Tiny papillary tumors of the prostatic urethra in and around the verumontanum were demonstrated by urethroscopy in 21 patients who presented with hematuria. Histopathologic study revealed evagination of prostatic glands with polypoid, papillary and angiectatic patterns in varying degrees. We suggest that these lesions may be called prostatic caruncles because of their close similarity to female urethral caruncles. The mild inflammatory changes noted in our patients were considered secondary reactions to the local circulatory disturbance and erosion.
A comparative study was made by the double-blind technique in order to make clear the usefulness of pivmecillinam in the treatment of intractable complicated urinary-tract infections using amoxicillin as a reference drug. Pivmecillinam was given in dosage of 400 mg (potency) per day which was one-fifth the dose of amoxicillin 2,000 mg (potency) per day. In global judgement, pivmecillinam was found superior to amoxicillin. It showed a "significant" superiority over amoxicillin for the treatment of, among others, the urinary-tract infections after prostatectomy, which are intractable diseases. When evaluated by symptoms, pivmecillinam improved bacteriuria "significantly" better than amoxicillin. When seen by causative organisms, the pivmecillinam treatment was "significantly" superior to the amoxicillin treatment against E. coli infections. Pivmecillinam was active against amoxicillin-resistant E. coli. Incidence of adverse reactions was less frequent with pivmecillinam than with amoxicillin. These results indicate that pivmecillinam is a drug of high usefulness for the treatment of intractable complicated urinary-tract infections when evaluated using amoxicillin as a reference drug.

Samples of subretinal fluid (SRF) from patients with primary rhegmatogeneous retinal detachment of various duration were studied using standard enzymologic techniques. The protein content in SRF increased with the duration of detachment. The activities of lysosomal enzymes in SRF, which were acid phosphatase, beta-glucuronidase, and cathepsin D, also increased with the duration of detachment. Especially cathepsin D, which was not detected in serum, was present in SRF. The activity of a nonlysosomal enzyme, i. e., lactic dehydrogenase, which was used as a marker of cell disruption and of serum transudation was the same as that of serum. Because lysosomal enzymes are known to be able to degrade cells and tissues, the enzymologic analysis of SRF contributes to our understanding of the pathology of primary rhegmatogeneous retinal detachment.

The four bipolar electrods were chronically sutured on the serosa of pylorus of four female goasts (29-36 kg in weight): from oral, electrod No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 4. Electromyograms of abomasum were recorded before and after transection-end-to-end anastomosis of pylorus (between No. 2 and No. 3 electrods). The results are summarized as follows: 1. Before transection - anastomosis, anti-peristaltic discharge was not found in the pylorus. 2. After the anastomosis, prolonged discharge interval of peristalses and anti-peristaltic discharges occured in the upper part of the anastomosis (No. 1 and 2). 3. In the lower part of the anastomosis (No. 3 and 4), prolonged discharge interval of peristalses occured in all four goats, but anti-peristalic discharges were found in three goats. 4. Propagation velocity of anti-peristalic discharges became more faster than that of normo-peristalses.
