profound disintegration of boundaries. On the other hand, some common features concerning intracategorical structure and preference among levels of abstraction across normal adults and aphasic patients permit the hypothesis that aphasic patients may retain partially normal semantic knowledge.
A new excretion vector, pEAP8, was constructed to develop an excretion system for Escherichia coli. This plasmid, derived from pEAP37, carried the weakly activated kil gene of plasmid pMB9 [Kobayashi et al., J. Bacteriol. 166 (1986) 728-732] and the penicillinase promoter and signal region of an alkalophilic Bacillus sp. to excrete foreign gene products. A gene for human growth hormone (hGH) was joined to this signal sequence through the HindIII site. The recombinant plasmid p8hGH1 thus constructed, was introduced into E. coli. The hybrid protein which was produced in E. coli carrying p8hGH1 was processed during transport through the inner membrane, with the mature hGH being excreted into the medium through the outer membrane which was made permeable by the action of the kil gene. The N-terminal amino acid sequence and the biological activity of the extracellular hGH were consistent with those of the authentic hGH.
The sum peak method based on the phenomenon of perturbed angular correlation was applied to study the chemical environments of 111In in intact platelet cells. The sum peak appearing in the gamma-ray spectrum of 111In which emits two gamma-rays in cascade was observed for 111InCl3 solutions and 111In-labeled platelets. An increase in intensity ratios of the sum peak to its single peak was found when 111In incorporated into platelets from its aqueous solution. This fact was discussed in terms of physico-chemical environments of 111In together with an evaluation of sum peak analysis in the spectra.
