Sebaceous glands changes following topical application of citral.

The long-lasting effect of a flavour cosmetic constituent on male rat skin was studied. Topical daily application of citral (15.4%) solution for 3 months produced an increase in the number of sebaceous gland lobules and hyperplasia of sebaceous cells in each gland. It is suggested that the mechanism of this hyperplasia might be activation of the testosterone 5 alpha-reductase which induces the formation of dihydrotestosterone, the mediator of sebaceous gland activity.

Demonstration of hypnozoites in sporozoite-transmitted Plasmodium vivax infection.

Hypnozoites of two strains of the human relapsing malaria parasite, Plasmodium vivax, have been detected among maturing 7- and 10-day pre-erythrocytic schizonts in liver biopsies of chimpanzees infected by intravenous inoculation of sporozoites obtained from dissected salivary glands of heavily infected anopheline mosquitoes. As in the simian relapsing species, P. cynomolgi, the hypnozoites of P. vivax at 7 and 10 days are uninucleate forms of approximately 4-5 micrometers diameter, lying within the cytoplasm of individual hepatocytes. Their presence in this relapsing human species is added support for the hypnozoite theory of malarial relapse.

[Changes in pattern evoked visual potentials in multiple sclerosis in respect to development of illness].

In 43 patients (28 female, 15 male) with a definitive diagnosis of disseminated sclerosis visual evoked potentials were tested several times with pattern stimulation. The average duration of the disease was 7 years before the first pattern evoked potential. The latency of the evoked potential, estimated from the first positive peak, was in the pathological range in 30 patients in the first investigation, whereas in 38 patients there was a delayed latency in the last measurement. There was an average period of 1.5 years between the first and last investigation. In 20 cases the evoked potentials showed a continuous delay in the latency. Two patients maintained the original pathological values and in 7 cases the control results were below that of the first investigation. In 9 cases it was not possible to show a definite result because of the marked fluctuation in the values. 5 times in the entire investigation was a pathological result absent. There was a clear correlation between both the duration of the disease and the presence of a delayed latency, and the frequency of episodes and a pathological latency.

[Night sleep studies: mobile recording in comparison to conventional laboratory recording].

Night sleep registrations were made in a group of 11 persons in a laboratory using both traditional polygraphic methods and a portable home recording system. A significantly higher value in the evaluation of the sleep efficiency index (quotient of total sleep time and total time in bed) was found with the mobile recording system. Apart from these findings the latency to the beginning of the particular sleep stages (classification of Dement and Kleitman) were diminished. Furthermore there was found a significant decrease of stage 1 in favour of the REM-sleep. Regarding the relation between the REM and the NREM-time, a distinct difference could also be shown. As to the subjective sensitivity, 10 of the 11 tested persons preferred the mobile recording system.

[Incontinentia pigmenti achromians (systematized depigmented nevus)].

Two girls of 1 1/2 und 4 years age and described with linear, arch-like depigementations which appeared in early childhood. In both children no additional abnormalities could be found. The problem of terminology is briefly discussed, and it is proposed to interpret this syndrome as a variant of a systematized naevus depigmentosus. There seems to be no justification for turning this clinical entity into a new syndrome, when the only clinical signs are the characteristic depigmentations without any additional abnormalities.

Studies of Kaposi's sarcoma with infrared photography.

Infrared photography, known to be useful in the study of cutaneous vascular structures but not yet extensively explored in the investigation of skin diseases, was used to study lesions of Kaposi's sarcoma in three patients. In all photographs, the tumors appeared as a stain which was lighter in color than the normal skin. In two patients, the infrared photographs showed a tumor identical with that seen clinically. In the third patient, the tumor showed a larger extension than it seemed to have on physical examination. We believe that this technique can be of value in establishing the presence of such tumors and evaluating their actual size.

Influence of polyunsaturated fats on composition of plasma lipoproteins and apolipoproteins.

The mechanisms of the hypocholesterolemic effect of polyunsaturated fats (PUSF) are not well understood. One possibility is that these fats uniquely reduce the cholesterol content of lipoproteins. The present study was carried out to determine specifically whether the ratio of cholesterol-to-protein (or apoB) in LDL (or other lipoproteins) is reduced by PUSF; also, lipoprotein composition was examined for other possible changes. Eight men and two women with different levels of plasma cholesterol were studied on the metabolic ward for 8 weeks. They were given a diet high in saturated fats (SF) for 4 weeks and another rich in PUSF for 4 weeks. On PUSF diets, mean plasma cholesterol decreased by 25% (SF = 296 +/- 27 (SEM) vs. PUSF = 223 +/- 21 mg/dl) as did total plasma apoB (155 +/- 8 vs. 116 +/- 13 mg/dl). LDL-Cholesterol decreased by 26%, and LDL-apoB fell by 29%. The mean ratio of cholesterol-to-apoB did not change significantly (SF = 1.52 +/- 0.04 vs. PUSF = 1.48 +/- 0.07). Likewise, HDL-cholesterol decreased by 15% (SF = 51 +/- 5 vs. PUSF = 43 +/- 4 mg/dl), and total plasma apoA-I was reduced by 19% (95 +/- 15 vs. 77 +/- 6 mg/dl); also, no change in the cholesterol-to-apoA-I in HDL was noted. Finally, there were no changes in cholesterol/apoB or triglyceride/apoB ratios in VLDL despite a 23% decrease in plasma triglycerides on PUSF. Thus, the hypocholesterolemic effect of PUSF was uniform for all lipoproteins and usually was accompanied by a corresponding decrease in concentrations of apoprotein constituents.

Beau's lines. A case report.

Beau's lines are a depression of the nail surface associated with a severe disturbance which temporarily interferes with the rate of nail growth. They appear several weeks or more after incurrence of the damage and continue to extend during nail growth. These lines were observed soon after birth in all twenty fingernails of an infant girl. The depression extended through the whole thickness of the nails. This would appear to be the first reported case in which Beau's lines have developed so early in life, probably as a result of intrauterine distress.

Blood hyperviscosity in psoriasis.

A study of platelet function and whole-blood viscosity in 11 patients with the confirmed diagnosis of psoriasis revealed a significant elevation in whole-blood viscosity (3.33 +/- 0.37 cP) as compared with that found in a control group (2.80 +/- 0.1 cP). The platelet count and platelet aggregation with ADP, epinephrine and collagen as well as platelet malonyldialdehyde were all within the normal range in all the patients. It is suggested that the increased blood viscosity may contribute to the higher incidence of occlusive vascular disease occurring in patients with psoriasis.
