The present study investigated the effects of mazindol on the metabolic abnormalities of ventromedial hypothalamic-lesioned (VMH) rats. About 200 g female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into VMH and sham-operated rats. Two weeks later the feeding of a mazindol-containing diet (50 mg/kg) was started in half of each group. Eight weeks after mazindol treatment, rats were sacrificed, and various parameters were determined. Food intake was measured between the 4th and 5th week. In VMH-lesioned rats, mazindol decreased food intake remarkably and restored body weight, Lee Index, organ weights (liver, parametrial fat pad and lung), serum insulin, serum lipids (cholesterol, triglyceride, phospholipid and free fatty acids), serum GOT GPT, total lipid in the liver and findings of liver history to normal. Mazindol did not change these parameters, except for serum triglyceride, in sham-operated rats and had no effect on food intake. The results suggested that normalization of these abnormalities in VMH-lesioned rats depends mainly on the reduction of food intake due to overresponse to mazindol by VMH lesions.
Collagens of the ligamentum teres of the femur and the hip joint capsule of 14 patients with congenital dislocation of the hip (CDH) were studied biochemically. Collagen was a major component of these tissues. Solubility of collagen was reversely related to age except in two cases. Collagen of both ligamentum teres of the femur and hip joint capsule was composed of type I, III and V collagens except in three cases. In these three cases with nevus or general joint laxity, two additional collagenous components were also found. The ratios of type III collagen to type I collagen were increased in CDH except in one case with short stature. These abnormalities of collagen metabolism could be the underlying cause of CDH and other clinical symptoms in these patients.

The structures of the third major type of oligosialyloligosaccharides obtained by alkali-borohydride treatment of polysialoglycoproteins of the unfertilized eggs of rainbow trout have been determined to be: alpha-L-fucosyl-(1----3)-beta-N-acetyl-D-galactosaminyl-(1----3)-beta-D- galactosyl-(1----4)-beta-D-galactosyl-(1----3)-[[(----8)-alpha-N- glycolylneuraminyl-(2----)]n-(----6)]-N-acetyl-D-galactosaminitol with n = 1 to 4. The proportion of the fucose-containing units in 3 major carbohydrate units present in fish egg polysialoglycoproteins was found to be highly species-specific and only 6% in the eggs of rainbow trout.

Based on the follow-up evaluation of 350 patients in whom lumbar disc herniation was treated by anterior discectomy and interbody fusion from 1955 to 1982, 94.3% of the patients obtained bony union and justified the principle of interbody stabilization of the spine. The normalization of the myelographic pattern observed after surgery indicates that sufficient nerve decompression can be obtained by this procedure. The good clinical results may be attributed to the restoration of disc height and to the correction of spinal alignment. The good results observed in long-term follow-up evaluation of 223 patients and the fact that most of the patients resumed their former work after surgery provide further testimony of the value of interbody fusion. The procedure is indicated in young adults, physical laborers with low back pain and sciatica, and patients with spinal instability.
The present paper reports studies on the change in the angioarchitecture of the glomeruli in induced hypertensive pregnancy in rabbits. Experimental toxemia of pregnancy in late pregnancy in rabbits was induced by constriction of the aorta below the renal arteries, followed by estradiol administration. The results are as follows: 1) Constriction of the aorta in the pregnant rabbits on the 21st day of gestation significantly elevated the blood pressure and resulted in intrauterine growth retardation in 88.9% of the living fetuses. 2) When the pregnant rabbits underwent constriction of the aorta and estradiol treatment, all the fetuses were in a state of intra-uterine death. 3) The transmission electron microscopic findings of the glomeruli revealed swelling of endothelial cells with vacuolization and vacuolated mesangial cells. 4) The angioarchitecture of the glomeruli was observed by scanning electron microscopy. The enlargement of the endothelial cells was found to reduce the size of cavities of vessels.
Erythematous, scaling patches over the face, torso, and extremities developed in a 2-month-old female infant. The facial lesions enlarged and became confluent, while the torso and leg lesions enlarged and assumed an annular configuration. Spores of Pityrosporum ovale and Pityrosporum orbiculare were found in large numbers in potassium hydroxide preparations from these lesions, a finding confirmed by culture. Clotrimazole ointment was applied, and the lesions resolved within one week, leaving depigmentation. The findings in this case and those of erythema gyratum atrophicans transiens neonatale resembled each other except for the demonstration of Pityrosporum spores. We assume that the disorder in our patient may represent superficial gyrate erythema (erythema annulare centrifugum) induced by Pityrosporum spores.
For the purpose of monitoring spinal cord function, evoked spinal cord potential was observed by recording electrodes in the subarachnoid space at the level of the conus medullaris and stimuli delivered to the rostral spinal cord from the epidural space. A specially designed, flexible tube-type electrode was used for both recording and stimulating. The spinal cord evoked potential consisted of an initial spike followed by polyphasic waves. The peak amplitude change was considered to be the main indicator of events that would potentially be hazardous to spinal cord function. Two hundred and twenty-nine operations were monitored by the recording electrode. Six of the patients experienced postoperative neurologic complications. During operation, the peak amplitudes of the evoked potentials diminished to less than 50% of the control values. Simultaneous monitoring of evoked potential revealed that this method was more sensitive than the wake-up test. No complications resulted from the application of this method. Thus, monitoring is a sufficiently sensitive, safe, and reliable method to be useful during aggressive surgery in the spine and spinal cord.
