[Effect of ACTH on plasma renin activity, aldosterone level and deoxycorticosterone level in humans (author's transl)].

Plasma aldosterone level (PAL) and deoxycorticosterone level (PDL) were determined in 5 subjects of normal sodium intake and 5 subjects of low sodium intake after the intramuscular administrations of ACTH (Upjohn, Cortrosyn) 40 IU, using radioligand methods. PAL and PDL reached their peaks at one hour after the administrations of ACTH, and then decreased in their normal ranges. Pretreated with the oral administrations of Dexamethasone 2 mg/day for 2 days, these subjects had, when ACTH were injected, such a similiar pattern in PAL and PDL as the peak of one hour and the consecutive falling without the pretreating of Dexamethasone. PAL and PDL of these subjects were not different between normal sodium intake and low sodium intake during the course of the experiment.

Significance of echocardiographic evaluation on surgery to mitral stenosis.

1) Diastolic descent rate (DDR) of the anterior mitral leaflet improved after the surgery. However, this improvement was not modified with a) atrial fibrillation b) damages of the subvalvular supporting tissue c) valvular calcification d) the method of the operation, namely the open or closed commissurotomy. 2) DDR was fairly well correlated with the mitral orifice area, the cardiac output and the pressure gradient across the mitral valve. Therefore, the echocardiographic diagnosis and the follow up evaluation of the mitral stenosis after the surgery were thought to be very reliable, considering the accuracy of this diagnosis as disclosed in this study. The contributory effect to DDR was discussed.

Sorbistin, a new aminoglycoside antibiotic complex of bacterial origin. III. Structure determination.

The structures of sorbistins A1, A2, B, C and D have been determined including stereo-chemistry. Sorbistins A1, A2 and B are composed of a 4-acyl-amino-4-deoxy-D-glucose and 1,4-diamino-1,4-dideoxy-D-sorbitol, the latter compound being hitherto undescribed in literature. Sorbistins C and D have the same aglycone of 1,4-diamino-1,4-dideoxy-D-sorbitol, which is linked with D-glucose and 4-amino-4-deoxy-D-glucose, respectively, through a glycosidic bond.
