A new larvicidal antibiotic, aculeximycin, was found in the culture broth of an actinomycete identified as Streptosporangium albidum. Aculeximycin was isolated from the culture filtrate by adsorption on a Diaion HP-20 column and successive elution with acidic aqueous acetone. It was extracted from the concentrated active fraction with 1-butanol and subjected to column chromatography on a Sephadex LH-20 column. Aculeximycin exhibited strong larvicidal activity against mosquito larvae as well as antimicrobial activities against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, yeasts and molds.
New antibiotics, mycoplanecins, were found in the culture broth of an actinomycete identified as Actinoplanes awajinensis subsp. mycoplanecinus subsp. nov. Mycoplanecin complex was extracted with organic solvents both from the culture filtrate and mycelium and purified by column chromatography on silica gel and Florisil. Mycoplanecin A, a major component, was separated by high performance liquid chromatography on Prep PAK-500/C18 column. The physico-chemical characterization revealed that mycoplanecin A was a new cyclic peptide antibiotic. Mycoplanecins exhibited strong activities primarily against mycobacteria and related microorganisms.

The anatomical organization of thalamic projections to the anterior and middle suprasylvian gyri in the cat has been studied by retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase. Area 5 receives a large number of fibers from the posterior lateral nucleus, and a few fibers from the dorsal lateral nucleus. It receives many fibers from the ventrolateral part of the medial pulvinar nucleus and from the suprageniculate and lateral pulvinar nuclei. Area 5 receives a considerable number of fibers from the lateral central, anterior ventral and lateral ventral nuclei, and only a few fibers from the paracentral nucleus. Area 7 receives numerous fibers from the medial pulvinar (dorsolateral and ventrolateral parts), lateral pulvinar, dorsal lateral, posterior lateral, lateral central and anterior ventral nuclei, and a lesser number from the lateral ventral nucleus. The suprageniculate and paracentral nuclei project only a few fibers to area 7. Area 21 has its main input from the medial pulvinar nucleus, mainly its dorsolateral part. It receives many fibers from the lateral pulvinar nucleus, and a few fibers from the dorsal lateral nuclei, the dorsolateral part of the posterior lateral nucleus and the lateral central and paracentral nucleus. Area 21 receives very few fibers from the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (NIM) and the inferior pulvinar nucleus, but receives no fibers from the anterior and lateral ventral nuclei. The thalamic afferents from the lateral bank of the lateral sulcus are similar to those from area 7 (crown). However, the lateral bank receives more fibers from the posterior lateral nucleus, and lesser fibers from the paracentral, anterior ventral and lateral ventral nuclei. It receives scarcely any fibers from the suprageniculate nucleus. The medial bank of the middle suprasylvian sulcus (Clare-Bishop area) receives cortical afferents mainly from the inferior pulvinar nucleus. It also receives fibers from the medial pulvinar nucleus, and a lesser number from the lateral pulvinar and posterior lateral nuclei. It receives a few fibers from the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus, particularly NIM and lamina B, and very few fibers from the suprageniculate, lateral central and paracentral nuclei.

The paper presents the case of a man with non-functioning unilateral kidney due to retroperitoneal and renal lymph node involvement of Hodgkin's disease, which we interpreted as unilateral renal pelvic tumor. The disease had progressed rapidly to its termination and renal failure in addition to cachexia developed. Nephrostomy on the tumor-uninvolved side had failed to restore renal function and the patient died 3 days after surgery. The study concerns the lack of clinical entity of the nephrotic syndrome even in the absence of glomerulonephropathy often described in the literature dealing with Hodgkin's disease.
We report a case of typical renovascular hypertension due to right renal artery stenosis treated with percutaneous transluminal angioplasty. The followup arteriogram demonstrated merely a partial dilatation of the stenotic segment but hypertension was remarkably improved. A right-to-left ratio of plasma renin activity in the renal venous effluent decreased from 2.67:1 to 1.10:1 following treatment. Affected renal function in the previously stenotic side was ameliorated. The procedure was well tolerated by the patient and blood pressure remained normotensive during the 5 months after angioplasty.

After unilateral nephrectomy and bilateral adrenal enucleation at 5 weeks of age, salt-loaded rats developed hypertension (ARH) at 6 weeks. Fibrous vascular protein and in vivo incorporation of 3H-lysine into this protein fraction were measured at 15 weeks of age in these animals. This study demonstrates: (1) that incorporation rates of 3H-lysine into cardiac collagen and elastin in ARH rats were greater than in control rats (p less than 0.001, respectively), and (2) that administration of phenoxy-benzamine hydrochloride decreased the incorporation of tritiated lysine into cardiac collagen in ARH rats, concomitant with a reduction in blood pressure. Based on these findings, increased synthesis of cardiac collagen and elastin appears to play an important role in the development of hypertension in ARH.
