Uric acid metabolism in therapy of glycogen storage disease type I.

Factors which may explain lower serum uric in a new therapy of patients with glycogen storage disease (GSD) type I have been studied. [1-14C]Glycine incorporation into urine uric acid was 0.68% of the injected dose during a 6-day period of frequent high carbohydrate feedings, 0.40% with the same diet and nocturnal nasogastric feeding by Vivonex, and 0.18% in a control patient with GSD type III. Fractional renal uric acid excretion in the patient with GSD type I increased from 11.3% to 26.3% after beginning nocturnal nasogastric feeding of Vivonex. Red cell phosphoribosylpyrophosphate leve,ls were not changed by the therapy. Addition of Vivonex nocturnal feedings to frequent high carbohydrate feedings (1) decreased the accelerated de novo purine synthesis to a level still higher than control and (2) increased fractional renal uric acid excretion.

Toward a new theory of dreaming.

A new Process Scoring System for dreams was developed and applied in an intensive single-S case study that spanned 5 1/2 years and 754 dreams. In it two hypotheses derived from a new transformative theory of dreams were tested. Both the transformation hypothesis, which holds that it is possible to shift from a symbolic to a directly expressive mode of dreaming, as well as the parallelism hypothesis, which holds that the expression of affect in dreams parallels the expression of affect in waking, were supported by the results. In contrast to Freud's analytic theory, which deals with content and interprets dreams as coded symbolic messages, our transformative theory focuses on dynamic dream processes and views dreams as pictures of feelings.

A reapplication of the process scoring system for dreams.

The first application of the new Process Scoring System for dreams was made in an intensive longitudinal case study of 1 S over a 5 1/2 year period. In this second application, the dreams of a sample of 5 experienced Feeling Therapy patients were compared to those of 5 control Ss. As in the first study, considerable support was found for both the transformation hypothesis, which holds that it is possible to shift from a symbolic mode of dream behavior to a directly expressive one, and the parallelism hypothesis, which holds that the expression of affect in dreams parallels the expression of affect in waking and vice versa.

Immunological membrane markers of Hodgkin's cells.

Reed-Sternberg and other Hodgkin's giant cells derived from involved spleens and lymph nodes of patients with Hodgkin's disease were examined for surface markers of T and B cells and macrophages. Attachment and phagocytosis of untreated (E) or sensitized (EA and EAC) sheep red blood cells and yeast by Reed-Sternberg cells did not occur. IgG frequently detected at the membrane of Reed-Sternberg cells was partially removed by incubation and washing at 37 degrees C. Fluorescence with a specific anti-T cell serum was not seen on Reed-Sternberg and other Hodgkin's giant cells lack most detectable normal human lymphoid cell markers, but do exhibit membrane bound immunoglobulin possibly of exogenous origin.
