Polychlorinated biphenyl pollution from shipbuilding in Nagasaki Bay, Japan.

Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) pollution from shipbuilding in Nagasaki Bay, Japan, was discussed by determining PCB concentrations in sediment, in water, and in biological samples. PCBs were detected in all samples, in which much higher concentrations, more than 10 micrograms/g, were found in three sediment samples where located near the shipyard drains. In general, PCB concentrations in sediments and organisms tended to increase toward the inner part of this bay. PCB isomer and congener compositions in organisms as well as sediments were composed mainly of higher chlorinated biphenyls and almost similar to Kanechlor 500 and 600 products (chlorine content 54 and 60%, respectively) that have been used for ship paints. These results strongly suggest that the shipbuilding is primarily responsible for the PCB pollution in Nagasaki Bay. Bioaccumulation factors of PCBs were different among the organisms according to their trophic levels. This might be a result of the predominant PCB transfer through the food chain in organisms and the discharge of bioaccumulative PCBs as higher chlorinated biphenyls from shipyards. These observations imply that the PCB pollution from shipbuilding would continue for a long time due to the accumulative characteristics of PCBs used for ship paints and the further discharge by scraping the stale paints in shipyards.

New beta-lactam antibiotics, carpetimycins C and D.

Two new carbapenem antibiotics, carpetimycins C and D have been isolated from the culture broth of Streptomyces sp. KC-6643, which produced carpetimycins A and B. The structures of carpetimycins C and D have been determined to be (5R,6R)-3-[2-acetamidoethyl-(R)-sulfinyl]-6-(1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl) -7-oxo-1-azabicyclo[3.2.0]hept-2-ene-2-carboxylic acid and (5R,6R)-3-[2-acetamidoethyl-(R)-sulfinyl]-6-(1-hydroxysulfonyloxy-1 -methylethyl)-7-oxo-1-azabicyclo[3.2.0]hept-2-ene-2-carboxylic acid, respectively. Studies on the fermentation, isolation and physico-chemical properties of these antibiotics are also described.

[Fracture of the sella turcica--a case report and review of the literature].

The incidence of a fracture of the sella turcica is reported to be rare and the authors reported a case of a sellar fracture associated with several neurological and endocrinological complications. A 16-year-old boy was struck at the face and the forehead on the road in a motorcycle accident and was hospitalized in a confusional state. Neurological examinations showed dilatation of the both pupils, sluggish light reflex on both sides and bilateral oculomotor palsy but motor weakness or sensory disturbance was not present. On the tenth hospital day, he developed diabetes insipidus and endocrinological examinations disclosed the impairment of GH, LH and FSH reserves, too. Neuroradiological examinations disclosed fractures of bilateral frontal bones and fractures of the left optic canal and ethmoidal roof as well as a fracture of the sella turcica. On the 28th hospital day, he also developed CSF rhinorrhea and pneumocephalus. Surgical repair for the CSF rhinorrhea was performed. Fractures of the sella turcica were reviewed in 23 cases including our personal case and a special consideration regarding the mechanism of sellar fractures and their major complications was made. The authors stressed the early recognition of a fracture of the sella turcica in head injuries, which would suggest a severe hypothalamo-pituitary involvement or other neurological disorders.

[Anomalous ophthalmic artery-case reports and review of literature (author's transl)].

Case reports and review of literature were performed concerning anomalous or normal variant ophthalmic arteries discovered by angiography. In five cases, we recognized three types of the variation of the ophthalmic artery on serial magnification carotid angiograms. In the first type (case 1, 2), the middle meningeal artery originated from the ophthalmic artery. In the second type (case 3, 4) the ophthalmic artery originated from the middle meningeal artery. In the third type (case 5), double ophthalmic arteries originated from the cisternal portion and the cavernous portion of the internal carotid artery (ICA). The ophthalmic artery originating from the cavernous portion of the ICA entered the orbit through the superior orbital fissure and had a small branch to the foramen rotundum. In the first and second type, the stapedial artery was considered to play an important role in the formation of anomalous ophthalmic arteries. In regard to the third type, Lasjaunias called the ophthalmic artery from the cavernous portion of the ICA as the deep recurrent ophthalmic artery or the inferolateral trunk of the ICA. It's artery was the dorsal ophthalmic artery in a fetal period which had migrated caudally from the cisternal portion of the ICA to the cavernous portion. But Padget gave another explanation. She described that the inferolateral trunk of the ICA called by Lasjaunias was the primitive maxillary artery and the dorsal ophthalmic artery did not migrated to the cavernous portion. The origin of the ophthalmic artery originating from the cavernous portion of the ICA in the third type should be further analysed embryologically.
