The replication in RL-33 cells (rabbit lung cell line) of herpesvirus tamarinus isolated from cotton-topped marmosets (Saguinus oedipus) was investigated by electron microscopy. In the early stages of infection, ring-shaped and granular structures, and fibrillar materials were recognized in the nucleus. Immature particles were often found in such nuclei. The envelope of the virus was formed by budding through intracytoplasmic membranes, the inner nuclear membrane or the membrane of intracytoplasmic vacuoles. Virus particles which appeared to be budding through the plasma membrane were also observed. Aberrant viral forms were produced by independent budding of both the inner and outer nuclear membranes. The mature particles once enveloped acquired a second envelope by budding through intracytoplasmic double membranes or the outer nuclear membrane. Unusual virus-associated structures were observed in the cytoplasm and nucleus. Virus particles appeared to be released by the process of reverse phagocytosis.
About 96% of retinal detachments with a macular hole were cured by surgery. The most effective surgical procedure was diathermy with a macular buckling method and scleral infolding at the temporal part of the equatorial region, the rate of success being 100%. Only diathermy or diathermy plus scleral infolding at the temporal part of the equatorial region could reattach all detached retinas. Since macular buckling procedures made visual acuity worse, techniques without macular buckling should be used in cases without macular atrophy or degeneration of myopia. Retinal hemorrhage during or after operation was the most frequent complication (50%) of surgery for retinal detachment with a macular hole and occurred more frequently when macular buckling procedures were used. Macular hemorrhage caused deterioration of postoperative visual acuity.

Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectra at 90 MHz were measured for a number of side chain isomers of phytosterols (sterols with a C8H17 side chain, and delta 24-, 24-methylene, delta 22-, 24-ethylidene, 24-methly, 24-ethyl, 24-methyl-delta 22-, 24-ethyl delta 22-, and 24-ethyl-delta 22,25(27)-sterols) with or without a lanthanide shift reagent, tris[1,1,1,2,2,3,3 - heptafluoro - 7,7 - dimethyloctane - 4,6 - dionato]ytterbium, Yb(fod)3, and the effect of Yb(fod)3 on the side chain methyl protons is discussed. The change of the chemical shifts induced Yb(fod)3 for the side chain methyls was expressed in terms of the induced shift ratios (ISR values), i.e., the ratios of the induced chemical shifts of the respective side chain methyls to that of the fastest moving side chain methyl. The ISR values were sentitive to minor structural and stereochemical differences, but almost independent of ring structures and of substrate concentrations, thus providing confirmatory evidence for the side chain structures. Also, the Yb(fod)3-induced spectral patterns observed in the high-field methyl region bore the fingerprints of the side chain structures. Several isomeric pairs of sterols, which differ only in the geometry of double bonds or the absolute configuration at C-24 in the side chain, i.e., cis- and trans-isomers of delta 22-and 24-ethylidene sterols, 24R/alpha- and 24S/beta-methyl sterols, 24R/alpha- and 24S/beta-ethyl sterols, and 24S/alpha- and 24R/beta-ethyl-delta 22-sterols, could be differentiated from each other under the influence of Yb(fod)3, even though they were measured at 90 MHz.

Fatal herpesvirus tamarinus infection was observed in cotton-topped marmosets (Saguinus oedipus) imported from South America via the United States on August 26, 1976. In addition to the lesions hitherto reported in herpesvirus tamarinus infection, severe degenerative and necrotic changes of ganglion cells were recognized with intranuclear inclusion bodies in the plexus of the digestive tract and the sympathetic nerves and their ganglions in the abdominal cavity. Inflammatory or regressive changes were also noted in the central nervous system. A large number of basophilic or eosinophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies frequently recognized in multinucleated giant cells were observed in various organs and tissues, and they showed different shapes at the electron microscopic level. Morphological findings indicated that herpesvirus tamarinus infection seemed to be similar to herpes simplex virus infection in man. The findings of the susceptibility of a variety of cell cultures to the virus isolate serologically identified as herpesvirus tamarinus and physicochemical characteristics of the virus isolate were in general agreement with the findings of herpesvirus tamarinus already reported by previous workers.
Fortimicins C, D, and KE are new aminocyclitol antibiotics produced by a mutant of fortimicin-producing organisms. Their structures have been determined by 1H and 13C NMR and mass spectra and chemical degradations. Fortimicin C is 4-N-hydantoylfortimicin B, fortimicin KE is 6'-demethylfortimicin B, and fortimicin D is 4-N-glycylfortimicin KE. The last two antibiotics have purpurosamine C instead of 6-epi-purpurosamine B.
A simple proton magnetic resonance spectroscopic method is described for the identification and and confirmation of several stereoisomeric paris of C27 stanols as well as their keto and acetate derivatives related to cholesterol. The method, which involves the use of lanthanide shift reagents, is useful in distinguishing clearly between the isomeric pairs differing only in the geometry of a functional group and/or of the A/B-ring junction in the steroid skeleton.
