Serum thyroglobulin concentration in normal pregnancy.

We measured the levels of serum thyroglobulin (Tg) in 52 pregnant females at various stages and compared them with those of 15 age-matched nonpregnant females. Serum Tg was measured by a solid-phase immunoradiometric assay. In pregnant females, mean serum Tg levels at the first, second, early third, and late third trimesters were 8.4 (range; 1.3-18.0), 9.2 (1.7-25.6), 10.1 (1.8-22.8), and 12.1 ng/ml (5.3-25.2), respectively. The statistical comparison was made after logarithmic transformation of the data. The mean value only at the late third trimester was significantly higher than that of controls (mean; 6.0 ng/ml, range; 1.5-23.6), but each value was within the normal range. Although serum Tg levels have been reported to be high at the end of pregnancy, our results indicate that the Tg levels in females could be clinically interpreted without regard to the coexistence of pregnancy.

[Growth and sexual maturation of the male house musk shrew (Suncus murinus)].

The sexual maturation in the male house musk shrew, Suncus murinus, was investigated by weighing gonads, accessory sexual organs and various other organs, and measuring testosterone concentrations in the plasma from birth to 50 days of age. The histological and histochemical studies of the testis were also carried out. Testicular weight increased markedly from 10 days of age. On 15 days of age, the activity of delta 5-3 beta-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (HSD) was detected in Leydig cells. In accordance with an increase of HSD activity, the concentrations of plasma testosterone raised rapidly from 15 days of age and reached a peak on Day 30. Growth of prostate glands and seminal vesicles showed a sigmoidal pattern and their significant growth began from Day 25. Sperms were detected first in the seminiferous tubules on Day 28, and most tubules were filled with many sperms on Day 33. From these results, the beginning of sexual maturation, i.e. puberty, of the male shrew is considered to be around Day 25. The weight gain of testes, accessory sexual organs and the body became slower on Day 40. The male animal of Day 40 could mate and impregnate the female. Therefore, the male shrew seems to attain to the sexual maturity between days 35 and 40.

Giant hyperplasiogenous polyp of the stomach simulating malignant polyp.

A surgical case of giant hyperplasiogenous polyp of the stomach with unusual radiological and pathological findings is presented. Radiological and endoscopical examinations revealed characteristic papillary (villous) features simulating either true adenoma or malignant polyp of the antrum. Complete serial sections from the resected stomach disclosed no malignant area anywhere in and out of the polyp. The pathomorphological nature and radiological characteristics of this rare lesion are discussed.

In vitro antibacterial activity and beta-lactamase stability of cefodizime, a new cephalosporin antibiotic.

The in vitro activity and beta-lactamase stability of cefodizime (HR 221), a new cephalosporin, were compared with those of other cephem antibiotics. HR 221 was highly active against Gram-negative bacteria. The compound inhibited growth of all tested Haemophilus influenzae strains at 0.10 microgram/ml and showed strong activity even against penicillin-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains, but it was less effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa than the other antibiotics tested. Against Gram-positive bacteria, HR 221 showed 100% inhibition of growth of Streptococcus pneumoniae at 0.39 microgram/ml, and it was slightly less active against Staphylococcus aureus (MIC90:12.5 micrograms/ml) than other antibiotics such as cefotaxime (CTX). The bactericidal activity of HR 221 against E. coli was dose-related and comparable to that of CTX, cefoperazone and latamoxef. The bactericidal activity of the compound at medium concentrations simulating human serum levels was higher than that of CTX and cefmetazole, and no cell regrowth was noted after beta-lactamase-induced inactivation of the compound. HR 221 was stable to most drug-inactivating enzyme preparations from various bacterial species.

In vivo antibacterial activity of cefodizime, a new cephalosporin antibiotic.

The in vivo activity of cefodizime (HR 221) was compared with that of cefotaxime (CTX), cefmenoxime, latamoxef, cefazolin and cefmetazole (CMZ). The protective effects of HR 221 on experimental infections in mice caused by Staphylococcus aureus Smith, Escherichia coli C-11, Proteus vulgaris GN-76 and Serratia marcescens No. 2 were directly related to its in vitro activity against these strains. In contrast, the compound showed the smallest ED50 values, among the 5 antibiotics tested (not including CMZ), for Klebsiella pneumoniae 3K-25 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa PI 67 against which it had relatively low in vitro activity, and its ED50 for Citrobacter freundii GN-346 was as small as 1.821 mg/mouse in spite of its MIC of greater than 100 micrograms/ml. HR 221 exerted potent bactericidal activity against Streptococcus pneumoniae Sp-1 inoculated into the mouse lung; the duration of action was prolonged. When tested against the E. coli Ec-89 infection induced in the rat uterus, the activity of HR 221 given to rats once daily was equal to that of CTX or CMZ given at the same dose twice daily.

Acute anterior and posterior ischemic optic neuropathy.

Criteria for diagnosis of acute ischemic optic neuropathy (acute ION) were proposed: acute ION was divided into two groups, ie, acute anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (acute AION) and acute posterior ischemic optic neuropathy (acute PION). Acute AION is characterized by pale or sometimes hyperemic papilledema in the early stage, followed by postneuritic optic atrophy. In contrast, acute PION shows normal optic disk in the early stage followed by development of simple optic atrophy. We analyzed 31 eyes of 24 cases with acute AION and 20 eyes of 18 cases with acute PION. The diagnostic criteria and clinical findings in both types were compared. Through analyses of the etiological factors, acute PION was thought to be acute retrobulbar optic neuritis caused by ischemic changes in the optic nerve. Laboratory examinations of serum lipids, hemostatic and fibrinolytic activities in cases of acute ION did not reveal significant differences from the findings in cases with retinal vein occlusion and diabetic retinopathy. In the early stage of acute ION, steroid therapy gave rise to some improvement of the visual function but showed no effect in the late stage of the disease.
