Serial echocardiograms were performed on 17 infants with persistence of fetal circulation syndrome to measure right ventricular systolic time intervals from pulmonic valve echograms and left ventricular systolic time intervals from aortic valve echograms. Right ventricular pre-ejection period/right ventricular ejection time ratio was prolonged in PFCS when compared to that in normal newborn infants, and diminished with clinical improvement. Left ventricular pre-ejection period/left ventricular ejection time ratio was prolonged in infants with PFCS. Echographic RPEP/RVET was consistent with the elevated pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance of PFCS; elevated LPEP/LVET suggested left ventricular dysfunction.

This report shows results of a survey on dental caries in the canton of Vaud in the years 1970 and 1974. In this canton fluoridation was carried out by means of fluoride tablets distributed at school until 1969/70 and in subsequent years by adding 250 mg F/kg fluoride to domestic salt. For comparison, results from adjoining and other cantons are also presented. In 1970 the 3 communities in the canton of Vaud (Moudon, Grandson and Vevey) showed a remarkably low overall caries level due to the distribution of fluoride tablets, supplemented in Grandson with regular brushings with fluoride solutions. When the fluoride tablets were discontinued in 1968/70 and fluoridated domestic salt containing 250 mg F/kg NaCl was introduced, caries incidence reached an even lower level. In these 3 communities caries prevalence fell to the lowest level reached, so far, by means preventive measures in Bettlach (canton of Solothurn, toothbrushing with fluoride solutions 6 times per year combined with information, fluoride tablets on every school day, and in addition consumption of table salt fluoridated at a suboptimal level of 90 ppm). The children in the control communities Romont (canton of Fribourg), St-Aubin (canton of Neuchâtel) and Châtel-St-Denis (canton of Fribourg) also showed decreases of caries levels from 1970 to 1974. This decrease is attributed to the distribution of fluoride tablets started at the schools of this community in the late sixties. Caries incidence in the age spans 8 to 12 and 10 to 14 years was estimated. Children from the canton of Vaud where fluoridated table salt was practically the only preventive measure showed a smaller DMF increase than those from the cantons of Fribourg and Neuchâtel. By means of a method combining DMF means of various age groups it was possible to obtain sufficiently large numbers of children for a study of the caries prevalence in each community. All communities showed a decrease of caries levels. In the canton of Vaud this reduction started in 1970 at an already low level and in 1974 reached consistently lower values than those of the control communities of the cantons of Fribourg and Neuchâtel.
Various possibilities of breast plasty after tumor surgery or for the correction of combined anomalies of the thorax and the breasts are discussed. In the augmentive procedures either local flaps or mammary prostheses as well as silicone rubber were used. The authors show a personal method where the remaining healthy breast is used for reconstruction.

Germinating cysts and isolated walls from germinating cysts incorporated 14C-UDPG into wall material of which 22.5 and 15% respectively were insoluble in boiling 1 N HCl, indicating that part of the synthetase activity is located in the wall itself. A combination of Urografin and Ficoll density gradients was used to separate various intracellular fractions. A consistent separation of beta-glucanase and UDPG-transferase enriched fractions was achieved. The beta-glucanase fraction contained dictyosome vesicles and fragments along with some plasma membranes. The UDPG-transferase fraction was relatively rich in membranes resembling rough and smooth ER. The results suggest the two enzymes are transported to the wall by different intracellular routes, and two types of vesicle may be involved. Alkaline phosphatase, beta-glucosidase and acid phosphatase were found extracellularly and their distribution in density gradients determined. The results of histochemical staining for acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase and polysaccharide are described and compared with the biochemical data. beta-1,3-glucanase, found intra- and extracellularly, induced distorted growth of germ tubes and also removed most of the apical wall when added to the incubation medium. None of these responses were observed with cellulase. Determinations of the osmotic pressure of germinating cysts and incubation medium revealed that the turgor of germinating cysts amounts to about 1.8 at under the conditions used.
The distrubution of CA neurons of areas A6 and A4 was delineated in Cebus apella monkey using the fluorescent histochemical technique of Falck and Hillarp. Cytospectroscopy was utilized for CA differentiation. The noradrenergic cellular regions A6, A4, and subcoeruleus have extensively increased in size in the Cebus as compared to the rat and appear to be separate nuclear regions. Area A4 is made up of two cellular subgroups: a more abundant lateral magnocellular area with cells as large as 45 mum and a smaller medial parvocellular group where the neurons are spindle-shaped and lie within 10-100 mum of the ependyma. The neuronal processes of A4 tend to be directed towards the flocculus and paraflocculus of the cerebellum. Some processes seem to enter the ependyma and others end subependymally. The functional significance of the pontine CA neurons is discussed.

Several non-lethal deletions of the broad host range plasmid RK2 (molecular weight of 37.6 . 10(6) have been produced in vitro. The method employed relied on the single HindIII restriction nuclease site in RK2 and the ability of phage Mu to insert and thereby add new HindIII restriction sites at various positions in the plasmid. The deleted plasmids have in each case lost kanamycin (Km) resistance, and in two cases are defective in self-transmissibility. The method used to reduce the size of the RK2 plasmid also results in the cloning of each of the two ends of the Mu phage DNA on the plasmid derivatives.

It has been shown that two different kinds of modification are able to improve Meyer's operation after subtotal or total ablation of the lower lip. Either a flap taken from the top of the tongue or the Estlander-Abbé's triangular flap can be used in the intention of widening the new lip and consequently avoiding an excess of tension of it.
The echographic isovolumic contraction time (ICT) of the left ventricle (LV) was measured in order to assess alterations of LV performance in children with various forms of cardiac disease. The echographic ICT was defined as the interval between coaptation of the anterior and posterior mitral valve leaflets and aortic cusp opening. Four groups of patients were evaluated: normal (48); LV myocardial disease (20); patent ductus arterosus (PDA) (19); and aortic stenosis (AS) (15). In normal children ICT shortened with decreasing age and increasing heart rate. Isovolumic contraction time was more influenced by heart rate (HR) than age, but the relationship was still weak (r = 0.61). In patients with LV myocardial disease ICT was markedly prolonged, while in children with patent ductus arteriosus and aortic stenosis it was shortened as compared with normal children (P less than 0.01).
