It has been shown that murine thymocytes have some effects on the proliferation and differentiation of hemopoietic stem cells in mice. However, the precise mechanisms are not well known. We, therefore, investigated the effects of thymocytes on the proliferation of erythroid progenitors (CFUE) by using a normal murine syngeneic system. The addition of thymocytes to marrow cultures increased the number of CFUE colonies from marrow cells. Furthermore, conditioned medium prepared from thymocytes enhanced the in vitro colony growth of CFUE in the presence of erythropoietin. This enhancing factor(s) had a molecular weight of about 32,000 daltons and was heat stable at 70 degrees C for 30 min. We have concluded that murine thymocytes promote erythroid colony formation in vitro by producing an erythropoietic stimulating factor(s), although its detailed characteristics remain to be elucidated.

Interpretation of spleen size in the liver scintigram was analysed in this study. The spleen size of 325 cases, finally proved of their diseases by autopsies, surgeries, etc., were interpreted by 11 nuclear medicine physicians from 8 institutions. Moderate splenomegaly was suggested when the size of the spleen, expressed by the ratio of longitudinal spleen length to the body width, exceeds 40%. Definite splenomegaly was correctly diagnosed at the ratio of more than 50%.

The origin of spleen colony-forming units (CFUs) and fibroblastoid colony-forming cells (CFUF) repopulating the marrow of femurs subcutaneously implanted in syngeneic and semi-syngeneic mice was studied by making use of a chromosome marker for CFUs and a cytotoxicity test for CFUF. The CFUs present in implants during first 4 weeks were of a mixture of those from the donor and the host, and thereafter, were exclusively of host origin. On the other hand, the colony growth of CFUF from the marrow of C57BL/6 femurs grafted in B6CBAF1 mice remained almost totally unaffected by treatment with C57BL/6 anti-B6CBAF1 serum as late as 40 weeks after implantation. Quite similar results were obtained from the marrow-depleted femur implants. It is concluded from the present studies that chimeric marrow consisting of hemopoietic cells of host origin and stromal cells of donor origin can repopulate the femurs within a matter of several weeks after subcutaneous implantation.
In Balb/C mice, the size and weight of the thymus and the number of thymus cells were reduced 1 week after the subcutaneous inoculation of Meth A fibrosarcoma. These changes were prevented by the intraperitoneal administration of PSK. In normal mice, the majority of thymus cells are large and the minority are small as demonstrated by analysis with a fluorescence activated cell sorter. In tumor-bearing mice, the number of large cells are decreased and the number of small cells are relatively increased. PSK prevented such a modulation in tumor-bearing mice.
Of 27 patients with hypoplastic anemia treated between 1971 and 1974 with male hormone and protein-assimilating hormone, 3 developed superior sagittal sinus thrombosis (SSST). The clinical symptoms and signs and angiographic findings of SST were characteristic enough to allow an early diagnosis. Signs related to SST were seizures, hemiplegia, facial palsy, stupor, and coma, with the most important prodrome and consistent subjective complaint being headache. Following discontinuation of the hormone therapy, neurological signs and symptoms related to SSST gradually subsided. In all cases, the hematological picture improved with discontinuation of the hormone therapies. It appears that administration of male hormone can be associated with the development of SSST. If neurological symptoms and signs of SSST appear, administration of the hormones should be discontinued.

To evaluate the operative mortality and morbidity of definitive intracranial microsurgical aneurysm obliteration as a function of timing of early operative intervention and as a function of clinical condition at the acute state, we retrospectively review 164 consecutive patients who underwent surgery within 72 hours following haemorrhage. The series was divided into four operation periods (0-6, 6-12, 12-24, 24-72 hours), and patients were graded according to five clinical conditions described by Hunt and Hess. The mortality of the individual clinical condition at each operation period was to great extent independent of the timing of operation, and there was a distinct correlation between the surgical results and the form of bleeding visualized by C.T. In poor condition (grade 3, 4, and 5) patients, satisfactory surgical results were obtained in patients in whom cisternal blood clots, intracerebral haematoma, and subdural haematoma had been shown by C.T. The optimum operation times for each group were suggested.

A total of 19 patients who had local or systemic infections with a variety of difficult-to-treat blood disorders were treated with cefoxitin (CFX). The following findings were obtained. 1. Fifteen out of 19 patients' responses were judged "excellent" or "good" with an overall cure rate of 78.9%. 2. As to the side effects of CFX, transient elevations in S-GOT, S-GPT were observed in 3 patients, urine protein in 2 patients, and hematuria in 1 patient. However, these abnormalities cannot be solely attributed to CFX because these patients were treated with either antitumor agents or aminoglycosides, and some had undergone blood transfusions. 3. CFX should be considered for the treatment of severe infections because it is well tolerated, has a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens and is highly resistant to beta-lactamases.
