Indication, advantages and disadvantages of 5 methods for the treatment of hemangiomas of the face are discussed.
A new measuring system is described which is able to measure the dose applicated by a betatron by means of two redundant dose monitors and to control the dose distribution by a special chamber arrangement. The measuring system is completed by control equipments and a digital dose rate and energy measuring unity.

Forty male albino rats were used to study the relationship between experimentally (concentrated hydrochloric acid) produced local structural changes of the coronary artery wall and central nervous information processing and chronobiological events, respectively. The alterations of the coronary arteries caused by this treatment did not produce infarction but initiated on the whole length of the arterial branch proliferative processes that are complete within 12 weeks following the intervention. Central nervous information processing and chronoregulatory processes showed, immediately after exposure to hydrochloric acid, pronounced malfunctions followed by a stage of hyperreactivity (4 weeks following the damage). At 8 weeks from the intervention, the parameters of information processing and chronobiological events of the CNS again equalled the control values. Since the central nervous functions were back to normal earlier than the structural alterations, the results are interpreted as reflecting CNS-controlled interactions between the complex of visceral afference and efference, the regulation of which is determined by the CNS after coronary damage in such a way as to restore the adaptational capacity of the organism by a predominance of sanogenetic processes.

The pladmid RK2 is stably maintained in a broad range of gram-negative bacteria. The RK2 DNA has a single Eco RI restriction site. The insertion of a DNA fragment into this site does not interfere with either plasmid maintenance or self-transmissibility. Because RK2 has a broad host range, it should be useful for the construction in vitro of hybrid plasmid molecules capable of being established by conjugal transfer or transformation into many genera of gram-negative organisms.

Yersinia pestis has been characterized in terms of fingerprints of digests (pancreatic and/or T1 ribonuclease) of its 16S and 5S ribosomal RNAs. These show clearly that Y. pestis is a member of the Enterobacteriaceae and suggest that within the Family it is most closely related to Serratia and/or Proteus.

One of the noninvasive methods of evaluating left ventricular performance is the measurement of left ventricular systolic time intervals (LVSTI). However, noninvasive measurement of right ventricular systole by this technique has been unreliable because of the inability to accurately time the onset of right ventricular ejection. Excellent correlation of LVSTI measured from the carotid pulse and those determined from the echocardiogram was demonstrated in 15 patients. STI of the right ventricle (RVSTI) were measured in a similar fashion from the pulmonary valve echo in 11 normal children. Right ventricular ejection time (RVET) was longer than left ventricular injection time (LVET). Right ventricular pre-ejection period and RPEP was shorter than left ventricular pre-ejection period (LPEP). In 15 children with transposition of the great arteries (TGA) the situation was reversed. RVET was shortened and RPEP was prolonged as the right ventricle contracted against systemic resistance; whereas, the LVET lengthened and LPEP shortened with ejection into a low pressure pulmonary circuit. Our studies in a total of 41 patients indicate the accurate, noninvasive measurement of right, as well as left, ventricular STI can be obtained with the use of echocardiography.
Serial assessment of the status of the pulmonary vascular bed requires bed requires cardiac catheterization. We have demonstrated the right ventricular systolic time intervals (RVSTI) may be measured from the pulmonary valve echo. The right ventricular ejection time (RVET) and right pre-ejection period (RPEP) were measured in 45 normal patients. The RVET and RPEP decreased with increasing heart rate but increased with age. The RPEP/RVET, however, was uninfluenced by either age or heart rate. The RPEP/RVET was, therefore, determined from the pulmonary valve echo in 64 patients with congenital heart disease who underwent cardiac catheterization. Increased pulmonary artery diastolic pressure (PADP), pulmonary vascular resistance (PADP), pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) and mean pulmonary artery pressure (MPAP) resulted inan increased RPEP/RVET. The use of the RPEP/RVET permitted the serial echographic evaluation of the pulmonary vascular bed in selected patients; marked elevation of the ratio indicated the presence of pulmonary hypertension.
