In contrast to normal subjects diabetic patients and very low plasma ascorbic acid and significantly high (p less than 0.001) dehydroascorbic acid irrespective of age, sex, duration of the disease, type of treatment, and glycemic control. However, there was no significant difference between the mean leukocyte ascorbate concentrations of the two populations. The in vitro rates of dehydroascorbate reduction in the hemolysate and the erythrocyte reduced glutathione levels and the glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activities, which regulate the dehydroascorbate reduction, were similar in normal and diabetic subjects. The turnover of ascorbic acid was higher in the diabetics than that in the normal volunteers. Experiments with diabetic rats indicated that the increased turnover of ascorbic acid was probably due to increased oxidation of ascorbate to dehydroascorbate in tissue mitochondria. Ascorbic acid supplementation at a dose of 500 mg per day for a brief period of 15 days resulted in an increase in the plasma ascorbate level temporarily, but it did not lower the blood glucose level of the diabetic patients.
The temperature of 104 periodontal pockets of various depths was measured before institution of any preventive or curative therapy. A tendency to a rise in pocket temperature due to increased pocket depth was noted. However, statistically no linear correlation was observed between the temperature and the depth of the periodontal pockets. The possibility of using temperature measurements as a diagnostic and prognostic aid in periodontal disease has been discussed.

A double-blind controlled trial was carried out in 267 patients with moderate to severe pain following episiotomy to compare the pain relief provided over a 6-hour period by a single oral dose of 500 mg dipyrone, 500 mg aspirin or placebo. The results showed that dipyrone and aspirin were both significantly superior to placebo. Pain relief with dipyrone was already apparent at 30 minutes after drug intake, and was of significantly longer duration than that of aspirin. No side-effects were reported.

The interproximal sulcular temperatures of the central, cuspid and the first molar regions of both jaws of 28 adults were recorded with a thermistor probe. The mean sulcular temperatures were 1.80 to 2.90 degrees C lower than the mean sublingual temperature. In both jaws the lowest temperature was recorded in the anterior region and the highest in the molar region. The temperature increased from the anterior to the posterior region on both buccal and lingual sides of both arches. The sulcular temperatures of the lower arches were higher than those of the upper arches. Further, analyses of the data of each individual subject showed interesting differences between the male and the female subjects. This work suggests that studies on dental plaque and on the growth and metabolism of microorganisms of the gingival sulci should consider the lower temperature of the gingival sulci and the regional temperature differences within the oral cavity.
Antifungal action of di- and triacetyl derivatives of mycobacillin is not antagonised by cholesterol or lecithin which antagonise the action of its heptamethyl derivative. Considering the reactive groups of mycobacillin, the antagonism may involve the tyrosine hydroxyl groups of the antibiotic and the 3-hydroxyl group of cholesterol of the oleic acid component of lecithin having unsaturation at the 9:10 position with cis-configuration.
