The morphogenesis of the vasculature in swine fetal skin.

The morphogenesis of the vascular elements in the skin of 45 swine fetuses (German landrace), from 50 to 330 mm crown-to-rump (C-R) length, was described. A simple pattern for the cutaneous vascular networks could be recognized in fetuses ranging from 90 to 100 mm C-R length. In 150 to 170 mm length-fetuses, the cutaneous blood vessel networks were differentiated into a definite pattern of construction. The venous blood drained regionally through the Plexus venosus subpapillaris profundus into the Plexus venosus dermis profundus. Each region ("Unit Vascular Zone") was supplied by more than one R. arteriosus cutaneus . The large branches of R. arteriosus cutaneus were accompanied by 2 satellite veins. At the end of gestation, the vessels of the Plexus venosus dermis profundus exhibited a beaded appearance which indicated the presence of valves.

Histochemistry of complex carbohydrates in the skin of the pig snout, with special reference to eccrine glands.

The histochemistry of carbohydrates has been studied in the skin of the pig snout with selected methods of light microscopy including peroxidase-labelled lectin-diaminobenzidine (PO-LT-DAB) procedures. In the snout skin the dark secretory cells and the luminal secretion of the eccrine glands contained considerable amounts of neutral glycoproteins, but only a very small amount of acidic ones. It was possible to demonstrate glycogen in the secretory cells of these glands. The other skin structures of the snout also showed positive reactions for complex carbohydrates. Most remarkable were stronger reactions of intercellular substances among the spinosum cells, particularly following the PO-LT-DAB procedures, which demonstrated such saccharide residues as beta-D-galactose and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine.

Cardiovascular effects of terbutalin in pregnant women.

Terbutalin, a beta-mimetic drug, appears to have a favorable beta 2:beta 1 ratio. It is suitable for uterine relaxation. Ten normotensive pregnant women with imminent premature labor were studied during intravenous infusion of terbutalin with the non-invasive method of quantitative sphygmometry. Cardiac output increased and total peripheral resistance decreased. As there was only slight variation in the arterial blood pressure, terbutalin is indicated especially in cases with hypotension.

A histomorphological study on the endocrine portion of the pancreas in swan and fowl.

The distribution and the histomorphological features of the endocrine portion of the pancreas of both swan and fowl were studied. The Insulae pancreaticae in both birds could be differentiated into three variaties, viz.: The Alpha-, the Beta-, and the mixed-islets. The Alpha-islets were consisted of Alpha-cells and few Delta-cells. The Beta-islets were composed to various amounts of Beta- and Delta-cells. The mixed-islands contained either Alpha-cells and few Beta-cells or Alpha-cells and few Beta- and Delta-cells.

[Chronic hypertension and pregnancy].

Survey about the combination of chronic hypertension and pregnancy. In contrary to the definition usually used in pregnancy blood pressure more than 140/90 mm Hg (18,7/12,0 kPa) is defined as hypertension. The incidence rate of chronic hypertension in fertile women in 3 percent. Superimposed toxemia is the most common complication. Significant correlation exists between diastolic blood pressure and perinatal mortality and intrauterine growth retardation. Hemodynamic changes are characterized by elevated total peripheral resistance and decreased plasma volume. Initially cardiac output is elevated, but more and more decreased, if the hypertension has been manifesting for some time. In pregnancy there should be an etiologic differentiation. An intensive team work between physicians and obstetricians is necessary for therapy. Principles of treatment generally accepted are phases of physical inactivity and avoidance of an excessive increase of body weight. No salt restriction. The opinions about the necessity of normalization of blood pressure during pregnancy by drugs are controversial. The recommendations of administration of antihypertensive drugs seem to succeed, because in controlled studies there was a decreased perinatal mortality.

The morphogenesis of the vasculature in bovine fetal skin.

The morphogenesis of the blood vessels in the bovine fetal skin, from the third to the tenth month of pregnancy was studied. Bovine fetal skin was found to be divided into 'unit vascular zones'. Each unit was centrally supplied with a ramus arteriosus cutaneous. The venous blood was drained from each unit through the tributaries of the plexus venosus dermis profundus. The formation of the venous plexus started at the fourth month and the primary elements of the arterial rete developed at the sixth month of intra-uterine life.

The peripheral kinetics of norepinephrine in depressive illness.

Sympathetic nervous system function was studied in patients with primary depressive illness. Tritiated norepinephrine was used to measure the rate of entry to plasma of norepinephrine released from sympathetic nerves ("norepinephrine spillover rate"), and to assess the neuronal uptake of norepinephrine by studying the removal of norepinephrine from plasma. Norepinephrine spillover was elevated in five of 11 patients. This abnormality, which was unrelated to the presence of individual vegetative symptoms, occurred exclusively in patients with endogenous depression. The rapid-removal phase of the disappearance of tritiated norepinephrine from plasma, which seemed to correspond with neuronal uptake of norepinephrine, was accelerated in patients with depressive illness, providing presumptive evidence of increased neuronal uptake. If norepinephrine uptake is also accentuated within the brain, a functional deficiency of the transmitter at adrenergic receptor sites might result.

Hemodynamic, adjusted treatment of hypertension in pregnancy. - Part I: Infusionary osmo-oncotherapy.

In hypertension pregnancy a hypoperfusion syndrome of the peripheral tissues, caused by disturbances of the microcirculation, first of all endangers the fetus in utero. The aim of treatment is to correct the hypertension in such a way that perfusion of the uteroplacental unit, as one important part of the total peripheral resistance, increases. We investigated the cardiovascular effects of intravenous infusions of 10% mannitol, 40% sorbitol, 10% low molecular dextran, 10% low molecular dextran with an admixture of 10% mannitol, as well as of the successive application of 40% sorbitol and 10% low molecular dextran in hypertensive late pregnant patients. The specific effects of osmotherapy, oncotherapy, and osmo-oncotherapy are described in detail. In severe cases requiring acute treatment, the osmo-oncotherapy is the most advantageous because it combines raising cardiac output, decreasing total peripheral resistance, and edema-mobilizing and diuresis-inducing effects.
