[A case report of pedunculated hepatoma with very rare remote metastases after the resection].

A 44-year-old woman presented with a tumorous mass on the right hypochondrium, however, no clear tumor was detected. One year later she was found to have an abdominal tumor. Upon surgery, the abdominal tumor was identified as a pedunculated hepatoma arising from the right hepatic lobe and was resected radically. Two years later, the hepatoma recurred as very rare remote metastases to the lung, brain and gingiva, and the patient died of respiratory failure. Autopsy showed no local recurrence in the liver, but remote metastases were present in the lung, brain and lymph nodes. The gingival tumor had disappeared following irradiation therapy.

[Chronic renal dysfunction in workers exposed to cadmium oxide fume. Medical examinations of welders using cadmium containing silver solder].

Workers, who had been exposed to cadmium oxide fume, i.e., engaged in welding work with cadmium containing silver solder in an automobile parts manufacturing factory, were examined in 1975. Twenty two male welders were 22 to 55 years old and exposed to cadmium for periods ranging from 7 months to 23 years. Excreted urinary cadmium levels varied from 5.7 micrograms to 184.9 micrograms per day, and these values were useful indices of most recent exposures in workshop environments. The examinees were divided into three groups according to excreted urinary cadmium levels: five of them in high, eleven in middle, and six in low group, respectively. Workers in high-excretion group complained of considerable subjective symptoms and their urinary protein showed a remarkable increase, compared to middle- and low-excretion groups, and the electrophoretic pattern of urinary proteins showed preponderance of globulins. Urinary calcium and beta 2-microglobulin in the high-excretion group showed a remarkable increase. In all examinees, urinary phosphate, calcium, and beta 2-microglobulin were significantly correlated with urinary excreted cadmium. Furthermore, in the high-excretion group showed a considerable increase of serum creatinine values and reduction of creatinine clearance, and percent tubular reabsorption of phosphate, calcium and beta 2-microglobulin decreased. In all examinees, creatinine clearance and percent tubular reabsorption of both phosphate and calcium were significantly negatively correlated with urinary cadmium excretion. Therefore, five high-excretion workers showed evidence of chronic renal tubular dysfunction and one of these was particularly recognized as having remarkable renal damage. The possibility to affirm the effects of exposure to cadmium was suggested on hematological findings related to anemia. Liver function abnormalities were not recognized. A slight reduction of the respiratory function was found in one worker of the high-excretion group, but radiological examination of chest showed no abnormalities in all examinees.

Independent effect of a mixed-beam regimen of fast neutrons and gamma rays on a murine fibrosarcoma.

Biological effectiveness of a mixed-beam regimen of fast neutrons and photons was studied in an animal tumor system. NFSa , a spontaneous fibrosarcoma in a C3H mouse, was transplanted in the right hind legs of syngeneic male mice and locally irradiated with a single dose or five daily doses. Tumor control experiments showed that five gamma-ray doses increased TCD50 values by 20 Gy and produced a shallower slope on the dose-response curve compared to that after a single fraction. Fractionated neutron doses also increased the TCD50 value by 9 Gy without changing the slope of the dose-response curve. A mixed-beam regimen of N-gamma-gamma-gamma-N resulted in an independent effect on the tumor. Second, tumor cell survival was examined by the lung colony assay. Nembutal anesthesia reduced the tumor oxic cell fraction, resulting in a single component dose-response curve after a single gamma ray. Five fractionated doses of gamma rays increased both D0 and extrapolation number while those of fast neutrons increased only extrapolation number. The D0 and extrapolation number of the mixed-beam regimen were again identical to those values assuming that the mixed-beam effect was independent. RBEs obtained from cell survival were fairly close to those from TCD50 assays except single-dose experiments.

Isolation and nucleotide sequence of a partial cDNA clone for bovine opsin.

Bovine cDNAs were cloned by using a mixture of 18-base-long synthetic deoxyribonucleotides as a hybridization probe. The longest cDNA clone (pBO-1) contained an 811-bp insert that included the 434 bp of the coding region corresponding to the C-terminal 144 amino acid residues of opsin peptide and the 377 bp of the 3'-untranslated region. The size of opsin mRNA was determined as 23 S by Northern blot hybridization. Bovine liver DNA gave rise to a single band of 2.8 kb, 1.1 kb and 7.9 kb each with Eco RI, Hind III and Bam HI, respectively, by Southern blot hybridization with pBO-1 as probe. Therefore, bovine opsin gene may occur once per haploid genome.

A clustering outbreak of hand, foot, and mouth disease caused by Coxsackie virus A10.

A clustering outbreak of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) occurred from July, 1981 to January, 1982 in Matsue City and Gotsu City, Shimane Prefecture. Thirty-seven patients with clinical HFMD were virologically and serologically examined, and Coxsackie virus A10 (CA10) was isolated in 18 patients from vesicles (7/16), throat-swabs (9/31) and feces (6/7). During the period, no CA16 or enterovirus 71 were isolated from HFMD patients or from other diseases such as pharyngitis, febrile diseases, and aseptic meningitis. Serological diagnosis was performed employing an African green monkey kidney cell (AG-1)-adapted CA10 which demonstrated cytopathogenic effects on the cells. Paired sera from seven patients including three cases in which isolation failed showed a significant increase of neutralizing antibody titer against CA10. Finally, an etiological diagnosis was made in 21 out of 37 patients with clinical HFMD. This is the first report of a clustering outbreak of HFMD caused by CA10 in Japan.

[Precocious production of müllerian inhibitor by the fetal rabbit testis].

The production of müllerian inhibitor (or anti-müllerian hormone) by the testes of the Rabbit fetus was studied in vitro by co-culturing them with castrated genital tracts from 14.5 day old female Rat fetuses for three days. Under these conditions testes from 14 day old Rabbit fetuses were inactive. The testes from 15, 16 and 17 day old fetuses in which seminiferous cords are forming, had anti-müllerian activity, the older the stronger. In vivo this activity does not prevent the Müllerian ducts from growing in male Rabbits as well as in females until near to day 20; in vitro the fetal Rat ducts also grew in length despite the testicular anti-müllerian activity.
