[Studies on the normal polarcardiogram using the posteroanterior axis as the polar axis (author's transl)].

Polarcardiograms using the posteroanterior axis as the polar axis were recorded in 112 cases of the clinically healthy subjects. QRS wave with small notch or slur both in front and behind of the main triangular configuration with narrow base were most frequently observed in the frontal magnitude ECG. T wave showed simple monophasic upright wave with the mildly sloping ascending limb and the relatively rapidly sloping descending limb. The magnitude of the maximum QRS vector and the maximum QRS vector time in frontal plane were very similar with those of the spatial QRS vector. The quantitative values obtained by the measurement of the polarcardiograms agreed well with those obtained by the vectorcardiograms reported by the various authors. Polarcardiography made possible not only to know the polar coordinates of the cardiac vector at any instant very easily, but also to express the time-related curve of the polar coordinates, which vary as a function of time, in easily understandable analogue pattern. QRS and T waves of the magnitude, the alpha-longitude and P-A latitude ECG in the normal subjects were classified into the several definite patterns.

[Studies on the reliability of the polarcardiographic records (author's transl)].

Reliability of the polarcardiogram obtained by the newly constructed polarcardiograph, in which the vector sum circuit applying absolute value operations were used for the computation of the magnitude curve, were examined in fifty normal subjects. There was no statistically significant difference between the means of the measured values of the polarcardiogram and of the corresponding polar components calculated from the three scalar ECG concerning all twenty items, namely spatial magnitude, magnitudes in each plane, each longitude and latitude at the time of the spatial maximum QRS and T vectors, except alpha-longitude. Highly significant positive correlations were observed between these two sets of values in all twenty items. Configurations of the pattern obtained by plotting the instantaneous polar components, which were calculated from the three scalar ECG, on the linear time scale were very similar with those of the polarcardiographic records. These findings showed that the records obtained by the newly constructed polarcardiograph were reliable.

Attempt at local administration of anticancer agents in the form of fat emulsion.

A fat emulsion when injected into tissue is scarcely taken up by the blood vascular system but is retained within the tissue over a relatively extended period, and is distributed slowly into the surrounding tissues and to the regional lymph nodes. Attempts were made to use this property of the emulsion in the local administration of anticancer agents in emulsion, both in experimental animals and in man. The concentrations of bleomycin in the tumor tissue of rats were significantly higher after the intratumoral injection of the emulsion form than when the drug was administered in the aqueous solution, either systemically or intratumorally. Experimental antitumor activity against this tumor was superior after the bleomycin emulsion, as well. In the clinical trials six of eight patients with either squamous cell carcinoma of skin or local recurrence of adenocarcinoma of the breast responded favorably to this treatment.

Minimal Thorotrast deposition in parapancreatic lymph nodes.

The characteristic roentgenologic features of Thorotrast deposition in the perihepatic and parapancreatic lymphatics are described. Minimal deposits of Thorotrast were seen in the liver and spleen on the abdominal radiograph in 6 patients who had no clinical symptoms. Inquiry into the patient's history invariably disclosed angiography for vascular surgery several years earlier. The typical configuration of the affected lymph node is an oval, heavy density with a long tail, resembling a tadpole or teardrop. Other irregular radiopacities in the same area, including linear ones, probably represent colloid deposition along the lymphatics. Roentgenologic differentiation of Thorotrast deposits from pancreas stones and calcified lymph nodes is discussed.

Newly constructed spatial circumference electrocardiograph.

Spatial circumference electrocardiograph which could compute the length of the spatial circumference of each vectorcardiographic loop and record the pattern of the increment of the vectorcardiographic are very easily and accurately on the bed side was constructed. CR differentiating circuits with three sets of the different time constant were used for the differentiations. Vector sum circuits applying absolute value operations reported by Imai and Nguyen Phuoc (1972) were used in this apparatus and the simplification of the consitution of the circuits and the excellent results were obtained. Examples of the spatial circumference ECG recorded in a normal subject and some pathologic conditions were demonstrated.

Studies on complement-fixation reaction in equine infectious anemia. II. Identification of complement-fixing inhibitors.

The substances responsible for inhibiting complement-fixation (CF) reaction of the late-stage serum of an equine infectious anemia (EIA)-infected horse were investigated. It was found that the IgG and IgG(T) classes in the late-stage serum were responsible for the CF inhibition. IgA could not be detected in partially purified IgG(T) by an immunodiffusion test using rabbit anti-human IgA serum. Other serum components could not be demonstrated in purified IgG by immunoelectrophoresis using rabbit anti-horse serum. The IgG class simultaneously showed CF and CF-inhibiting (CFI) activities, whereas the IgG(T) class showed only CFI activity. The IgG(T) class could exert CFI activity only when it had been reacted with the EIA antigen before addition of the reference CF serum and complement. In contrast, the IgG class converted the CF-active reference serum into a non-CF-reactive one irrespective of whether it was simultaneously reacted with the EIA antigen and the reference CF serum, whether it was added to the reaction mixture of the EIA antigen and the reference CF serum, or whether it was sensitized with the EIA antigen before addition of the reference CF serum. Inhibitory activities of the IgG and IgG(T) classes seemed to be different from each other in their reaction pattern as far as tested under our experimental conditions. Their CFI activities seemed to be specific for EIA, being negative in CFI activity in reaction with other antigens.

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE): isolation of a defective variant of measles virus from brain obtained at autopsy.

A cytopathic agent causing formation of syncytial giant cells was isolated by co-cultivation of human embryonic lung cells with brain cells obtained at autopsy from a patient with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. Measles specific intracellular immunofluorescence was detected in syncytial giant cells developed by the agent. Paramyxovirus-like nucleocapsids were observed by electron microscopy in nuclei of the syncytial giant cells. Measles specific immunofluorescence was also detected on the surface of unfixed syncytial giant cells. However, the synycytial giant cells did not produce either virions or hemogglutinin, and did not show hemadsorption of African green monkey red cells. Hence, the newly isolated agent seems to be a defective variant of measles virus, and was designated as the SSPE-"BIKEN" strain.
