In order to examine effects of PSK (polysaccharide Kureha) on laryngeal cancer, clinical results of 28 patients treated by PSK were compared with those of 31 of the historical control group. Three months after treatments, the PSK group showed a higher cumulative survival rate and better results in immunological parameters such as counts of peripheral lymphocyte, PPD and PHA skin reaction. However, these differences between the PSK group and the control group were not significant statistically, except peripheral leucocyte counts. The side effect was found in one patient who complained of stomach discomfort after applicating PSK.

A 7-year-old girl with a 3-year history of intermittent bouts of abdominal pain and jaundice underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography, which revealed an anomalous junction of the pancreatico-biliary ductal system (bile duct dilatation being virtually non-existent). These abdominal symptoms being considered to be attributable to the anomaly, resection of choledochus followed by hepatico-duodenostomy was performed. Now, one and a half years after operation, the patient is entirely asymptomatic. The legitimacy of "common channel syndrome" as an independent pathologic entity was proposed and the necessity of surgical treatment in its successful management was stressed.
We have investigated the hemodynamic mechanisms of delay phenomenon of various types of deltopectoral flaps and optimal time for transfer after delay operation using the local clearance method of Xenon-133. Characteristic differences were observed in recovery patterns of the distal blood flow among five types of delay procedure the results obtained are reported. In Group 1 (U-shaped, raised deltopectoral flap), two types of recovery patterns (fast and slow) were obtained. In cases of faster recovery, the optimal transfer time after delay is considered to be almost 10 days. In cases of slow recover in groups I and II (U-shaped, raised deltoid flap), the optimal time for transfer is thought to be 2 to 3 weeks. In group III (deltopectoral flap lined with a split-skin graft) and group IV (tubed, raised deltopectoral flap), a faster recovery pattern was observed than in groups I and II, and the optimum transfer time is considered to be about 7 to 14 days after delay operation. Accordingly, the use of groups III and IV would be highly recommended instead of group I. In group V (bipedicled, raised deltopectoral flap), the time of lateral incision was found to be critical.
Basic experiments of methane fermentation of livestock excreta have been reported by many investigators, yet there has been no report of experiments of methane fermentation of experimental animal feces. We considered that it would be feasible to gasiby experimental animal feces by methane fermentation. In this report, methane gas fermentation of rat feces is studied. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Methane fermentation of rat feces yielded, under the conditions described, 220-4231 of gas per kg of organic matter. 2. Decomposition ratio of BOD removal volume in organic matter was 50-60% when the fermentation condition was optimum. 3. The volume of gas from BOD removal volume in organic matter was 500-600ml/g. 4 Methane gas contents in the gas generated from the feces ranged from about 55-60%. 5. COD removal ratio was above 80%, and BOD removal ratio above 90%. From these data, the authors conclude that under the optimum conditions, described sufficient methane gas can be obtained from rat feces by methane fermentation.

Amino acid preparations for intravenous infusion are indispensable materials in parenteral nutrition. We have surveyed the progress and problems related to such preparations. In recent years, the necessity of various amino acid preparations suitable for different morbid state and/or ages has been the subject of much interest. In practice, several new amino acid preparations for specific uses have been proposed.
The etiologic relationship between disturbances in metabolism of amino acids and amines and hepatic coma was investigated by examining the effects of diets containing various mixtures of amino acids on brain amine metabolism in rats with a portacaval shunt, using a method for simultaneous analysis of amino acids and amines. Rats with a portacaval shunt were fed on four different amino acid compositions with increased amounts of various amino acids suspected to be etiologically related to hepatic coma, such as methionine, phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan. The animals were killed 4 weeks after operation. During the experimental period, these animals did not become comatose, but exhibited various behavioral abnormalities. Marked increase in the plasma and brain levels of the augmented amino acids, especially methionine and tyrosine, were observed in rats with a portacaval shunt. Brain noradrenaline, dopamine, and serotonin levels were significantly decreased when the brain tyrosine level was increased. These results indicate that in rats with a portacaval shunt the dietary levels of amino acids greatly influence the brain levels of both amino acids and transmitter amines.

By various mental status rating methods, 363 aged residents at a nursing home (aged 80 years on the average) were previously evaluated with regard to chronic brain syndrome (CBS), and now at two and four years thereafter, the relation between mortality and the degree of CBS was statistically tested. The results showed that the severer the CBS, the higher the mortality, with significant difference. In 136 autopsy cases, the primary cause of death was investigated. The results showed no significant difference in the cause of death, either between dementia and non-dementia groups or between groups of mild, moderate and severe CBS.
