An electrophoretically G-like hemoglobin variant, Hb Hoshida, was detected from a ten year old girl and her mother. No clinical and hematological abnormalities were seen in the individuals heterozygous for this mutant gene. Structural studies of this abnormal hemoglobin demonstrated a previously undescribed substitution of beta43 (CD-2) Glu leads to Gln. The proportion of the abnormal hemoglobin in hemolysate was 42.1 per cent. The hemoglobin revealed neither instabilities nor functional abnormalities.
A methanol-utilizing bacterium, Protaminobacter ruber, required cobalt ion or vitamin B12 as its growth factor, which could be replaced by succinate among various additions to the cobalt-deficient medium. The presence of adenosylcobalamin (adenosyl-B12)-dependent methylmalonyl-coenzyme A (CoA) mutase was demonstrated in the cell-free extracts of P. ruber. The specific activity of this mutase was not only fairly high in comparison with that reported with other organisms but also detected at a similar level throughout the cultivation period. The cell-free extracts of P. ruber grown on non-C1 compounds as a sole carbon and energy source also had methylmalonyl-CoA mutase activity. Furthermore, the extracts of this microorganism catalyzed the reactions from propionyl-CoA to succinyl-CoA and from alpha-ketoglutarate to alpha-hydroxyglutarate.

Polarcardiograms using right to left axis as the polar axis were recorded in 112 cases of the clinically healthy subjects. The wave forms of the polarcardiogram of the normal subjects were classified into the several difinite patterns. The quantitative values obtained by the measurement of the polarcardiograms agreed well with those obtained by the vectorcardiograms reported by the various authors. Polarcardiography has advantages not only to let us know the spatial polar coordinates of the cardiac vectors at any instant very easily and quickly, but also to give us the informations of the time-related continuous pattern of the polar components of the cardiac vectors very easily which are difficult to obtain by the conventional ECG and VCG.
The National Registry for subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) of Japan was established in 1976 at the Research Institute for Microbial Diseases, Osaka University, under the auspices of the Ministry of Health and Welfare. By March 1977, forty five clinically confirmed cases of SSPE were reported to the Registry, with onset of symptoms occurring between 1966 and 1976. Histories of measles were available in 42 of these cases. Thirty nine patients with known histories had measles prior to onset of SSPE and 3 had no history of measles illness. Twenty eight (71.7%) of the 39 patients had measles before the age of 2 years. All cases were 1 to 14 years old at the time of onset of SSPE and the mean interval between measles and SSPE was 6.1 years. One of the 3 cases with no history of measles was a recipient of measles killed vaccine, but no case of SSPE was reported among recipients of measles live, attenuated vaccine.

The QRS wave of the spatial magnitude electrocardiogram (ECG) was investigated in 86 cases of the ventricular septal defect (VSD). The relationship between the amplitude and the time interval of QRS wave of the spatial magnitude ECG and the various hemodynamic parameters obtained by the right heart catheterization and the defect area ascertained during the operations were evaluated.

With 15 cases of epilepsy as the subject, studies were made of the therapeutic effects of folic acid on psychiatric symptoms and clinical seizures. Folic acid proved effective for a part of chronic and prolonged psychiatric symptoms shown by epileptic patients and brought on slight improvement in hyperexcitability, aggressiveness, bad humor and slowness of psychomotor activities. Improvement in mood was also observed. However, incidence of clinical fits increased in three cases. Electroencephalograms showed the desynchronizing phenomenon following oral administration of folic acid. Appearance or increase of spikes was noted in six cases. The epileptic group showed significantly low folic acid level in both serum and spinal fluid compared with the non-epileptic group. When folic acid was administered orally to the epileptic group, the serum folic acid level increased easily but the folic acid level in spinal fluid hardly increased.
A strain of Actinomyces odontolyticus, originally isolated from human dental plaque, produced a non-dialyzable, trypsin-sensitive substance that was bactericidal for certain strains of bifidobacteria at 42 degrees C but not at 37 degrees C. Detectable quantities of the bacteriocin were not produced in liquid media. Experimentally useful yields were obtained by extraction from pour plate cultures of producer cells. At 42 degrees C, exponential killing did not occur until indicator cells had doubled at least once. At 37 degrees C, the bacteriocin effected a transient bacteriostasis. Partially purified concentrates were obtained by diethylaminoethyl-cellulose chromatography, and such material was not inactivated by ribonuclease, deoxyribonuclease, or lipase. Pronase, trypsin, and exposure to 100 degrees C for 20 min completely abolished activity. Inhibitory activity was considerably reduced by exposure to a pH of either 3 or 11. Treatment of producer cells with curing agents did not induce a high frequency of non-bacteriocinogenic cells. The odontolyticin was adsorbed by susceptible, as well as resistant, bacteria.
A methanol-utilizing bacterium, Protaminobacter ruber, produced a large amount of vitamin B(12). The compounds were isolated from the cells and identified as methylcobalamin (methyl-B(12)) and adenosylcobalamin (adenosyl-B(12)) by various tests. The variation in the form of B(12) during cultivation was examined by bioautography with cellulose acetate membrane electrophoresis. Methyl-B(12) and adenosyl-B(12) were the two main B(12) compounds produced in the various phases of bacterial growth. The ratio of the amount of methyl-B(12) to total B(12) compounds was higher during the earlier phases of growth. After the logarithmic phase, adenosyl-B(12) was the predominant form. The existence of N-methyltetrahydrofolate:homocysteine transmethylase and methyl-B(12):homocysteine transmethylase was demonstrated in cell-free extracts of Protaminobacter ruber. Methyl-B(12) in P. ruber seems to function mainly in the B(12)-dependent methionine synthetase system.
