Potential aldehyde groups of several monosaccharides and oligosaccharides were coupled with 2-aminopyridine by reductive amination with sodium cyanoborohydride. The product was isolated by adsorption on a Dowex 50 (H+) column, followed by washing, elution with aqueous ammonia and evaporation. The specimen was analyzed by paper electrophoresis at pH 5.0. Each sugar derivative gave a single spot in addition to one corresponding to excess 2-amino-pyridine when the paper was scanned under a UV lamp. The migration rates of these fluorescent sugars were related to their molecular weights and were independent of their linkage points and anomeric configurations. The reducing end sugar units of oligosaccharide derivatives could be identified by gas-liquid chromatography after hydrolysis of the 2-aminopyridine derivatives of the oligosaccharides.
A 6 A resolution electron density map has been calculated for a bacterial lysozyme produced by Streptomyces erythraeus. This lysozyme differs from the vertebrate lysozyme in its size, amino acid composition, and specificity. The structure was determined by the method of isomorphous replacement. Three heavy atom derivatives were obtained by soaking crystals of the lysozyme in HgCl2, K2PtCl4, and UO2(NO3)26H2O. The resulting electron density map clearly shows the molecular boundary. The molecule is ellipsoidal in shape with average dimensions 50 A X 35 A X 35 A. High resolution analysis and sequence analysis of the molecule are in progress.
The vagus nerve was examined electromyographically for effect on the abomasal movement in adult female goats subjected to dorsal or truncal vagotomy. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1. After dorsal vagotomy, the discharge interval prolonged slightly and the propagation velocity decreased. 2. After truncal vagotomy, the propagation velocity did not show a remarkable change except that the discharge interval showed a tendency to prolong slightly. 3. Neither dysrhythmia nor antiperistaltic discharge was seen after dorsal or truncal vagotomy. 4. The movement of the reticulum showed a tendency to be affected with temperature after dorsal vagotomy. It was not recorded after truncal vagotomy. The goats vagotomized dorsally showed an increase in body weight and decrease in volume of feces accompanied with repeated bloat. The goats vagotomized truncally died of acute frothy bloat 2-10 days after operation. Therefore, it was suggested that truncal vagotomy might have exerted a greater effection all the stomach of the ruminant than dorsal vagotomy, which reduced the movement of rumen more remarkably than the movement of the abomasum.

The effects of prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF2alpha) on egg transport and vaginal egg recovery were examined in rabbits. Little disturbance of egg transport was induced by an injection of 2 or 5 mg/kg of PGF2alpha 12 hours after mating. A remarkable disturbance of egg transport was seen when 5 mg/kg were injected 22 hours after mating. The administration of PGF2alpha24 hours after mating led to maximal vaginal egg recovery: 48.4% and 54.8% of eggs were recovered by 51 hours after treatment, and implantation rates were 3.2% and 6.5% after treatment with 2 and 5 mg/kg, respectively. The earliest eggs were recovered vaginally 3 hours after administration of PGF2alpha at 24, 36, 48, or 96 hours after mating. The recovery of slightly bloody washing fluids at the first and second vaginal washings in animals treated 24 or 36 hours after mating appears to indicate that severe uterine contractions were induced by PGF2alpha.
A species of lysozyme (SE lysozyme) was purified from culture filtrate of Streptomyces erythraeus. The enzyme has a molecular weight of 18,500 as determined by ultracentrifugation. Its isoelectric point is 9.5, and it shows optimal activity at pH 4.0 with an optimal ionic strength of 0.1. Investigation of the substrate specificity showed SE lysozyme to be an N-acetyl-muramidase. The simplest product in the digest of cell walls of Micrococcus lysodeikticus was identified as a disaccharide, [GlcNAcbeta(1 leads to 4) MurNAc]. While S. aureus as well as M. lysodeikticus was lysed by this lysozyme, chitin and its derivatives were not.

Data obtained from 423 individuals were analyzed for mode of inheritance of extra triradii on palmar interdigital area II and IV separately, and in combination. It indicates that a single dominant allele A for extra triradius in the area II, and an allele D in the area IV, may be responsible for the presence of the patterns in the respective area, with 75 to 80 per cent penetrance. There are numbers of individuals in which extra triradii are present in both interdigital areas II and IV. The mode of inheritance has been estimated from the data obtained and was found to have co-dominant alleles A and D for the presence in their respective areas. Further analysis revealed the existence of three alleles. A and D for presence, and 0 for absence. The alleles A and D are co-dominant, if combined in the genotype AD, but either allele is dominant in heterozygous combination with 0.
Enterobacter species, in recent years, have been divided into E aerogenes, E hafniae, E liquefaciens, and E cloacae. Early reviews of neonatal meningitis include some cases due to Klebsiella-Aerobacter,(1) and recent reviews(2,3) include Enterobacter which did not divide them into species of Enterobacter. Reported here is a case of neonatal meningitis due to a gram-negative organism, Enterobacter cloacae.
For systematization of the correlation between the chemical structures of solutes and retention behaviour in liquid column chromatography, the retention volumes of 43 modified steroids on silica and chemically bonded reversed-phase columns were examined using various binary solvent systems. Retention parameters for the functional groups of the steroids were calculated according to Martin's additive rule. By comparing these values obtained on normal and reversed-phase columns, characteristic features of both packings with regard to solute structures and the solvent systems were elaborated.
Samples of serum from patients with ocular manifestation of Behçet's disease of various types were analyzed using acid phosphatase and beta-glucuronidase as lysosomal marker enzymes, in comparison to those from control patients with myopia, retinal detachment, and uveitis of unknown etiology. The lysosomal enzyme activities in Behçet's disease, especially in the attack phase, were found to be higher than those of the controls. In the sera of two patients with Behçet's disease, the activities in the attack phase were slightly higher than in the remission phase. It was suggested that the ocular symptoms in Behçet's disease might represent exacerbation better than other symptoms, in view of the high lysosomal enzyme activities in the attack phase, as classified by ocular symptoms alone.
