Studies on live rubella vaccine. VI. Seroepidemiological surveillance and immunization of adolescents in high school.

The rubella seroimmunity status of a total of 1,204 students aged 12 to 19 in a junior and a senior high school in Osaka district was surveyed. Among these, 487 students (40.5%) were found to be seronegative (less than 1 : 8) by the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test. A total of 287 students were immunized with live rubella vaccine, Biken lot No.7233. This caused an increased titer in all except one of the 262 seronegative students, while among 25 students with an initial HI antibody titer of 1 : 8 it caused more than 4-fold increase in 20 and 2-fold increase in 5. The vaccine caused no clinical manifestations, such as fever, rash or arthralgia.

[Spinal cord tumor of children--a cured case of infantile spinal cord tumor and review of domestic literature (author's transl)].

Spinal cord tumor of children is a rare occurrence and infancy it is extremely rare. Experience with a 3-month-old female case of intraspinal extradural neurinoma was reported. This is the youngest reported case in the domestic literature. The tumor, which was solid and extended from the level of 11th thoracic vertebra to the /th lumbar vertebra, was successfully removed. Preoperative symptoms, such as sensory and motor disturbances of bilateral lower extremities and urinary and fecal incontinences, disappeared postoperatively. The patient is quite healthy 7 years after the operation. The domestic literature consisting of 73 cases of spinal cord tumor of children was reviewed and statistically observed. Histopathologically, teratoma and teratoid tumors were the major constituents. Neurinoma, which is a major entity in adult cases was observed only in 12 cases (16.4%). In infancy early diagnosis is often difficult due to absence of subjective complaints and, in about half of the reported cases, motor disturbance was the first noticed clinical sign. In the present case, the parents noticed crying of the baby on lifting up the limbs to change diaper and the presence of some sort of sensory disturbance was suggested. Thus in suspicious cases, diagnostic procedures such as myelography should be done in early stage and early operation should be undertaken.

Studies on live rubella vaccine. V. Quantitative aspects of interference between rubella, measles and mumps viruses in their trivalent vaccine.

Rubella vaccine combined with measles and mumps vaccines was administered in a single injection to children of 1 to 5 years of age. All three vaccines were serologically effective, and the clinical reactions caused by measles vaccine were considerably alleviated, when 6 x 10(3) PFU of rubella and 10(4) TCD50 per dose of mumps vaccines were combined with 5 x 10(4) TCD50 of measles vaccine. When a larger amount of mumps vaccine (3 x 10(5) TCD50/dose) was used, it caused interference with the rubella and measles viruses, i.e., the antibody response to rubella virus became poor and the incidence of clinical reactions to measles virus decreased. On the other hand, when 5 x 10(5) TCD50/dose of measles vaccine was combined with 10(4) TCD50/dose of mumps vaccine, the clinical reactions to measles virus were decreased but were almost the same as those induced by this vaccine alone.
