Echographic diagnosis of neonatal renal venous thrombosis.

The echographic appearances found in 23 newborn with clinically labelled renal venous thrombosis are described. There is a spectrum of abnormality which can be graded into mild, moderate and severe. These grades have some relation to prognosis and seem to be age related.

Diurnal and sequential grip functions in normal subjects and effects of temperature change and exercise of the forearm on grip function in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and in normal controls.

Rate of grip development (power), time to reach maximum grip strength and fatigue were not affected by the diurnal variation known to influence maximum grip strength and work during grip formation in normal subjects. Rheumatoid hands were less affected by exercise or temperature change of the forearm than were normal hands. Cold more consistently produced change in hand function than did warmth or exercise. Environmental changes affected the dynamic (rates of grip development and release and power) more than the static parameters (maximum grip strength and work) of grip. Measurement of power, fatigue and rate of grip release provide additional parameters useful in the assessment of hand function in patients with arthritis.

Rejection encephalopathy.

Thirteen patients are described who had 15 encephalopathic episodes complicating severe rejection crises following renal transplantation. Comparison was made with control rejection episodes in the same patients in which encephalopathy did not occur. The severity of the rejection episodes as measured by the rise in serum creatinine was significantly greater (p less than 0.05) in those episodes with encephalopathy than in control episodes. There was no difference from controls when comparison was made of mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) or rate of rise of MABP at the time of the encephalopathy. There was no significant difference in serum potassium, sodium and calcium, weight gain/fluid retention and immunosuppressive therapy in the two groups. Effective treatment of rejection and control of fits, hypertension and fluid retention produced rapid recovery without late sequelae.

Different Tridacnins in different Tridacnid clams: a comparative study.

1. Haemolymph samples from different Tridacnid clams were tested for haemagglutinin activity, using normal and enzyme-treated red cells from different sources. 2. Precipitin reactions with these haemolymph fluids were performed in agar gel, using several defined glycosubstances of different origin. 3. In several experiments it could be demonstrated that in all Tridacnid haemolymph samples anti-galactosyl ("anti-galactan") specific lectins do occur, however, they definitely differ from each other.

The evaluation of the periotron.

These preliminary investigations seem to indicate that the periotron may be useful in assessment of the presence of gingival inflammation in the clinical periodontal pockets. Successive recordings of the same volume varied from 5 to 11%. Data from the periotron showed a high correlation with increased known volumes of fluid and with assessment of gingival inflammation using the GI. Assessment with the periotron varied with the dissipation constant of fluids. Since the dissipation constant of gingival fluid varied among individuals, this constant must be evaluated when the instrument is used in clinical and research efforts.

Cryosurgery in the treatment of giant cell tumors of bone. A report of 52 consecutive cases.

Cryosurgery combined with routine "second look" biopsy has been previously reported in our initial series of 25 cases and has been demonstrated to be a promising modality in the treatment of giant cell tumors of bone. Further refinement of this surgical technique by more careful preliminary curettage has now significantly improved the rate of local tumor control and has markedly reduced the incidence of associated complications. While the problems of infection, fracture, delayed bone healing and local tumor recurrence have not been completely eliminated, our experience with 27 additional cases shows that it has been possible to develop a highly reliable procedure for the eradication of tumor while usually preserving joint motion and avoiding arthrodesis or amputation. The 1.9% malignancy rate is much lower than the previously reported papers by Hutter and Jaffe.
