[The effect of Mecadox on the immune response and on various chicken lymphatic organs].

Through 35 days Mecadox was admixed to feed rations for chicken, 40 days of age, and inhibited immunogenesis which, generally, is reflected in lowering of antibody titre and gamma globulin level as well as in quantitative variation of the differential leucocyte count. Change of immune reactivity in chicken treated with Mecadox and deviation from the normal are attributable to changes in the organs which are responsible for immunological processes (thymus and bursa), such as reduction of ascorbic acid levels in the adrenal gland.

[Changes in various physiological parameters in chickens after entomoxan administration].

Eight weeks of Entomoxan administration to chickens (15 mg/kg live weight) were followed by significant change of certain physiological parameters relating to the blood, liver, suprarenal bodies, and sexual glands. Such variation was taken to indicate the presence of stress suffered by the animals' impairment of carbohydrate and fat metabolism, and defects of hormonal regulation.

Modification of some hematologic and biochemical indices in mice consecutive mecadox administration.

Mecadox addition to the diet of laboratory mice in doses of 25 mg/kg/day for 30 days resulted in some hematologic and biochemical modifications: 1. Red cell count declined moderately, leucocyte and neutrophile count was higher and reached their normal values 15 days following treatment. 2. Modifications of liver transaminases expressed by a diminution of GOT and GPT activities were observed together with a reduction of free nitrogen. Values returned to normal within 15 days after treatment. 3. Mecadox stimulated weight gain in treated animals during the first 15 days of treatment. No significant differences were observed in weight gain between the two groups during the period which followed treatment.

[Effects of Entomoxan on various lymphatic organs of the chicken].

The effect of an organochlorine compound (Entomoxan) on the bursa of Fabricius and the thymus was followed in chicks given a ration containing 15 ppm daily for 8 weeks, starting at 3 weeks of age. Birds were killed 2,4,6 or 8 weeks after the start of treatment. Total protein, RNA, DNA, nitrogen, free amino acids and water content were determined in both lymphatic organs. Two weeks of treatment with Entomoxan produced a stress-like effect, with loss of weight of both organs and important biochemical changes. Such changes were still present after 4 weeks, although there was no longer any difference in organ weight in comparison with the controls. After six weeks of treatment the changes in the bursa were slight and there were no changes in the thymus. Some changes were still present at the 8th week, but ther was no indication of a stress effect.

[Thymus changes in chicks following treatment with small doses of insecticides].

Effects of small doses of insecticides (Fenclorfos and Heptaclor) upon the thymus of chickens were followed. Treatment began at the age of 3 weeks and continued during 4 or 8 weeks. Doses used were: 1 ppm for Heptaclor and 1 ppm and 0.5 ppm for Fenclorfos. Total nucleic acid, total protein, RNA, DNA, and amino acid nitrogen contents were determined, as well as GOT and GPT activities and weight of the organ. Results are interpreted as being due to the action of insecticides on the hypothalamus-hypophysis-adrenals axis. They depend on the nature and dosis of insecticide, as well as on the duration of the treatment.

Thymo-adrenals reaction in pre-pubertal and pubertal Wistar rats in response to acute administration of calcitonin.

Pre- and post-pubertal Wistar rats were injected i.m. with a single dose equivalent to 1 UI of Calcitonin (Calsyn-50 Rorer, Swiss). Its effects upon the thymus and adrenals were assessed after 1, 3 and respectively, 8 days since injection. The results pointed to differences of reaction of the thymus and adrenals dependent on rat ages and on the period of hormone persistence in the organism. The effects in mature rats are characterized by a stress state, reflected in adrenal reaction, but without impact upon the thymus in point of biochemical parameters. In rats of that age, modifications in both organs are much reduced after 8 days since calcitonin injection. In pubertal rats, adrenal activity is temperate, and thymus registers modification of DNA, of oxygen consumption and of nitrogen aminic after 3 days since injection. This modification is maintained for 8 days.

Thyroxin and thiouracyl influence upon some biochemical parameters in chicken thymuses.

Administration of L-thyroxin in a dose of 30 micrograms/chicken, i.m. and 2-thiouracyl in a dose of 0.3 mg/chicken, i.m. for an interval of 3 days, determined, at the thymus level, increases of total protein content in the Tu group, in parallel with decreases of the nitrogen of free amino acids level in the Tx group, increases of DNA content in the Tx group and an increase of the thymus weight in both groups. Modifications are due to the action of thyroxin, on the one hand, and on the other to the doses of antithyroid drug which determines a raise of T4 content in the plasma and the manifestation of activities specific to this hormone.

Biochemical modifications in the bursa of fabricius, thymus and adrenals of chickens injected with an anti-bursal serum.

Cornish-Rock chickens were given 0.3 ml anti-bursal serum in the pectoral muscle on the first day of life. Three days after serum administration, the modifications were evident both in the bursa of Fabricius and thymus (ponderal involution and decrease of RNA and glycogen contents). Pronounced thymo-bursal differences appeared at 13 days: in the bursa the values were normalized; in the thymus inverse modifications appeared as compared to the 3 days values. The modifications in the adrenals are in agreement with those in the lymph organs.

The hypoglycemic effect of "Hipogalegin".

In alloxan-induced diabetes in rats a marked increase in fasting glycemia was seen. The administration of "Hipogalegin" (0.45 g/kg b.w.; for one administration) led to a marked decrease of the glycemia in fasted diabetic animals: 40% of the diabetic animals subjected to this treatment survived and continued to survive even on the 94th day after diabetes was induced. Diabetic animals who were not given "Hypogalegin" died during the first two weeks after diabetes was induced.

Hepatoprotector effect of Chrysanthemum balsamita extract in ethanol intoxicated rats.

Male Wistar rats weighing 200 +/- 10 g were intoxicated with ethanol 50% (1 ml/100 g b.w./, day, for 12 days) and concomitantly treated with hydroethanol extract of Chrysanthemum balsamita. An increase of liver glucose-6-phosphatase and phosphorylase a activities correlated with a liver glycogen breakdown as well as a decrease of glycemia were obtained in rats given ethanol 50%. It was found that Chrysanthemum balsamita extract counteracted ethanol effects and maintained at normal limit the metabolite parameters.
