Cerebral perfusion imaging with dual-tracer (Tc-99m and In-111) human albumin microspheres (HAM scintigraphy) was performed in 15 cases with unilateral occlusion of the internal carotid artery, for the diagnosis and evaluation of collateral circulation patterns. After injection of Tc-99m microspheres into one common carotid artery and In-111 HAMs into the other, two perfusion images, one for each carotid artery, were clearly differentiated by appropriate pulse-height discrimination. With this method, diagnosis of internal carotid artery occlusion was definitely made in eight patients, suspected in six, and missed in one. The collateral perfusion areas from the contralateral ICA and ipsilateral external carotid artery were well demonstrated by this method, and the scintigraphic results agreed well with the angiographic findings in all cases. Dual-tracer HAM scintigraphy is capable of adding information about collaterals at the capillary level to the anatomic information obtained by angiography.
From October, 1976, to February, 1980, eight children with coronary arterial lesions resulting from Kawasaki's disease underwent surgical treatment--aorta-coronary bypass, aorta-coronary bypass combined with right coronary aneurysmectomy, and aorta-coronary bypass combined with left ventricular aneurysmectomy. The autogenous saphenous vein was used for the bypass grafts. Selective angiography preformed 1 month after the operation revealed an early patency rate of 85%. Seven patients are now leading a normal school life, but one patient died suddenly during relatively strenuous exercise 3 years after the operation. Angiography performed in five patients 1 to 3 years after the operation and autopsy examination in one decreased patient revealed the late patency rate to be 56%. The relatively higher attrition rate of the grafts in the later stage might be ascribed to the smaller caliber of the coronary artery and saphenous vein, to possible inflammatory changes in both the graft and coronary arteries, or to unknown metabolic differences between children and adults.

The activities of two urea cycle enzymes, carbamyl phosphate synthetase-I and ornithine transcarbamylase, in mouse liver gradually decreased after transplantation of Ehrlich tumor cells into the subepidermal tissue, and reached values of 60 and 65% of those of control mice, respectively, on the 21st day. The decrease in enzyme activities was attributable to decreased amounts of enzyme proteins as determined by radial immunodiffusion. Total hepatic RNA was translated in the presence of 35S-methionine in a cell-free system prepared from rabbit reticulocytes. The products were isolated by immunoprecipitation and sodium dodecyl sulfate/polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Levels of translatable mRNAs for the two enzymes were measured in terms of the radioactivities incorporated into the enzyme polypeptides. The hepatic mRNA activities in the tumor-bearing mice were 35 and 35%, respectively, of those of control animals on the 7th day after the tumor transplantation, and 29 and 35%, respectively, on the 14th day. The results indicate that the decreases in amounts of the two urea cycle enzymes are substantially due to decreased levels of translatable mRNA.
The coronary arterial lesions of Kawasaki disease are characterized by multiple stenoses and aneurysms, which might lead to myocardial ischemia, myocardial infarction, mitral insufficiency due to ischemic papillary muscle dysfunction, ventricular aneurysm, etc. Eight children aged 6 to 13 years with Kawasaki disease underwent surgical treatments. These were coronary bypass surgery, coronary bypass surgery combined with right coronary aneurysmectomy and coronary bypass surgery combined with left ventricular aneurysmectomy. The postoperative course was smooth in all the patients. The selective angiography performed 1 month after the operation revealed the patency rate of 85% of the bypass grafts. However, 1 patient died suddenly during strenuous exercise 3 years after the surgery. Several points to be considered in the aortocoronary bypass in the patients with Kawasaki disease are discussed. These include the unknown fate of saphenous vein grafts and the possibility of higher incidences of graft failure in the growing children. Since the long-term postoperative results are as yet not fully understood, close follow-up of the patients treated by aortocoronary bypass surgery would be mandatory.

Twenty Syrian golden hamsters recieved weekly injections of pancreatic cancer inducing DHPN. Their Poly (U) specific serum RNase levels were significantly elevated when compared to the control levels. Following salt fractionation, Poly (U) specific activity was present in both the 40% and 50% salt saturated fractions. Tissue assays showed that Poly (U) specific RNase was present in both pancreas and liver tissue extract, although the liver tissue RNase had a different pH maximum than that of the serum RNase.
Penetration of Toxoplasma gondii tachyzoites was studied in vitro using murine erythroid cells at different stages of development. Toxoplasma gondii penetrated nucleated erythroblasts and macroreticulocytes from foetal mouse liver and the circulating erythrocytes of foetal, neonatal or severely anaemic adult mice. Immature reticulocytes were more susceptible to penetration than mature ones, indicating that some change in their membrane properties occurred during maturation. The present results confirmed our previous finding that the major erythrocyte membrane-specific proteins do not prevent erythrocyte penetration since these proteins are known to be present in the reticulocyte membrane.
