[Studies into effects of intra-gestational hypotension and maternal Broca's index on birth weight (author's transl)].

Studies were conducted into the effects of intragestational hypotension and Broca's index of mothers on the birth weights of newborns, with reference being to intensive pregnancy care documentation filed for the years 1977 through 1979 at the Gynaecological Hospital of Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, GDR. The low birth weights quoted in literature were not confirmed by the data available to the authors. - Yet, close relationship was found to exist between the mother's relative Broca's index and birth weight. Hence, that factor should be taken into due consideration, whenever studies are undertaken into the problem of newborns with low birth weight.

[Estimation of 131I hippuran clearance during pregnancy (author's transl)].

Changes in 131I hippuran clearance were estimated by a non-catheter method, as well as total clearance and clearance of each kidney, in 43 women at various stages of pregnancy and in 13 non-pregnant women who were not using hormonal contraceptives. The results are demonstrated in graph form. The methods used are described in detail. The procedure for determining clearance in separate kidneys is indicated. It was found that clearance values increased up to the 35th and 36th weeks of pregnancy. The difference between the sides that were found corresponds with the previously known difference in the function of the right and left kidneys and ureters.

Selective mass treatment in a venereal disease control program.

To control syphilis among prostitutes and seasonal farm workers in Fresno County, California, we developed a program of selective mass treatment of prostitutes. From August 1976 to July 1977, 512 women entered the program. Overall, 4.6 per cent of women treated prophylactically for syphilis were actually infected. Compared to cases in the previous year, infectious syphilis cases among prostitutes and seasonal farm workers decreased 51.3 per cent and 26.8 per cent, respectively.

[Determination of renal function during pregnancy via renal sequence scintigraphy (author's transl)].

Following a detailed description of the technique of examination and evaluation used in nuclear medicine, the article reports on first results obtained with renal sequence scintigraphy in pregnant women with normal kidneys. Attention is drawn to the diagnostic possibilities offered by this method, basing on a discussion with reference to the published literature, with particular emphasis on pregnancy and on the monitoring of risk pregnancies.

[Interactions between macromolecular adjuvants and drugs. Part 16: Effects of human serum albumin and Mg2+ on oxytetracycline-polyvinylpyrrolidone interactions (author's transl)].

Equilibrium dialyses and fluorescent spectroscopic measurements demonstrated that human serum albumin (HSA) affects the oxytetracycline (OTC)--polyvinyl-pyrrolidone K 90 (PVP) interactions. The preferential binding of OTC with HSA, as compared to PVP, was evidenced by means of a three-compartment model. The binding values increased with the increase of the portion of PVP in the PVP-HSA mixture. Superadditive OTC bindings occurred at a ratio of 1:1 (by weight). The addition of Mg2+ to PVP-containing solutions, at a molar ratio of 1:1, also produced an increase of the interactions of this antibiotic with PVP, whereby maximal OTC-PVP bindings of 50--60% were reached.

[Interactions between macromolecular adjuvants and drugs. Part 17: On the effect of macromolecular adjuvants on the dissolution rate of chlorpromazine from dosage forms (author's transl)].

The determination of the dissolution rate of chlorpromazine from tablets and triturations containing macromolecular adjuvants by means of a modification of the flow-through type cell according to Langenbucher evidenced a decrease in the dissolution rate produced by polyvinylpyrrolidone, methyl-cellulose and hydroxyethyl-cellulose. It was found that the decrease in the dissolution rate is not due to the confirmed, relatively marked tendency of chlorpromazine to form complexes, but to gel formation.

[Influence of na-salicylate on uterine motility in labour (author's transl)].

A dosage of 10 mg/kg body weight Na-salicylate has no depressive effect on uterine motility. The examination carried out intra partum in the condition of normal uterine activity support our opinion that relatively high doses of 3--5 g per day or the simultaneous administration of beta-adrenergical substances are necessary to obtain an effective tocolysis.

[Studies on renal function in H-gestosis using renal sequence scintigraphy and 131-J-hippurate clearance (author's transl)].

The article comments on the results of a study conducted in 23 women with H-gestosis, in 43 gravidae of the corresponding period of gestation with healthy kidneys, as well as in a control group of 13 women with healthy kidneys, in order to determine, by means of renal sequence scintigraphy and 131-J-hippurate clearance, the change in renal function caused by H-gestosis. The clearance data are shown both globally and broken down according to the individual kidneys. Typical activity-time curves of the relevant groups under examination are also demonstrated. The results show that with mild to moderate H-gestosis, the clearance equivalents are just below the values found in pregnancy without complications, the difference not being statistically significant. In the 28th-34th week of pregnancy, the elimination phase above the right renal parenchyma "regions of interest" is enhanced in a partly statistically significant manner, compared with the corresponding control group.

[Interactions between macromolecular adjuvants and drugs. Part 18: The binding behaviour of sodium carboxymethylcellulose and other macromolecules towards streptomycin sulphate (author's transl)].

Unlike the other macromolecules under investigation (polyvinylpyrrolidone, methylcellulose, polyvinyl alcohol), sodium carboxymethylcellulose acts on streptomycin sulphate, which leads to isolable precipitates. By equilibrium dialysis in electrolyte-free and electrolyte-containing solutions, the interaction was characterized in more detail and described by Donnan curves. The associates (which contained, on an average, 40% of streptomycin) proved to be resistant to light and air, and stable to thin-layer chromatography. Microbiological assays on the test strain Bacillus subtilis SG119 revealed a decrease in activity of the streptomycin-sodium carboxymethylcellulose associates compared to pure streptomycin (tested in the solid form, using rice granulate as a carrier substance). In contrast, the associate was as efficient as the antibiotic when dissolved in a concentrated solution of sodium chloride.

[Comparative appraisal of diagnostic methods for early detection of stress and urge incontinence of women (author's transl)].

Studies were conducted into 40 women who were afflicted with first-degree and second-degree urinary incontenence. The results are broken down by diagnostic methods used. The same methods were applied for control to 14 women without any incontinence complaints. - The contributions actually made by each of the methods to the definite presurgical diagnosis in its totality are described by graphic presentation of the results. - The findings reported in this paper suggest that complex consideration has to be given to all results to introduce adequate therapy in given any case. While the methods reported proved to differ by informative value, none of them should be abandoned in routine examination.

[Experimental studies on the effect of long-term oestrogens on contrast excretion during intravenous urography (author's transl)].

The possible connection between long continued oestrogen intake and dilatation of the upper urinary tract was examined urographically in nine female rabbits. The degree of dilatation was judged on eleven parameters. The results of the study indicate that oestrogens without simultaneous mechanical influence on the urinary tract does not lead to dilatation of the pelvis or ureter. The results are illustrated graphically and are compared with the findings in the literature.
